OOTP 'Raw' Ratings Question

When ratings are initially created for OOTP, it's my understanding that ZiPS projections are utilized and then 'adjustments' are made to reflect opening day rosters so the AI doesn't make unrealistic roster moves.

Is that remotely accurate?

If that is remotely accurate, how feasible is it to get a release of the initial ratings input prior to any adjusting?

TIA!

I believe last year when I asked about defensive ratings (specifically Zimmer's defense, as a Jays fan) I was told that they fudge defensive numbers sometimes so that (for example) the AI Jays don't start Zimmer over Teoscar.

Okay, that's what I've heard/read as well. Defensive information isn't as important to our league as the offensive ratings input - and pitcher information is a huge concern for us.

Yeah, they are definitely going to make some adjustments that will include offensive ability and pitching ratings to try to get the AI to use the players' as they are expected in the upcoming season.

They do try to do this reasonably, so aren't going to completely nerf a player if what the "real life" team is doing just doesn't make sense based on the projection.

Also, they are generally transparent about this so you could potentially start a thread requesting information on which players have been adjusted.

That would be awesome, but it seems like less work to just make the initial ratings input available as a release or a patch for leagues wanting to mirror the ZiPS release as closely as possible. I guess that's more my question...would it be better to PM one of the mods on that or might they see the question here?

I don't think any of us have anything to do with that. You'd want to ask someone at OOTP like maybe lukas.

Don’t listen to him, or rather you should always PM kq76 for all of your developer related questions. I hear kq76 in particular has the pipeline to the devs. He is the dev whisperer.

Hah! I wish. Devs, please see my wishlist. No, like most everyone else here I'm sure they just barely tolerate me.

Not sure about that:

From: https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...=335982&page=8

MathBandit-
“I don't know if this is beyond the scope, but for the defense ratings are you able to say what they 'should' be (if AI decision-making wasn't a factor) - including making Lourdes or Teoscar worse defensively if they're currently being a bit propped up to help the AI start them - so that I can use true outfield ratings for my Jays sim (where AI decision-making is a non-factor)? I do fully understand if that's not something you're able to do but thought I'd ask.”

Lukas Burger-
“No, sorry really not even possible to say on that.”

Yeah, that was in August, well after the fact for most of the changes.

If the conversation is started now for 2023 perhaps they will document them.

Although, when it comes do "Defensive Ratings" I'm not sure how much of a base Zips actually gives them. So, those are likely being created in a different way and I have no insight into that process. I imagine they would be better able to keep track of the players for which they have adjusted hitting and pitching.

I would certainly encourage that; I was just trying to cite some relevant discussion for context as to expectations. No doubt, however, the earlier and more clearly articulated the greater the chance of accommodation.

To clarify that was in April, not August.

I was just going to check that, because that was my memory as well. More support for the idea that, if lead time is indeed a factor, the request should be proffered in the near future.

Forgive my ignorance, but is anyone (you mentioned Lukas) I should ask on this board, or is this a ‘contact OOTP directly’ kind of question?

Ah, I see what happened. The page in the thread I was linked to was for August...likely because I have my settings for more posts per page (there are only 5 pages in that thread for me).

Lukas is the member of the OOTPD team that is most involved in the rosters and also posts here.

He's your best bet to contact. Although it sounds like others have tried to get similar information in the past so it may be a long shot.

I look at lukasberger as like OOTP's point man for anything you're not sure about. Whether we should or not, I don't know.

I learned this awhile back and others might like to make use of it too. If you know a user's exact handle, instead of finding a member via the memberlist page here, you can use the following link (just swap out my username for theirs):

https://forums.ootpdevelopments.com/...?username=kq76

EDIT: Notice it uses "username" as the parameter instead of "u", but it is otherwise the same.

Right. So the key here is to contact kq76 every 5 minutes. I’d set up a bot to do so. He can’t ban you for it because it’s not against the rules.
