An Unofficial Filling the Hours Waiting for 6.5 Thread

We all are looking forward to it and we might see it in a couple weeks, maybe longer. Seeing it will be great no matter when it happens.

What are we doing while filling the gap? OOTP life as usual? Leagues on hold until its release? Polishing up existing leagues in preparations, assigning the new logos you always wanted to use, learning new utilities, monitoring each and every new post in the v6 Discussion Forum?

Thought I'd step out of character, just a tad, and wander into a more lobby oriented environment with the notion that - given that I'm on a bit of a hiatus with my solo fictional league - I'd expand my OOTP horizons and ask about the peripheral activities surrounding gameplay, if there are any. It seemed a good time to inquire.

Curious.

Always look forward to your contributions and suggestions.

I am new to online play and wonder if I should wait for this 6.5. Will alot of leagues be going to that typically? Has OOTP issued a mid-version release that you have to purchase in the past? Has that sold well?

Any advice would be nice.

I'm afraid some hardline onliners are going to have to address that one for you, although it looks like a v6 to 6.12 patch should set you up for an easy leap to the expansion purchase. I suspect the majority of v6 leagues will be upgrading, but I don't want to speak for them. One of the veterans will no doubt give you a heads up. I'd suggest searching, but the only real term I think would yield you less than a thousand results might be upgrade - and make sure you select the option to search entire posts. I think it defaults to that already.

In the meantime, I've noticed since restoring my league that I didn't note in any location the League Totals I'd finally established for launching this league. Guess that will occupy a little of the time between now and the release.

Good luck.

This idea of starting the new league with ratings instead of Ratings Off Talents Only has me losing sleep. Looks like at least the few days will be spent looking over a growing list of re-visitations: League Totals, Ratings On/Ratings Off, IF Ratings On which system or combination, and continued background on the dynasty. Thinking that should keep me occupied for a while.

If anyone can point to any specific threads they remember being significant be sure to pass them my way. Thanks in advance.

Same ol' same ol' here. Running my solo league, tied at one game each in the ALCS. The best player in my team's 20 year history has announced he's hanging up his cleats at the end of the season. When I read about the chance for a player to come out of retirement with v6.5, I thought about holding off on this season, but decided against it. He's 39 and his ratings and stats have dropped throughout the season. He's going out with a bang, though, batting .300+ with 4 dingers in 6 postseason games. Goodbye Freddie Pena. One more season, even a mediocre one, would have given you 3,000 hits and 600HR, but you're right, it's time to move on. Won't be the same team without you.

I was just starting a new solo fictional when the announcement came. I tabled it and decided to play out this season as the Mets with Toadfreak's roster set. Everything is breaking my way and the Mets are now 47-20 and lead the NL east by 10.5 games. Pedro, Benson and Zambrano have pitched incredibly good and Glavine and Ishii were very solid, although Ishii just got hurt and will be out for month.

Well, now I'm not getting anything done. I'm addictively returning to this forum to see what new posts have developed and thinking there may be some forecast about the release date. Been awhile since I hovered over a forum like some hungry bird near a carcass. A good rush of adrenaline for me and I have to assume the community as well.

But no kidding. I'm actually having trouble reading a complete page on the web elsewhere without clicking over here and refreshing. Silly, eh?

The 6.12 version works pretty well for me since after considerable time and effort I've figured out how to set up each season now in my historical career leagues. My main concern with putting things on hold until 6.5 is released is that firstly it may not come out as soon as they say and secondly when it does come out that it may need patches which could delay things for quite some time. I had a nice career league going using 1961 season which would of been finished in 2 weeks or so but suffered a hard drive crash sunday losing it . I've decided restart it with 6.12 so in the event 6.5 needs patching and really won't be usable til they release those i'll have something to do in the meantime. If 6.5 comes out as scheduled and needs no patching I won't be so far into my season that i can't start over.

cheers

Hoping that the 6.5 release will be as much a surprise as the announcement itself and that this weekend will constitute mid-June. I have most of my ducks in a row to start the new league, including (finally) more dynasty background, and it looks like I'll have some time to myself on Sunday. Wouldn't that be great?

Not that I'm anxious or anything. But I am sure looking forward to evaluating the AI handling of signings, releases, and waivers. To see this issue resolved alone is going to be a treat. Hope I'm not being too optimistic on any front.

cleaning up my OOTP folder

Ever since I discovered how to generate fictional players (yeah - dedicated player since OOTP3...... but I only realized "Create Custom league" could be used to re-pop universe of players last fall) -- I've fallen into a habit of constant league creation.... I usually run a few seasons, then start another league.

In fact -- I've gotten so manic on league creation, I usually end up creating 5 or 6 leagues until I get a player pool I like (I've got high standards for minimum number of prospects, mix of prospects across key positions, etc).

Add to this -- I've got customized team and league settings, plus various league folder templates, graphics, photos, origin generator data files.... etc.--- my OOTP6 folder is more than a gig and a half big!

Soooo.... I think the next few days will be a good opportunity to clean this up a bit.

Also -- without starting the whole "so give me a specific date for release" pleas -- what is standard QA time for something like this? When my company develops software, we generally have a 2 week cycle of QA, revise, re-test (assuming no big issues)....

Just wondering -- are we likely a week away? 2 weeks?

I also keep checking the page way too often I am so excited about the new features of the game. I am most excited about in season retirements and players coming back. I just keep playing OOTP to help the time go by until I can play a better OOTP!

I'm more excited for the 7-day lineups. What a god send that is to online leagues!

true

but what happens when most team use highly rested starters.

you will never know who's the opponent pitcher will be next.

so its going to be hard to set up a line up to face a certain pitcher.

You'll have a pretty good idea of who the upcoming pitchers will be. But I'm not as interested in setting my lineups against specific pitchers as much as I am setting my lineups to get a specific guy some rest on a specific day and have his scrub backup bat 8th instead of in the cleanup spot, as he would in 6.12. Still, I wish it wasn't just 7-day lineups, but a customizable length of time that could be changed to fit my 7-day per sim league or my 15-day per sim league as need be. This is a big step in the right direction though.

I'm a bit curious how this will present itself or function for solo play as it is designated as a feature included for online leagues. I've always assumed those features are applicable to both situations just as I export information to my "web page" even if it is simply on my own hard drive for viewing as a solo player.

I was just looking at the sceenshot of the 7 day this morning and also wondering how I can use it in my solo league. I'm really hoping and guessing that I'll be able to use the feature as a way to look at the week coming up and the expected pitching matchups. It will be nice to look ahead and see what days I'll want to go with my best lineup and the days I'll be looking to get some of my stars a day off. It should be a great addition.
