11-year-old girl throws all-strikeout perfect game in boys' league

Brownell is the only girl in the Oakfield-Alabama Little League baseball program in this community about halfway between Buffalo and Rochester. On Saturday, that didn't stop her from accomplishing something league officials can't remember anybody -- boy or girl -- ever doing.

She threw a perfect game for the Dodgers in an 11-0 victory over the Yankees.

How dominant was she? She struck out all 18 batters she faced in the six-inning victory. She never got to a three-ball count on any of them.

. . .

Katie, who is in 6th grade, also pitched a one-hitter in the first game of the year. She accounted for all 15 outs in the five innings she pitched in that game. She had 14 strikeouts and got the other out on a grounder to the mound that she tossed to first.

"She's been pitching for three years, but she's really came on and excelled this year," said Jeff Sage, manager of the team, who didn't get to see Saturday's game because of his job as a firefighter in Rochester. "She bats really well. She's a solid, all-around ballplayer."

At the plate, Katie's hitting .714 through the team's first three games.
Good for her. I knew a couple girls who wanted to play baseball, were forced to play softball, dominated, got bored/frustrated, and stopped playing. Nice to see at least one girl play where she wants to, and play well.

Congrats to her, I'm sure that's a huge confidence booster for an 11-year old who might have already been exposed to athletic sexism.

Hopefully she keeps getting the chance to play in the best male leagues until she either can't keep up anymore or fits right in.
Good to see

I agree with what Fallschirm said, I hope she does really well right into college and maybe she could become a major league Pitcher

In my town, there's usually one or two girls who play very well. A couple have really dominated. When I was coaching about 15 years ago, one was the starting SS on the allstar team. She eventually was allstate in HS girls softball.

It would be cool if she one day made the majors. I have a feeling that if a woman ever does, it will be as a pitcher.

Good for her, she'll be able to cherish the game for the rest of her life. At 11 though it doesn't make any difference if it's a guy or a girl, the muscles have just started developing.

It's hard to believe she's five foot eight at age 11. I would have been scared to face her when I was 11.

How did she do that without a penis!?

/sarcasm

But seriously wow thats pretty amazing. I used to play with Danny Ainge's niece in basketball and she was pretty good as well. Same with all the girls I have played with in youth baseball.

I actually tried out for Little League when I was younger, and was advised to join the girls' softball league. I think they'll only let girls in if they are superstar quality. I was medicore, and I probably would have been lambasted every time I struck out.

More power to the girls who can actually do it though. I think that's awesome.

I grew up in Delray Beach, FL. We had a girl who played on one of the teams in Little League. She was good enough to play, but wasn't all that great. I remember pitching to her. I was so worked up about not giving up a hit to a girl that I accidentally drilled her in the side and made her cry. I felt like the biggest loser...

It would be cool if this girl gets better as she gets older. Hopefully, they won't try to force her to become a softball player if she doesn't want to.

Hah! I did that to the girl on our team once when I was pitching batting practice. I felt like such a douchebag.

This reminds me of that girl in Dodgeball who gets her team disqualified for steroids or something. I can't remember.

But I don't think she's on the stuff .
