Specialist Reliever

I'd like to see a guy in the bullpen you can designate as the lefty specialist reliever or righty specialist reliever (to get those key outs in key situations against lefty or righty batters).

It would be nice to have a super-AI management function that would set up who should come in for particular situations, like: Between innings 7 and 9, if our team leads by 2 or more and a lefty is up, this player should be brought in.

I'm not a big fan of lefty specialists (too limited in their use to justify the roster spot), but I do think it's important to use the right guy at the right time.

I think this wouldn't add anything. this is more a game play thing than an AI issue. There are too many variables, that a manager has to consider. Is this the right leftie to bring a specialist in for? is it the right game/situation? I think it would take a lot of programming for little gain on a feature that would best be addressed by simply playing the game rather than simming it.

I'd like a specialist spot. That way more specialist could be created. Most guys have the same ratings for both RHB and LHB. If a few pitchers developed into overpowering against one type and not another, that'd be sweet.

Whatdya mean leftspecialists dont deserve a roster spot? Look at Mike Meyers. He's made a carrer of dealing with lefties only. Sure he pitches 80 games but only like 50 innings, but he's a valuable guy for the team he's on (currently the Sox). He has lefties to a .179 average over about 10 years.

Part of my Master Plan For Relievers would be to have different relief roles for different eras. Maybe in the 90s you'd get LOOGYs, but in the 1970s it should be possible to use a guy like Mike Marshall (106 G, 218 IP one season!), and in the 1950s reliever usage should be more along the lines of guys like Ellis Kinder and Elroy Face. In the 20s and 30s and before, you'd use your starters in relief a lot.

I'm all for a "tech tree" kind of set-up for this kind of thing. Yes, I know that this is something that would only make sense for historical leagues and lots of people like to use the game to play out current teams, but even at that... I think that doing stuff like this would make things a lot more interesting for gamers of all levels.

I was saying this for a while, and Markus put in the lefty matchup slider. It helped, but i'd still much rather have this because that slider doesn't address individual lefties who are much better against lefties.
