Who is the real Champion? - STRAW WEIGHT DIVISION

I'll start this off with the division no one really cares about. Absolutely great idea Ian!

I will keep the poll open for two weeks. Then I will run a single elimination tournament with the top eight vote getters to see if TBCB agrees with our selection.

Please discuss, shout (if anyone cares that much about straws ) and offer any opinions that you may have.

This should be more fun with some of the more popular weight divisions.

VOTE FOR UP TO THREE FIGHTERS

EDIT: I made a mistake with the Boxrec links below so when you click on them, the page shows the fighter's name in place of all his opponents. If you just click on his name in one of the opponent slots the right card comes up. I think I have the hang of it now -

Herry Amol
5(2)-0-0
Current Indoesian Champion (1 def.)

Isaac Bustos
24(13)-7-3
Lost his WBC belt to Takayama in early April

My Champ Is for sure Ivan Calderon he is undefeated and a solid fighter and i think could take care of any of the other strawweights but there isnt enough money or tv time for Strawweights to matter.

I am taking Mayol because he is young, has power and has learned to defend with his OPBF belt.

I'm taking Rachman even though he drew last month and he is aging quickly. There haven't been many straws that were as good and could hold the weight for as long as he has.

Takayama may be the best of what is left, but I would rather be voting after he defends in August.

Porpramook (one of SAL's picks) looks like a pretty good champ too although he doesn't seem very busy. I don't know anything about him but I wonder if he is an active Muay Thai too.

One last plug for Mayol

6 of his last 8 fights were stoppage wins and he had a knockdown in the one full decision (the other dec was TD due to a head but). In that span he stopped Genki Ohnaka and Ernesto Rubillar - both pretty tough customers. He's only 23.

Calderon is good but he is already 30 and needs to get out of this hemisphere. It would be interesting to see how he fairs against some of the harder punching Asians.

Thats a good point Calderon has never really been tested by the asian fighters maybe if mayol and claderon both but toghther some more good wins they could fight but there isnt the demand for the fight.

Absolutely zero, unfortuantely. Everything in this division that means anything takes place in Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and to a lesser extent Japan and Korea.

Puerto Rico's Ivan Calderon (22-0) successfully defended his WBO minimum weight crown, stopping Noel Tunacao (38-8-2) of the Philippines in the eighth round. He did alright recently against this Asian fighter but i can read you next post already Tunacao is not on the level of a Mayol and you would be a hundred percent right but i guess you fight who u can.

That actualy is a good notch for Calderon even though Tunacao is at the end. Is he retiring after this one?

I haven't read anything or seen anything to say he is going to retire but with no true prospect for any advancment in the division i would think it would probably be best.

Eagle Kyowa is one hell of a fighter - He lost his last fight because of a freak shoulder injury (after clearly winning all rounds before this took place in the 4th round ...Or maybe it was the 3rd round).

If he stays at Straw he will definitely win a Title again. He is young, strong and can box.

I. Calderon is very solid (very technically sound) but he can't punch a lick.

There simply hasn't been a great SW champ since R. Lopez left and R. Sor Vorapin got old (they were two of the best ever).

As for Rachman.....While he is a tough old timer....he was given a gift win over Reyes. I have the fight on tape and Reyes clearly deserved the nod (especially with being champion going in).
