God I hate Arbitration
I just posted about wonderful MR arbitration logic, now a great one for my 2B. H e dropped talent in 3 categories, went from hitting .278/.778 OPS to .236/.646 OPS, and so I expected his 3.6 mil arbitration award to go down. His estimate last year and after arbitration this year was 670,000... so you'd think he'd get somewhere around that in arbitration.
But no, he gets 3.6 million again. The game apparently doesn't believe in pay cuts for players who lose their ability. On further review, this happens to most any player who signs a real contract then still has arbitration years left after it (their pay stays the same), but the fact that it happens for players on arbitration the whole time is more disturbing. Isn't this what arbitration is for, to adjust a player's salary to their ability? If I wanted a long term contract, I'd sign one. Does OOTP 6 need more beta testers? Firstly, his talent level is irrelvant- or should be. Secondly, you forget to account for the fact that's he's older, and can now compare to older players - thus raising his likely award. Thirdly, Arbitration limits pay cuts to 20%.

Well, his stats are awful, he only plays because my team is awful too. He's one year older, which I don't think matters very much, he only rates as 2 stars as a 2B and that's probably generous. And, he got no pay cut at all, 20% would be nice.

I don't think there are pay cuts in ootp's arbitration system.

The easiest way to get around this problem is to offer your player a one year extension that's cheaper than his arbitration. I had an MR making 4.3 million (hefty, I know) after putting up a All-Star season with a 2.7 ERA.. then he posted a 7.07 the next year, and a 6.04 this year.. he's still got potential, so I signed him for 1.7 million. That's a good way to handle your arbitration.

Not a bug? It doesn't work in any way like arbitration should work. It's not how MLB does arbitration, and its not how anyone else would do it either. It's just a kluge, a rough draft so to say.

I'm actually not sure about MLB arbitration rules. Yes, it's true that 20% count can occur. However, I think that may only apply to contracts made outside of actual arbitration. I believe that when you submit offers to the arbitrator you must offer at least lasts years salary. And even if I'm incorrect, I know that in practice any kind of paycut (aside from a non-tender) is very rare.
So I'd hardly consider this a bug or a design flaw. |
