Franchise Stars Rosters V2.2 Released
*Formerly called the All-time Roster Project*
You may download the rosters HERE This project features 28 teams. 26 teams prior to the last 4 expansion squads have their greatest players ever. The last 4 expansion teams have been combined into 1 squad in Arizona. There is also a Washington Grays franchise, featuring many Negro League stars and some Japanese players as well. Placed in the AL East (easily the league’s toughest division), the race between Washington, the Red Sox and the Yankees (with the Indians, Tigers and Orioles within an arm’s reach) is very fun to watch. Players are assigned ages based on when they played. Old-time players are older, leading to guys who started in the 20s-40s/50s being in their prime. Current players are included, but are young and need time to develop into their talents. This dynamic creates a situation where rosters need to be thought about and deal with up and comers. I’ve seen other projects resembling this one put every player at 18 or 20. To me, that defeats the purpose of a thorough roster, because some of the guys will ALWAYS be held behind another at the spot. Players are rated to correlate to performance in "80's style" baseball. Frank "Home Run" Baker will not hit a max of 12 home runs in a season as he did in his career, but closer to 30-40 to reflect the difference in generation. These guys aren't just imported, but studied and rated accordingly to make a true universe rated on the same scale. Without doing that, a set like this just doesn't work, IMO. This version completely overhauls the ratings to complement the OOTP 6 engine. The nature of the league being stars throughout, ratings look odd in some cases. I strongly suggest using this league with ratings off, just looking at stats to judge players. It’s more challenging, but it also won’t throw you off when ratings seem a bit out of whack in some cases. But I haven't done that as default. That's your call. The league starts in 2004...the June draft features greats from the Negro Leagues and Japan not included on the Washington roster. Take it for a test drive. Sim a year, or 10. See what you like, what you don’t, and make whatever adjustments you see fit to make it play how YOU want it to. And let me know what you do with it so I can look into it myself. That said, I REALLY like the way this all looks right now. Hopefully you do as well. Still to come: More players added (I already have a list going and ratings in the process of being calculated). Uniform #s and other cosmetic details Constant ratings work/adjustments (particularly on defensive ratings) Compilation of photos from Tiger Fan's remarkable photo pack Known issues: Steals are too high Ratings and league totals look odd. Although the end result is very good, I want to try and get these to look more reasonable to the eye. Negro League/Japan players added for the 2004 draft need further adjustments and detail Thanks for the interest, and the patience. I hope you all enjoy this project as much as I'm enjoying putting it together. Please keep feedback in this thread now. I changed the name because, frankly, the old name was way too broad. This is more to the point of what this set is. Thanks! GH Last edited by GForce; 03-06-2005 at 10:25 PM. Reason: New Version |

In order of addressing:
Adjusting ratings/league totals so the ratings look better. Right now, adjustments between them and league totals make ratings look somewhat bastardized. It's only appearances, but it drives me nuts, and if I had been more patient I would have worked better at messing with the league totals so they would complement the ratings, rather than messing with ratings. Already have this looking much better and should have this taken care of within a couple of days. Fix ratings for Negro League/Japanese players on draft board: Very important and should start work on this tonight or tomorrow. Fix steal ratings: This will take a few days, but I want to go through guys and check the steal ratings. Seems like there are too many guys stealing a ton of bases. And that just shouldn't be so. Add players: I have already compiled hitting ratings for the next batch of hitters. I need to figure out fielding and misc. ratings for them, then do the pitchers, and I can get them in. GH |

