New York Met's Official 2005 Thread
0-3 to start the season? C'mon. I mean it's only 3 games and all teams are going to have 3 game losing streaks but still. I hope they break out and start winning because I had very high expectations for them this season, possibly the most I've ever had in the beginning of any season (that I have been alive for). The "New" Mets? I want to see the what's new....losing is DEFINATELY NOT new...

The opening day lost must have been sour to pedro. No decision because of the bullpenn. Just like most of his career was in boston. lol

Forget lets meet the Mets. Lets beat the Mets. 0-162 this year and they're still going to finish ahead of the Nationals.

Well, if I remember right Joe Morgan was pretty convinced in his NL East predictions that Jim Bowden had the Nationals moving in the right direction so you've got that going for you.

As a Mets fan I can only say this....
Glad I'm still not watching baseball until Selig is gone =) Note: Does not apply to special moments. Ichiro's hit record, for example. |

The only negative for them during the preseason was the bullpen. Apparently it is as bad as people were predicting. I would like to see them fix this, they have a pretty solid team and I would like to watch them succeed on a consistent basis. If not them at least someone in the NL East other than Atlanta. Their fans are so jaded that it sickens me... |

The bullpen lost the first to games for them, really. Certainly the first one, and I'd say the second one.
I don't think the team looks as good on paper as others seem to think it does. It looks like a decent team, but I'm not entirely confident in them. I think they still need to fill in a couple more holes before they're really a good team. The best Mets team in the last 10 years, IMO, was the 1999 team, even though it wasn't until the next year that they made it to the World Series. Mike Piazza, John Olerud, and Robin Ventura were really great in the middle of the order. Defense was strong, and the pitching was pretty good, anchored by Rick Reed and Al Leiter. They had a lot going for them. Everything fell apart in 2001 and it hasn't been the same since.

I won't be able to watch 30 starts of Victor Zambrano...guy throws 4 pitches that miss by a foot, then gets guy swinging at balls and missing THEM by a foot. 100 pitches in 5 innings, gives up 2 runs. Not bad, but the guy wastes SO many pitches.
And throwing him back to back with Ishii, who gives up 2 hits over 7 and still lets up 5 runs. This team is going to be maddening to watch this year. Enough talent to do well in stretches, but enough blemishes to look very, very ugly at times. GH |

Well, 2 starters out of the rotation right now (Benson and Steve Traschel) lest you forget. I think the issue with the relief pitching is overblown, since it's not just the Mets that have a terrible 'pen. The Mets will win some games beating up on other teams' relief pitching as well. They are getting the hits, but nothing in the runs department.
It's painful that the best news as a Mets fan I have is that Rivera blew two consecutive saves. |

So how are these mets like umm...new.
First time I had seen them is last night. It was just one game but the defense looked like a typical Mets offense, which is to say they looked like a vaudville routine. The Japanese guy at second looks like he would have trouble playing first, and the leftfielder looked pretty lost in the outfeld except for that one excellent catch in the first. So who is going to replace Randolph by the time the road trip is over? |

I'd be happy with .500. You're right about the '99 squad, I still miss Olerud. |
