Editing The Babe

I started a historical league in 1915 using the Phillies. I traded Eppa Rixey (3 or 4 stars) for 1-star Babe Ruth. His batting ratings were crap. I edited his talent and put him in triple A to develop. By 1917, he had a 49 contact and 3 power rating. I was able to get him 4 contact points in ST. By 1917, he started hitting well, so since my league is in June, I decided to give him a boost. I put his contact up to 65 and power to 80 or 85 and moved him up to the majors. First at-bat?? HR!! It wasn't his first ML at-bat, though. In one week, he has 2 HR, 7 RBI and is batting .500. Should be interesting to see what he does for the rest of his career since he's only 22.

Now, my only problem is that I have 6 all-star outfielders and another 5-star prospect in triple-A on an already pretty stacked team. I can't figure out who to trade and for what because my team has no weaknesses.

That's what happens when you edit players for the better; they get better.

Wow..there's a rocket scientist observation!!

It was more of surprise that he hit one in the first at-bat than anything else.

I wonder why he was crap. Really, you shouldn't have to edit the Babe. Did he get a chance to take hits in talent and ratings? If so and you editted him back up, I say boo!

Because when starting in a league in 1915, he's imported as a pitcher, not a hitter. His talent ratings were that of a normal pitcher for hitting, 41 contact, 3 power. I got him up to 49 contact in 3 years and no power increase. His pitching ratings were good. I didn't touch those. But he wouldn't develop as a hitter. Baseball isn't baseball without the Babe.

Lahman's, or Ankit's?

I would suggest using one of Ankit's databases: 5.0 or the career average database. When you get to 1915 yes Ruth imports to the draft as a pitcher. Go to League/Basic Setup and then click "edit free agents" at the beginning of the season. Find Ruth and delete him. Then click import player from database and manually import the 1918 babe ruth (ruthba01 1918). Then find Ruth and edit his birthday, which will now be three years off I think. In fact, you migh want to bring Ruth into your league in 1914. Don't wait until 1918 to let Ruth come into the league. Because of the end of the dead ball era and since he is the first great hr hitter, he needs extra years of playing time so that when you get to the 1920's he performs as you would expect. If you don't bring him in early some of the leagues hrs get distributed to other players and Ruth will never hit more than 30hrs in a season for you.

I'd agree with Garlon. My personal experience with the databases is rather limited, but when I've used them I've found Ankit's to be much more to my liking. Garlon's technique is also tried and true.

i'm pissed off that you edited him AFTER trading for him.

come on now, that's just not a fair way to trade for players.

Not only has Ruth had an impact on Major League Baseball but he has added a great dilemma to OOTP players around the world.

Now, I hope that Barry Bonds can read this thread. Even if you pass the Babe's 714, remember that he spotted you more than a few seasons by being a pitcher(and being a good one at that!). How many HR's would you have if you had come in as a pitcher for as long as George Herman?

Answer: about 580

My apologies for hijacking this thread. It just presented an opportunity.

I rather just have George (in 1914) and a Babe (in 1918), so i get a pitchers career and a hitters career. My league.....My way!!!!

No apology needed. I agree with you totally. That's why Ruth has to be considered the greatest player ever. Not the greatest pitcher or the greatest hitter, but the greatest PLAYER. He could do both. All-around best.

ankit's solves the problem of babe and a few others like him. it imports george ruth the pitcher in 15 and then babe the sultan in 18. meaning we can all get the answer to that age old question...would ruth have made the hall of fame as a pitcher? Personally after a good many sims i dont think he would have. Occassionally he does but not consistently, and when u consider his real life propensity for over indulging its hard not to see him pretty much washed up as a pitcher by the time he reaches his early 30s.
