Post Couple of things about the salary cap (including a typo)

Well first the typo;

During free agency, when you attempt to sign a player despite being well over the cap. A message will pop up and say "This would put your payroll above the salaray cap!".

Notice the "salaray".

On to more important things. If you try to implement a salary cap with the regular current up-to-date rosters (using Rolen's roster set), it will not force you to trade players immediately away in order to fit under the cap. In a sense, this salary cap is not a "hard cap". The only restriction of the salary cap is that you will no longer be able to sign free agents, as long as you're over the cap. However, you can make a trade that'll put you over the cap all you want, there is nothing to stop this.

Eventually through time, I believe the teams will level out since not even the "Huge" market teams can keep their talent. Eventually they'll see many of their players leave through free agency. In a way the small market lower payroll teams are better off, since the larger market teams will be burdened with the salary cap for several years (for several years they won't be able to re-sign their own players or sign new players).

One problem that might occur is those free agents who will not negotiate with a non-winning team. What they'll find is that most of the winning teams have payrolls above the salary cap, thus they won't receive any offers from them. Then what will happen to them? Their refusal to sign with a small market losing team limits their options severely, since in a salary cap strapped league, small market teams are probably the only ones that can actually sign them (only other option is if one of those small market teams happens to be a "winner", but that'll severely lower their asking price since the team won't have to go through much of a bidding war)

Warning to those that implement a salary cap in a current existing season (that never had a cap) or a new 2002 season with current rosters (like Rolen/Killebrew's roster set):

Do not put the cap number too low. I put the cap at $50,000,000 right at the start and what happened was in the next year of free agency, none of the top players got signed. At first I thought this was something that needed tweaking, since I figure once a player found out they won't be getting signed, they would accept a lower amount just to get signed. But this isn't always the case in real life, some people will hold out during the season (even missing a few games) for a better contract if they feel what they're being offered is way too low.

I found guys like Juan Gonzalez, Phil Nevin and a few other many hot free agents (around 10-15) being left with no team in 2003. They went through the whole season unsigned. I don't think it was a problem with the engine because these guys lowered their asking price considerably. Phil Nevin and Juan Gonzalez were asking for money in the $5,000,000 to $7,000,000 neighborhood. They ended up trying to settle for about $2,000,000 for a one year contract..........but they never got that even. I don't expect them to lower their offer any more. Its low as it is. Some guys who were first asking for around the $3,000,000 range lowered their offers to $1,000,000 and sometimes below (in the 6 figure range). Some still remained unsigned.

I would suggest implementing a cap at around $70,000,000 to $80,000,000. Then gradually lower it season by season. Eventually you could probably get it down to $55,000,000 or so, but I would probably stick with around $60,000,000. But always start a bit higher, to give some of those middle to upper class teams the opportunity to offer some money to the free agents, so that many of the top free agents don't go unsigned.

Great post and great advice. The salary cap, to me, is one of the best things in the game so far as realism goes and, until now, I wasn't sure just how it was implemented. Thanks for the advice.

I second Go Tribe's "huh?"

The salary cap isn't realism, MLB doesn't have a salary cap.

Its there for those of you who would prefer the salary cap that's all. It's not real.
