What role will you take on?
With all of the options, which role will you take on?
Commissioner General Manager Manager Combination of sorts I'm still trying to decide. I want to try and speed things up a bit as before I was always managing all of my games and it's tough to get longevity out of something like that with a full-time job and all. I'm leaning towards being a MLB GM or a minor league manager and working my way up. It would also be cool to be a manager in say, Japan, and eventually get a job in the US or something along those lines. Thoughts? I can't wait for this game to come out! It sounds great, and I am glad the developers are doing the right thing by not rushing a release. |

I almost always play as Commissioner. I like the idea of letting the game play out history, and me reporting on it.
That said, however, it's not like I never play at the other levels. The leagues I play as Commissioner are always played that way - but some leagues I will "jump down" to GM or manager when the situation is right... or for the hell of it

yeah, I think starting somewhere low (like the minors) could be really cool. For the most part, though, I plan to be a GM. I want to be in charge of all transactions, but I like to see another "person" handle the day-to-day baseball.

With the new additions, I imagine I'll be playing some kind of meta-commissioner, overseeing not only MLB but the other leagues as I kick them off. I've gotten strangely into the dead ball era because of this; I'm always trying to create a history for a league where I can start Eugene Churching things, then I dislike the history I've created so I go back and steadily make things more and more complex. I always end up at a point where I say "aw darn, I should have included X" and start over. It sounds tedious, but it is somehow fun as well, and after doing this over and over again with leagues starting in 1901, I've begun to have a fondness for the dead ball.

"Eugene Church" is a verb?

I'll probably have two main solo leagues. One where I play in 'God mode', and another where I manage only and try and work my way up through the ranks.

This should have been a poll!
![]() I've always preferred playing God mode and I doubt that will change, but I'm sure I'll find myself trying out the other modes as well. If we can go in and out of modes easily without locking ourselves into one I think that would be great. Can anybody say whether you're locked in to a mode in OOTP2006 like you were with manager mode in OOTP6?

Honestly it'll depend on what I'm doing. Since most of my solo play revolves around the dynasty I write I'll probably keep in "God mode" as kq put it.

Goin' Commissionerin'
Being a relentless consumer of stats, I've grown to love the Commissioner mode for quite a few reasons.
Also, it's nice to get a sample of all the different mind-sets people can have when running OOTP. So, as far as me, I like to start out running my team, the Cubs, with the closest-to-current MLB rosters. I'll guide them for, say, 15-25 years, or until I've won a bunch of championships. Then, as all of the players I now follow in fantasy baseball grow old and retire, their names begin to litter the list of career leaders. This probably is the best part. Say you pick one of the worst, small-market, in-debt teams, with a useless farm system, a huge payroll and a ton of old guys. You trade what you can for prospects, and then enjoy two to four years of top-five draft picks. At the same time, let all the bad contracts expire without signing any big free agents. It's rock bottom. It's also a challenge that can take anywhere from roughly 10 to 20 years to produce a championship. But it's loads of fun -- especially acquiring and following prospects. In my latest instance, I did this rebuilding thing with three more crappy teams, and cracked the 100-year barrier. It's an OOTP5 league (I know, I know -- by the time I discovered OOTP6, OOTPBM was already being promoted). Ultimately, it's quite entertaining after 100 seasons to browse the career leaders and hall of fame. And, as you all know, it takes a damn long time to go through 100 seasons running at least one team. I've had this particular file going for close to two years, I think. Lastly, as I ramble on unabashedly, I'm downloading the free version of OOTP5. The story is, I got it the first time a few years ago. Then my old computer finally broke down, so I got a new computer (couldn't transfer OOTP5 because of the license) and downloaded the free version with the free-agent bug. ![]() But now, with MAJOR THANKS to Markus, Marc, and whoever else had the gumption to re-patch a three-year-old game, I'm downloading it again. ![]() I'm also proud to admit I've come to terms and am comfortable with still-unidentified (not going to say it). Spring is long, especially in northern Illinois, and it just started. This just means I'll have to start a new league on my freshly de-bugged OOTP5.

I am going to play the role of Bud Selig in my league and:
1) Have all my all star games end in ties 2) Willfully turn a blind eye as I adjust league settings so league homeruns increase year after year while I insist there is nothing wrong 3) If I don't like how things are going, I will "lock out" the players and introduce "replacement players" through the "create fictional players" function 4) I will expand the playoffs in such a manner that renders the regular season meaningless. 5) cause fan interest to slowly decline through my fictional baseball universe resulting in constant threats of contraction. Number one happened once. Number two wasn't done by Selig, and IIRC it has receded in the past few years. Number three, replacement players weren't selected by Selig, and it was a strike. Number 4, the sregular season is not meaningless - it means less than it used to, but it's still meaningful. Number 5 is wrong because there is no constant threat of contraction, and I'm not sure fan interest is declining - is it?

I was being facetious when I wrote that, however, there are things about Selig I don't really like.
In my own opinion, 1994-around 2001 or so, I felt that the pitcher-batter balance was too much in the favour of the hitters and frankly, I really don't like that era of baseball but that's just me. Since Selig presided over much of it, I think that tends to reflect poorly on him although its not all his fault. But you are right, I think it has improved over the past few years. As for playoffs, I was mimicking what many baseball purists hate about the wildcard. For me, I don;t mind it but would prefer to see the wildcard get punished more in the playoffs but playing less home games in the Division Series (maybe just one home game, or even none) As for popularity, I don't have the figures in front of me, but attendances did dip for a long time post-strike. I think overall attendance is okay now but there are lots of problem spots. We had the threat of contraction a few years ago with the Twins and Expos, and this year we might see the issue crop up again as the CBA allows MLB to contract without any union approval. That being said, I don't know if this avenue would seriously be pursued. One other point, for every good thing MLB does such as MLB TV, they shoot themselves in the foot (such as this potential nonsense over stats being intellectual property of MLB). IIRC, it began as a strike in 1994 and became a lockout in 1995 but my memory could be failing me. Either way, I was exaggerating about Selig, but there are numerous things I don't like about him. |
