When are we going to stop calling computer opponents AI?
Now that we are on the doorstep of having real AI (despite the continued failure of Tesla's Self Driving feature) are we going to stop calling computer opponents AI? Referring to a computer opponent as AI goes all the way back to the days of DOS games despite it being abundantly ludicrous that any such feature would fit in games distributed on a 1.44mb floppy.
Back then a computer opponent was a limited number of IF->THEN choices and usually wasn't even capable of randomizing the choices. The fact that we now have huge games that won't even fit compressed on a DVD shows extent of the opportunity for a better computer opponent, perhaps one that even approaches being a contender to be called AI. However so much of the extra code in games has gone to graphics and gimmicks, not to improving the computer opponent. However the gaming industry's misnamed AIs perform better than Tesla's Self Driving. At least when game programs crash there is no physical damage. Last edited by Brad K; 06-15-2024 at 10:05 PM. |

They are AI, weak one but AI nonetheless... feel free to call it what you want since nobody here is the police of your thought.

Tesla failed at self driving and their cars have so many defects they'd be driven out of the market place if they were ICE vehicles. But they're good at the electric part. So they're going to get out of the car biz and concentrate on their core competency by making motors for electric pencil sharpeners.
They're hoping to attract some of the best AI programmers from the gaming industry. When the software guys come on board they're going to make the pencil sharpeners programmable. C'mon, you guys are so serious all the time! |

That makes even less sense doesn't it? (I've always been under the impression it only stands for Central Processing Unit wrt computers, but maybe it stands for something else as well?)
That's the way I look at it. Maybe one of them deserves a new name, but they're both AI AFAIU. Brad used "computer opponent" in his OP, but I don't think that expresses any real difference. Maybe we just need to prefix the new AI with another letter like E for Evolved. I was thinking B for Beyond as in AI that is intelligence beyond humans, but I like the sound of EAI better, or just EI (do we really need the word artificial to remind ourselves that we created it?).

Whatever we call them, we currently can't trade with them in online leagues

Heuristically Programmed Algorithmic Computer or
HAL 25 or just HAL seems appropriate. If you have seen 2001 a space odyssey you will know what I am talking about.

I’m afraid I can’t do that Dave.

In games it's always been short for COMPUTER opponents. Like Tecmo Superbowl was always great for MAN or CPU to show what teams were controlled by the computer or manual.

Why would we stop? It is called AI because it use algorithms and computational techniques to mimic human like behavior and decision-making processes. Whether it does it well or not is a different conversation.
