External HDD & OOTP6

So, I'm investing in an external HDD to move my data around my home LAN without having to chew up bandwidth on the router when the wife & kids are playing wonky online games like Neopets on the main machine.

The question: If I yoink OOTP6 from my local internal HDD on that main machine and reinstall it on the incoming USB-based external HDD, I'm wondering if it will actually run on, say, the laptop I may plug the external HDD into.

Anyone ever try this?

I've been thinking of the same set up, but haven't yet tried it. I can't see why it wouldn't work. If it rains this weekend maybe I'll try.

Well if you have the external HDD plugged in to your laptop, and then install OOTP6, then choosing the location(your external HDD), there's no reason why it wouldn't work. The game has to be installed on the OS that is running the program. Where it stores it's main files is up to you, but it will put in some dll files into your laptop when installing, along with some registry entries.

That's what I was worried about.
Hrm.
My lappies that I'd play it on are running Win98; the desktop XP. Are the DLLs significantly different between the two installs, such that the differing OS in the boot drives of the machines would cause an issue?

There should be no problem. Just follow this step by step:

1. Make sure that the external HDD is properly connected and that your laptop recognizes it. If it's windows 98, you may need to install a driver for it.

2. Install the game on your laptop. When the installation process reaches the part where it asks you where you want to install, simply choose "browse" and locate a folder on your external HDD.

3. Continue the install.

4. Now, every time you want to play OOTP on your laptop, you'll need the external HDD to be plugged in at all times or the program will not work.

Follow this and you'll have no problems. There's nothing to worry about with DLL's. Your computer will keep them organized. The only problems occur when two different programs use the dll's with the same name, in the same location and one earlier dll gets replaced with a new incompatible dll. This is something that happened with earlier versions of windows, but this is obviously not going to happen to you. If you are running Windows 98, just test out all your programs before and after installing OOTP, if you want to be sure. But seriously, I wouldn't worry about it.

What about the licensing issue? Wouldn't OOTP have to be licensed on all the PC's, since Lincense Control, I assume, is kept on the internal HD of the PC, and not on the external HD?

I don't think so, the licence should be with the drive where the software is installed. But you may have a point. Can Steve Kuffrey comment?

As long as you don't have more copies in use than the number allowed (OOTP allows two copies), there should be no other restriction I think????

The license has to be installed in the Windows directory. So, if you run an OS off of the External drive, then it might work, otherwise, nope.

I should say that if you are playing the game off the external drive, any computer you hook the external drive must have elicense installed on it with the OOTP 6 licensed on it also. You couldn't just take the game from PC to PC because you have an External Drive.

Make sure that you do not have NTFS on the portable hard drive, as the WIN98 will not be able to read it.

Nope. Won't work. The game will only work where the registry has had the proper entries. Meaning the Operating System where the install was done would have to be running for the program to run, regardless of where the program installed it's main files. That's what "installing" does...puts the necessary entries in the registry so the .exe and subsequent dll's function.

To run OOTP on another pc would require another, separate installation of the software, placing a new set of files and registry entries into the external HDD and local HDD.

That's what I said, I just missed 2 letters.
