In my MLB, I feel its once again time to expand. The first time, I had Brooklyn and Washington. Now, I need 2 more cities. Which 2 cities do you guys think have the best chance of getting a team(if you think one is Washington or Brooklyn, dont post it because that doesnt help me). Thanks guys.

Hey Shorty,
I would say Portland, OR or Charlotte, NC or perhaps Buffalo, NY. The minor league teams in Buffalo usually draw pretty well. Todd |

Indianapolis draws very well for its AAA team. It either outdrew the Expos last year or was very close to the Expos total.
There's periodically talk about relocating a team here to Las Vegas. There's a good enough population base (about 1.2 million), there's just a question as to whether it would be supported enough.

Hmmm... Well perhaps down south it could be Nashville, or Norfolk, or Jacksonville.
If in the mid you could install one in Columbus, or Indianapolis, or San Antonio If out west you could put one in Portland. |

Do you think Nashville is a big enough city for a major league team?
-edit- The Sounds (AAA Pirates) don't draw extremely well, but then they lose every year, just like the pirates.... [ March 29, 2002: Message edited by: fluharty ]</p> |

Las Vegas is a great possibility in terms of fictional standards or for OOTP purposes but unrealistic in my opinion for MLB to consider. I think the gambling venues will keep the Major Leagues away awhile longer despite the large population base and the 70,000+ people that are moving there each year.
I would guess Memphis, Charlotte, and Portland are possibilities but don't discount cities outside the US like Mexico City and Vancouver entirely.

Sacramento or San Jose in California. Vancouver would be a good one in OOTP because you don't have to worry about the exchange rate.

Sacramento has been mentioned in the past, although usually in context with the relocation of the A's. You're right though, it probably couldn't support a team right now.

Charlotte, Memphis, Portland, San Antonio, Indianapolis all get duplicate votes from me. I'd also add, because they are dying for a pro sports team, Albuquerque.

Indianapolis, no way..
They're too close to Chicago and Cincinnati to ever really be considered. I like San Antonio.. And what about following the NBA's lead, Salt Lake or New Orleans? |

Throwing my two cents in:
Las Vegas - Your league doesn't have to contend with the problems of it being in a gambling haven like the real leagues. If marketed well it could draw tourist to Vegas as well. Portland - Minor leagues draw well, Mariners usually get a good weekend crowd from Oregon - a cool high speed train takes to Safeco and back. Good choice though, a natural rivalry there with the Mariners and it's lovely in the summer. Could reasonably expect to draw from all of Oregon on weekends (like the Royals in their good days). Indianapolis - I don't see why not. It supports basketball and football very well. San Antonio - Harder to say. The population is there, but the surrounding area is not densely populated. Somewhat like Portland, but seems less baseball friendly to me (and I live in Texas). Washington DC - I know this is considered already, but yes, absolutely. High population, high income a great combo. Brooklyn - Also covered, but the NY metro area supported three teams in the past. San Jose - If the A's don't move there someone should - again high population high income. Vancouver - Harder to say. Great city, but for baseball to work the team there would have to be smart. A crappy team would do as well as the Grizzlies a good team might do as well as the Rockies. Charlotte - Why not? Good population, good growth, dense area. Again a good team would establish a fan base, while a bad one would lose it a la Tampa. Columbus - Does Ohio need a team between Cleveland and Cincy? New Orleans - Couldn't keep the Jazz. Why would it keep MLB? Also, a small poor population base. I'd much rather be in NC. Buffalo - A smaller market (but don't think for a minute I believe the BS spewed by Beelzebub Selig about this - good teams make money, bad teams lose money, unless they're the Cubs of recent years). Buffalo supports its one pro team fanatically. I think it would do the same for baseball. And by the way - dilluted pitching for expansion is pure crap. There's plenty of talent in the minors and the supply of talent will rise to meet demand anyway - from Japan and Korea if necessary. NOTE- Cities without a multigenerational franchise don't support losers. (CF Cubs, Red Sox). So my point - no one out there should belive the sh*tstorm sent out by MLB regarding contraction. Baseball could easily expand rather than contract. |

A team couldn't be placed to San Jose or Sacramento, unless the A's are moving to Sacramento, as it violates both teams rights to the areas. Same reason the A's can't build their new park in Santa Clara, Giants have the rights to the area.

I live in Ohio, my sister lives in Columbus. They put hockey there in the Bluejackets, because it would be the only pro hockey team in the state.
Columbus is all about Ohio State. I'm not sure baseball would fly. You have lifetime Indans and Reds fans there now. I believe it would struggle for a dedicated fan base. Since we do have 2 Canandian teams, well for now, might I suggest Mexico City, Mexico?

I'd second the Salt Lake vote - seems they would have the population base and potentially the money to support a major league team. The Jazz do well there and I think lack of a facility is the only reason there isn't talk of NFL or MLB relocation there. San Antonio is another, and if you want to talk about a pretty good baseball city, what about Oklahoma City? Seems they just built a new stadium for the Redhawks not long ago so I don't know if it's big enough or expandable, but the Big 12 tournament is talking about playing there and I've heard it is a first rate facility. Don't know much about Birmingham but it seems they would also have the population base.

Hawaii =the only problem would be travel arrangemnts
Oklahoma City - AAA baseball Draws extremly well there and they have a new park that could be expanded no oter pro franchises in the area other than dallas. Charolet nc Or Wash. DC - if you pick on of them u really couldnt select the other becauseit would put more teams in the east than any where else if youwant it to be balanced Las Vegas- would probably be the best fit for any team he income tourists and attraction plus the weather very few rain outs. Vancouver Or Ancorage would be a great fit and think of the backgrounds if they really were awarded teams Large Mountains and Animals all over . |

You guys mentioning Memphis obviously know nothing about Memphis, Tennessee. The city SUCKS, the fan base isnt there for baseball on the major league level at ALL!!
The guy who mentioned that Nashville's AAA team doesnt draw well forgot to mention that Hershel Greer stadium is antiquated and needs to be replaced BADLY. Nashville is head and shoulders above Memphis for ANY type of pro franchise. Memphis fans are very fickle and mark my words--The new NBA's Grizzlies will see that very soon!! I live much closer to Memphis than Nashville, but wouldnt go to any pro sports event there just b/c I'd have to travel to Memphis just to see it. The city sucks!! |
