I have not been able to replicate the problem on my end in a new save, the original save I posted still has the problem but the update must have fixed it for new games only.

The star system is more of a recommendation than a hard and fast rule of how a player performs. There is so much that goes into the game sim that goaltending is probably no t the only problem as well...

Transfers between AHL and NHL

Don't know if this is a bug but AHL teams seem to be transferring players to non-affiliated NHL teams

This is in the second season of a standard playthrough

A lot of them will, but every so often you will develop an offensive one. With defense you usually have to trade or find free agents to sign to get the right mix.

Not to mention its pretty easy to adjust the cap to make it so the trades don't happen, just like how the cap would go up in real life and is expected to over the next few years.

If you enable commissioner mode you can manually edit the contract, since I don't think the update will fix a current save when it comes to contracts.
