I've tried historical leagues with Frodo's ballpark.dat files but with the exception of the Polo Grounds, all early ballparks held roughly 8-15K fans. I've adjusted the capacities of stadiums so that teams wouldn't run out of money but I was curious if there was a common house rule people use for attendance capacity when running historical leagues like these. With the lack of homers, the batters aren't that bad but the pitchers will still ask for $10 million contracts.

I'm running a league where stadium capacity is "nominally" in the 9-20 thousand range. I've found that trebling all my capacities makes things balance out decently, then just dividing by three to get the "real" attendance. A hack, but I'm 10 years in and am satisfied with the results.

I turn financials off until I reach 1973 or whenever free agency becomes full blown.

Another thing you can try is jacking up the ticket prices. For a bad team, you can get $16-17 and still sell out. This makes a pretty significant difference over the course of a season. This also eliminates the need to do promotions, which cost $$$.
