Game will not start

Whenever I try to open OOTP6, I get the 'program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down' message...I've tried using 6.00 and 6.11, rebooting before playing and not rebooting...it was working fine up until a week or two ago!

Does anyone know what I could do to remedy the situation?

What exactly did you do prior to this? Delete ANY leagues or files?

No, not at first. Not a thing had changed with my OOTP files or my computer.

Now I've uninstalled the game (through the Control Panel) a couple times, so that might have deleted the files...

In XP: Control Panel>Admin Tools>Services. Make sure LicCtrl is enabled.

Sorry, I'm using 98. Should have mentioned that earlier.

Okay, I've tried everything. I've tried deleting all my OOTP files. I've tried installing in a different directory. I've tried it with my web browser open and closed.

I ALSO cannot successfully unlicense the game, I don't know if that's related.

Any other possible solutions?

On Windows 98, the eLicense Control Panel is under Start -> Control Panels -> eLicense Control.

If you're comfortable digging into your registry, make sure the following Key exists:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices\LicCtrl

and make sure it's value is set to "runservice.exe".

That's the Win98 equivalent to Steve's earlier Control Panel post.

Also, not to be insulting, but be sure you're connected to the internet when you attempt to license/unlicense. Just having the web browser open doesn't mean you're actually connected. Sometimes, cached web pages can make you think you're connected when you're not.

How would I go about doing that?

(EDIT: Yes, I am connected to the Internet, 24/7, barring cable outages.)
