Installing Photos?? Please help

I downloaded JO 1900 MLB FacePack and am trying in vain to insert the photos into an all time league file. This is what I did, tell me what I did wrong please.

Copyed the photo into the Photo file in OOTP6
Renamed the photo p131.bmp to correspond to the number listed on players photo area (saying File not found: p131.bmp)

Enabled photo and there is the same messege with no photo.

Can anyone please tell me the proper way to install these photos?

Thank you much!

Did you copy the bmp photo files into the "Photos" folder within the .lg folder of the league?

If the photos had a .jpg extention, just renaming them to .bmp won't make a difference. You have to actually convert them...use BatchThumbs or Irfanview to do so...

I had assumed that these were already .bmp format, as they were made for this game. However, what technique would I use to check and see if they are?

In properties, it lists it as "Paint Shop Photo Album Picture"

Thanks

File types jpg and bmp are both picture-file formats ("Paint Shop Photo Album Picture" in your case). The player photos are most likely jpg format since this format saves space compared to bmp format, thereby making the download file smaller.

The file extension is what you need to look at... filename.extension... p1234.jpg or p1234.bmp for example. If the file extension is jpg you need to convert, not rename, the file to bmp format.

Isn't it great to have a community where you can quickly acquire that kind of pseudo tech support without being on hold for 48 minutes and pushing button selections only to find you have to call back tomorrow or will be charged $25.00 for the assistance? This is good place. I know because probably 500 of my 500+ posts were questions I was asking! Anyway, glad you got 'er working. Photos are a game-maker for me.

I did miss a retirement I should have been watching for last year though, now when I call him up he doesn't have the same picture he did for the 3 or 4 years I watched him. Now I'm going to have to go back through the messages and see if I can uncover the fix for that -- unfortunately I think it's preventive, not restorative. (shrug)

There are two ways to associate a photo with a player. One way is to name the photo file to the players number ID (p123 = p123.bmp). The other way is to name the photo file to the players name (Babe Ruth = babe_ruth.bmp, Jim Bagby Jr = Jim_Bagby Jr.bmp). If you name the photo to the players name you won't have a photo mismatched or missing when the player retires.

I'm sort of locked into the number system in a fictional league, am I not? Or if I wanted to convert, would it be a matter of just converting those "essential" players or does an option exist anywhere to make that change within the game system? In addition, if I do make a universal change, does it _stick_ with newly generated players?

I guess what I'm saying is I use numbers now....is there a going back in my situation?

no you are not locked in, you can change them anytime. you cant do it in-game that im aware of, but its just a matter of changing the filename to the player's name as described above.

As disposableheros said, you can change anytime from numbers to names and visa versa and even have a mix of both but there is no way in-game to do it.

Named photo files are easier in historical leagues because we already know the names of the past, present and future players but it can be done in fictional leagues. In the number method upon retirement the player gets a new number... so you've got manually rename the photo file to match the new number. In the name method when the player is generated you have to manually rename the photo file to match the name. Unfortunately, either way you've got some file renaming to do if you want the photo associated with the player "forever".

Do you select a photo for the generated player or do you use some utility that assigns/generates a photo?

I have rarely selected a photo for a player. I've let the game mechanics do all of that process for me. But now that I'm becoming more and more familiar with key players in the league and starting to implement Catobase at season's end, there arises the question of the impact of the engine's recycling of player photos.

If I'm reading everything correctly, it sounds like if I'm using the number system (which I am) then should I decide I want to forever associate a player with his photo, then I need to rename his photo file with his name file - Jim_Brumby.bmp and I don't have to wait until he's retired to do this because he will retire with his name associated with that nameID.bmp - Am I getting this?

Thanks for the assistance jdew. I'll start watching the keepers more closely now and react accordingly.