Added pitchers to come (Part 1):
* Note this is significantly more than the hitters. In many cases, particularly for more recent teams, this gets prominent relievers into the game. For older teams, there are some excellent pitchers overlooked when I polled guys for all-time rosters, and when I researched on my own. I'll post the additions for the remaining teams tomorrow. These selections were based on either 5 games appeared in per years the franchise has been in existence (for example, the Mets have 43 years, so if a pitcher appeared in more than 215 games for the Mets, he's in unless claimed by another team) or top 25 in team's ERA+. A few listed here may already be in. I'll double check that before completing the additions. Some good (and not so good) names make the cut. Enjoy! I believe I have the league totals/ratings adjusted correctly. One big mistake I've been making in this regard is trying to get them to mirror 80s stats but not allowing for the fact that younger teams, by virtue of how I'm doing this, are less advanced, which means they will bring the totals down offensively and league ERAs higher. I haven't been factoring that in and I should have. So the ratings look much more representative now.
I have conducted ratings conversions for Japanese hitters, but they are not entered yet. Initial defensive and general ratings are going to go by defensive awards and comments from Jim Albright, the best of the Japanese baseball researchers that I know of. He's been kind enough to trade e-mails with me in the past and hopefully I can pick his brain a bit again as I proceed with this. The draftees will likely be an ongoing revision process based on the more information I receive. I will do my best to make it as accurate as possible with what I know at the time, obviously. I'm going to read up on this board more regarding the impact on steal ratings and try to get that taken care of quickly. I don't imaging it being too hard. In fact, I'm not really sure my numbers are as off as I initially thought, so I'll look at this more as well. Not sure how I will handle subsequent versions/revisions as far as releases go. But the V3 release will be the one when all the players I've posted in the last few posts are added. There will be a V2.1, likely a 2.2, somewhere in between. Anything you've all seen, questions, comments, etc., fire away. GH |

After further review, a more specific plan.
v2.1: Will adjust league totals and ratings so the ratings look more legitimate and less confusing. This is near completion. Basically, a very small, somewhat cosmetic update. v2.2: This will adjust potentials for Negro League pitchers and Japanese players on the draft list. Negro League position players on the draft list should already be in good shape, but they will be gone over as well. v2.3: Speed and defense ratings need to be gone over in detail. The more I look at it, the more I realize the conversion from OOTP5 really messed with some of these. So I will be going over them for everyone and adjusting what needs to be adjusted. With the DIPS method, the fielding ratings are very important, and right now they are somewhat skewed, as are the speed/steal ratings. Then likely a bit of a pause until V3, which will add the players I've posted in the recent days. v2.1 should be out by Thursday. GH |

Fantastic work, I'm going to have alot of fun with these. The lone problem I've noted so far is that a handful of guys came in with some career stats that gives them a jump on the competition career-leaders wise. Most of them are fairly old and unlikely to add much to what they have, but Groh, Tinker, and Duffy in particular will distort the hitting career leaderboards for the first few seasons.
This is also far from devastating but when you zipped the files you retained your directory structure. If you unzip with subfolder info you get the readme put into a documents and settings folder with your name on it. I'm toying with the idea of doing a fantasy draft with the rosters and making a dynasty out of it. I'd go with my Red Sox but I don't think it'd be much of a challenge to run roughshod over the league for the forseeable future. Edit: on 2nd glance, it looks like the guys who haven't had their stats reset are those that have retired. Last edited by QuestGAV; 02-15-2005 at 02:20 PM. |

Version 2.1 of the Franchise Stars Rosters are now available HERE
New in v2.1 -- Ratings adjustments and league totals adjustments to make ratings look more representative. As it was, League Totals and player ratings looked out of whack although the results were good. This is really somewhat of a cosmetic change. -- Some added player ratings adjustments due to over/underrating NOTE: Please delete Retired.dat from your directory if you have previously downloaded this set. It includes career stats for some players that show up in career leaders. Get rid of it and that problem is solved. Enjoy! GH |

These rosters are alot of fun and it's obvious alot of hard work went into them. They could be subtitled: "Historical Replay for the Terminally Impatient".

Japanese position player talents have been entered. Japanese pitchers just need touchups, as I had already entered them in fairly accurately off the stats I had. I have limited data, obviously, but for the hitters I was able to take career stats, convert them into 550 AB numbers and work their potentials off of that. If anything, they are probably a little overrated, but I didn't adjust start ratings, which means they will be drafted with low initial ratings and have the chance to reach that potential, but certainly a lot could happen between draft and reaching that potential.
Negro Leaguers for the draft are in process now. Expect v2.2 sometime Wednesday or Thursday. GH |

It will be done gradually over subsequent versions, but I am also adding real uniform numbers for the players. Totally cosmetic, but good to have. Irks me seeing the play by play say "Number 97, Tom Seaver."

This week's revision will include the adjustments to the Japanese and Negro League players and will definitely include the corrected uniform #s as well. All I have left is the NL West, and I'll probably get that done tomorrow. The ratings are improved as well, particularly for the Japanese hitters and Negro League pitchers. Their counterparts needed few revisions and were in much better shape.
