Given how so much of the talk had been about Otsuka, I'm inclined to think this could have been a deal where the Mets said Cammy & cash for Nady and Otsuka, the Padres said no to Otsuka so the Mets said no money. If the money saved is turned around and goes to something good, this isn't a bad deal. But, as is often the case with trades, you need to see what else happens around them.

Interestingly, I'm hearing the Yanks are in serious talks to get Giles to play center, which would explain the Pads' desire for Cameron.

I like it as a cost-cutting move that brings in a guy who can play 1B with Jacobs if things stay, but like GH says, that saved money had better be used elsewhere or it becomes a bit of a "what was the point of that" kind of deal.

I'm hearing that Wagner wants to sign a 4 year deal for $ 40 million. It will definately fill our needs but Wagner is getting old. I'd rather see Ryan.

Also, there are some who are saying the Omar is going after both Hoffman and Wagner and have co-closers. That would be tough to adjust for teams. If they were setting each other up. Wagner a hard thrower and then Hoffman a changeup artist.

By the way, an initial offer has been made already according to ESPN

3 years, $30 million is the first offer. My guess is Philly matches it, Mets guarantee a fourth year and sign him.

It's looking that way. Marlins also send the Mets 7M, spread over the next 2-3 years. One of the lingering details is how the money is spread out.

Petit may never be more than a #3 pitcher and Jacobs has struggled in Venezuela so he's still a huge ?????.

Well, it looks like the Met's have three more things they have to address this offseason. They still need a 2B, a Catcher and a Closer. I guess these would be the best options that the Mets could do this offseason.

At Catcher, they can Sign Ramon Hernandez or Bengie Molina, or trade for Ivan Rodriguez or Paul Loduca (which I don't really like at all).

At 2B, they still have the option of signing Furcal (I don't think they will because he's too expensive), trade for Luis Castillo (sounds like that's where they are going), sign Mark Grudzielanek or Nomar Garciapparra (who would be a major risk)

At Closer, they are still going for Billy Wagner. He is a bit expensive but we definately need a closer. Trevor Hoffman is out there too. The last option would be to use Heilman to close and go elsewhere.

I really hope the Mets get these problems addressed. I don't think we need Manny or Soriano. I'd rather them get these holes filled before going for more big time players.

I just listened to Delgado's press conference introducing him as a Met. I was very impressed with the way he handled himself. He's clearly a very intelligent guy and he deftly answered all the questions, switching seamlessly from English to Spanish to Spanglish when the situation warranted. He even answered the inevitable flag/God Bless America questions well and made it clear he would be standing during that time. As long as he's productive Met fans are going to like him. Of course, if he's unproductive he's not going to get nearly the same wiggle room that Beltran got last year.

So my Yankee fan friends and relatives are going nuts over the money, saying Mets fans can't say anything about Yankee payroll anymore. Thing is, at least so far, the Mets haven't really added payroll for this year.

Off the books: Piazza ($16M), Cameron ($7M), Mientkiewicz ($3.75M) = $26.75M

Added: Delgado ($14M), Wagner ($10.75M) = $24.75M

Interesting.
