In the olden days, when RnF+ wasn't calculated by position, Garry Maddox and his 137 RnF+ (compared with Mays' 135 and the Eagle's 129). Nowadays, Andruw Jones' 120 blows away the 110 by Hunter, 107 by Griffey, and paltry numbers of the other listed players.

I'd take Maddox over anyone. Ever.

Garry Maddox??? Come ON! He was a fine ball player but not one of the top 20 all around centerfielders of all time!

Mike Schmidt called Garry Maddox the greatest defensive centerfielder he had ever seen. From about 1970-1990 I doubt anyone was better.

Defensively, while I don't have the stats in front of me, I think my list would be Andruw Jones, Willie Mays, Dom Dimaggio, Richie Ashburn, Joe Dimaggio, and Garry Maddox. Offensively no one touches the Mick and Willie, altho I'd probably throw the Duke in there too. Overall I'd go Mays, Mantle, and Mags with no one else really coming close to those 3 guys.

That said, I think Andruw Jones will be a first ballot hall of famer in 2022. The Win Shares system sees his per-season defense to this point in his career as being worth about 33% more than Mays in his prime, he's learned how to take pitches this year (on pace for 93 walks, almost 20 more than his previous career high), and he has monster power in a park that is difficult to hit homeruns in. Also consider that he's 6 months younger than Pat Burrell...

I'd take Ty Cobb myself.

Well, he didn't have much power, so there goes the "All-Around" and Babe Ruth was better all around.

Cobb had a slugging percentage of .512 playing the bulk of his career in the dead ball era. He was no slugger but hit the ball plenty hard.

Edmonds is one hell of a defensive CF. I believe that Puckett might make my top ten, or very early in 11-20.

Defense- Garry Maddox or Dom DiMaggio
Offense- A healthy Mantle or Joe D
Overall- Willie Mays

Here is a list of some other good defensive CF not mentioned:

Omar Moreno
Gary Pettis
Lenny Dykstra
Dwayne Murphy (I think he was CF...my memory is fading)
Brett Butler (at least for a stretch in the mid-80's)
Devon White (earlier in his career)
