My take on the experienced GM threads
OK, I see many experienced GM threads. Been with OOTP since version.....blah blah blah. Looking for a good league. Well most of the good leagues don't have to look thru these experienced GM threads. Your best bet, if you are good, is to research. See who has been around for a long time. Scour thier forums, history, etc to see if they are an active league and one you may want to join. Check owners page to see the who's who and get references if you need em. There are a lot of ambitious commishes that start up leagues that last maybe a few seasons. But there are those who have been around for a 2 or more real time years now.
Ahh I am just rambling, time to shut up!

I know first hand that many experienced GM's do not have the good kind of experience.

Well as I am one of the people who posted a thread of this nature. I can at least speak for myself. Personally...I don't like sifting through all 30 pages of posts to maybe find a good league, especially when what I am looking for is pretty precise.
That's my take on the whole "experienced GM's looking for leagues thread complaint"

I probably shouldn't rag on everyone who posts those, but I feel a GM who seeks me out and gives me a solid application with more than the following:
"dude, you got an opening?" will probably catch my attention. Someone who puts effort is usually one who is a keeper. Even newbies can make good GMs. Ok, going to bed now, I wanna see this a top 100 post for next year! |

Yeah there is line, IMO, of someone who has played in OOTP online leagues before, and someone who has experience.
For me....I generally get recruited or referred to a league from outside this forum. If you have some experience...than you generally will have a number of people you've met and gotten to know. Those people are generally in other leagues as well. Alot of times when in opening opens up in one of their other leagues they look for people they know or feel will do a good job. After awhile, you can go to just about any league and see familar names of people you either know or know of. There are alot of leagues out there that last 2 seasons or less...being in a handful of those types really doesn't get you too much experience. I've been lucky in that the majority of leagues I've been in or have joined have been around for 7-15 seasons.....and were very stable...had a history...and most importanly...solid leadership complimented with a solid core of GM's. I think the best way to find a league you want to join....is waiting for the league to post that they have X amount of openings...and contacting them that way. For one reason, if you just post "Experienced GM looking for league", the first thought that pops into my head is that this person is perhaps too lazy to search and read through the leagues on the first page of the Online Forums. Lazy tendancies make me lean towards thinking lazy GM..which starts me thinking "potential" bad GM. Some of the most energetic GM's are the newbies...which can really make in impact. In a nutshell...if you are experienced....just let the league you are interested in know what leagues you are in or have been in....if you are a newbie....just be honest....and show your interest. |

It is more important for you to find a league that fits you than it is for a league to find you. I would always look for league I want into rather than getting asked. It is like buying a car: do you say I need a car make me some offers, or do you go after the car you really like.... Of course, just my .02$

Or in my case this time, I find myself with some more OOTP time available. I want to maybe try something different than what I usually play in, so I post something here, specifically looking for a certain kind of league. The kind of league that maybe the GMs I know from my historical leagues, may not play in (so no suggestions or offers)
Then what happens, a Commish from a solid longtime league sees I have free time and offers to let me have the next opening in his league. I then check and realize I know a lot of those guys, so sure, put me on the list. Wouldn't have happened if I hadn't posted on this forum. |

Oh well, if it bothers you that people would like to join a league, and you feel they are inexperienced because they do not fall into your criteria of an "experienced gm" then I guess I'm not. However, IMO, an experienced GM is one who wins consistently and has nothing to do with the fact that they are a good message board browser... Or...maybe they try to avoid the boards for fear of getting flamed.
