Do you go by stats or ratings when making starting lineups?
Do you go by stats or ratings when making starting lineups?
i go by stats, because sometimes a player will be hot for the current season, although his rating is only average. and i seen some player rating that looks great have bad stats for the current season. and no way i keep a player who batting under .150 with great rating in the lineup. If I have ratings on, ratings.
If you throw a six-sided die, you have a 1/6 chance no matter how many times you were screwed the last few rolls.

Same here, same logic.
But if two players are extremely close in their ratings then I probably use stats as a tie breaker, or which player I like better. It's really a matter of whim I suppose. Quote:

I'll go with rating for my base lineup by I'll try to ride a backup if he gets on a hot streak. I just finished a season last night and I almost game back from 10 games back in the start of september because I had my one star backup 2B bat .560 in September when he had hit .188 prior.

If I have ratings on, I use ratings. If just talent or stats only, stats.

Exactly. It's really based on how you play it - some of us like making it where there are no ratings, so then stats are all you have to go on. But even still, if two similar hitters are competing for a spot and one of them is riding a particular streak (hot or cold), then I will probably do some changing to play to that.

I emphasize stats for veterans, and ratings for rookies.

but it so hard to keep a player in the lineup with great ratings with poor stats for the season. do you guys still keep the player in the linup with great rating, but is having a bad season with stats? |

Stats. I look a lot at home/away breakdowns and same with lefty/righty.....add to that how a certain guy does against certain teams. Like the game I have going right now Davanon for some reason just dominates Texas. Now he pretty much gets that spot regularly against Texas and it gives me a chance to rest one of Glaus/Kotchman/McPherson

so if the stats look great then you play him even though the player rating is low? |

I tend to go by just ratings after I have a year or two finished. I do this because I like getting some stats in with the league settings before judging talent solely by stats.
Like right now I have started a fictional franchise and have star ratings turned on. After this season I will most likely turn them off and the year after that I will most likely turn ratings off as well.

I start the year with lineups by Ratings. Then, as the season progresses, it is mainly by stats.

In my solo games I normally turn the ratings and stars off, leaving just the fielding etc. stats on. In my online team however, I will be taking full advantage of the ratings being ON. This is not to say that I won't be keeping a close eye on the stats - if someone decides to have a hot year then I'll go with him even if the ratings say he shouldn't be first choice.

I find that ratings and stars are over-rated. I go by stats and performance. The manual I read even says the reports aren't an exact and that it's best to look at the performance moreso than ratings. For instance Mench for Texas has a 68 contact rating, 42 eye/patience and a very poor .253 batting average, while Molina has a 49 contact rating, 48 eye/patience and a .264 batting average. I also go with the right-hand/left-hand OPS figures to determine my lineups. The statistics are just more accurate than the ratings or talent to me.
Age is such a big factor also in the abilities of the players, one can have an old player with huge ratings and his performance is mediocre and have some young player with average ratings and his performance will be outstanding. Same for pitchers, I look at their overall averages vs RH/LH batters, I have some who's ratings wouldn't appear for them to have good stats, but, so far it has been correct in the averages vs the ratings and stars, hell I even sent a 4-1/2 star to the minor leagues because his era went to 6.08 and a 2-1/2 star player was bringing in 2.91 era. The 2-1/2 star player is younger by 8 years over the 4-1/2 star player 25 to 33 so there's the difference I see. Stars and ratings and talent are ok for suggestive applications of players, but, the statistics and performance really tell it all. I've never been really certain what advances the stars ratings in the first place, I have other players with near the same ratings and still 1 or 1-1/2 star players. This is why I really want a playable spring training addition to OOTPBB v7.x, so I can see how my old players really are vs my younger talent ready to take their place. |

Ratings will become a less reliable measure in OOTP7, when batters and pitchers will have particular counterparts against whom they are terribly successful or unsuccessful.
Ratings are generally a lot more accurate, since looking at stats is basically just looking at the results of performance with particular ratings. You do have to understand what the ratings mean and how they interact, though.
