I've never liked the Devil Rays as a name anyways..I hope they go in a completely different direction and obviously don't go with the one discussed a few posts up.

While I don't understand why they go with Tampa Bay instead of simply Tampa, it makes the team name better. I mean, many people would problably read Tampa Rays as Tampa Bays.

I've never liked it either. Not too strong in the imagery department:

Doesn't do much for me. And "Devil Rays" is cumbersome.

Because of the fear that it would piss off the quarter-million or so people who live across the bay in St. Petersburg - which happens to be where Tropicana Field and the St. Pete Times Forum are.

It's the same reason that all the pro sports teams in Minneapolis/St. Paul are called "Minnesota", ultimately.

It is as stupid as calling a team Golden State. There is no Tampa Bay as a city it is just a region.

If they want to increase fan support, they should try finishing somewhere other than last.

Hell, there is a New York, but neither "New York" team even plays there.

The Panthers and Marlins are called Florida while the Heat and Dolphins are called Miami!
Tampa Bay is the name of a city in Florida it's it where B.Gardens is located!
Their use to be a team called the Orlando Rays!
The reason why they are called the New England Patroits is because New England is a state and Boston is located in a different state! How about the Foxboro Patroits?
How about the St. Petersburg Rays?
Tropicals?
Beachers?
Oceaners?

Kudos! These exclamatory outbursts are always worth a little chortle!

Wow, people are discussing this? When I heard it on the radio, I thought, "meh, it's Tampa. Now I won't think of them by a different name."

This is kind of like the Arizona Cardinals changing their logo last year to make it look fiercer.

Yeah. That'll work.

Tampa Bay is the REGION!!! They name of the BAY is Tampa Bay and the region around it is called Tampa Bay.

Some have thought of calling the Oakland A's the East Bay A's should they move to somewhere else in the East Bay (Fremont, Pleasanton, Livermore, Dublin, Hayward, Milpitas, or whatever).

Back in 1992 or so, someone wanted to move the Giants to Lathrop, Calif. where they were propising a DisneyWorld-style resort, complete with MLB stadium. The stadium proposal and eventually Gold Rush City were laughed out of town (that latter actually kept going long enough to allow developers to the approval to build 10,000+ homes). Name for the location: Central Valley ... hence Central Valley Giants.

Oh ... neither the New York Jets or the New York Giants play in NYC.
