Could Livan Hernandez throw 200 pitches tonight?

9th inning up to like 160 and still has his control. About to go extra innings if the Marlins can hold the Nationals in the bottom of inning. Could Frank Robinson be stupid enough to send him back out.

But those 10 pitches might have been the critical 10 like we've seen since Cordero has now replaced Hernandez

150 is a lot of pitches to throw. Hernandez does have some wear on his arm.

Well it looks like it is going to pay off. Marlins are giving this game away.

Pitch counts are overrated. Hernandez isn't young, doesn't have an injury history, I see no problem with him throwing 160 pitches.

Like Ungrateful Dead said, besides this is not the 1st time Livian has thrown 150 pitches for a CG

Is it a coincidence that he has really never been hurt?

There's a Nats blogger who believes Livan is pitching in the style of Christy Mathewson and the hurlers of a hundred years ago. The interesting part of the entry:

Quote:
I'm pretty confident in saying Livan succeeds because he half-asses it out there on the mound. He goes reaaaallly Old Skool (Like Christy Matthewson old) and doesn't throw 100% on every pitch. It's simple machismo. He knows that he doesn't need to throw hard to every batter, because he's better than them.

Think about the homerun derby. Hitting the ball isn't easy. And even in a situation like that, where conditions couldn't be more optimal, the top sluggers in the game still hit cans of corn. (Yes, I know it's not a perfect example, but you get the essence of what I'm getting at.)

Livan knows, as Christy Matthewson used to advocate, that some batters will just get themselves out -- whether it's swinging at junk, or even hitting a scorching liner right at someone.

So, when he's facing a weak batter, he'll loosen up, saving the juice in his arm for the big batters, or a crucial situation in the game. And this confidence also means that he's not afraid to pitch around batters. He knows that he can bear down when he needs to and get out of any jams that may arise.

That's an interesting. Moreso, if it's the truth.
Anyone hear/see anything else about this possibility? I'm intrigued.

Many of those guys, though... including Mathewson flamed out by the time they were in their early thirties.

I'm not sure about Mathewson, I think his back problems that led to his flameout were war related.

I don't think I'd ever want push a guy past 145 and I'd only that in very rare circumstances. Honestly, I find it werid that a guy can throw 150 pitches and still be pitching well enough to warrant leaving him in the game.

As for Hernandez, what do you think about this?

Being gassed by the Germans did not help out his cause.
