Jason Keen's Managerial Dynasty (2005-beyond)

I am planning on having this dynasty be similar to Luis Rivera's awesome Pittsburgh Pirate dynasty. I have simulated the 2004 season and I will take over the team that I think needs to be rebuilt the most. I am using CBL's v 2.1 rosters and I am keeping everything the same. I am hoping to update it as much as possible, but with basketball and school starting next week again, I may only be able to update it on weekends. Oh and also, I am hoping for feedback from readers. THANKS!!

My philosophy as a GM...

I want to build my team a certain way. The three things I am going to look for in an offensive player are how much they get on base, their defense, and their batting average. In pitchers, I will look for mainly control and earned run average. Here is a layout of what I want at each position:

C-I want excellent defense here...offense is a bonus.
1B-This is one of the few positions where defense doesn't matter much to me...I want this position to have power and some pop in his bat.
2B-At this position I want to have good range and a good fielder. On offense, I want speed and the ability to get on base.
3B-This is a position where you need to have a good arm. This is another power hitting position and I also want good OBA.
SS-This is where I want my best "all around" player. This position is a range and fielding percentage position. I also want average and speed on "O".
LF-This position needs a good arm and good range. I want the left fielder to be a power hitter.
CF-Another on base average player and needs good range and good arm.
RF-This is where I would like to have another good arm. I also want this position to be a power hitter.

Meet the Tigers

This is the team I have taken over. Note:Some of these players won't be with me next March.

CATCHER

Ivan Rodriguez- He hit .324 and also hit 24 home runs with 83 runs batted in. Great catcher’s arm and excellent catcher’s range. Definitely the best player on this team. He is signed through 2007 for 7,000,000 a year.
Brandon Inge- Poor offensive numbers, but is a decent fielding catcher. I am planning on letting him walk and we will upgrade the backup catcher position.

INFIELD

1B Tag Bozied- At first base this season, we had a bunch of platoon players. In the minors we have a three star prospect; he will most likely be in the lineup next year.
2B Mark Grudzielanek- In FA, we will probably sign a veteran second baseman because at single a we have a five star prospect. Grudz will be let go.
3B Andy Fox- Hit .279 in limited action this year at third. He has filed for free agency in search of a winning team.
3B Danny Klassen- He hit .278 in limited action as a third baseman last year. I extended his contract cheaply for two years at $600,000.
3B Greg Norton- He hit .248 in 122 at bats last year. Next year he will come off the bench and he may play against right handed pitchers.
SS Omar Infante- Poor offensively, but a decent defensive short stop. In the future I always want this position to have very good range and defensive ratings.

OUTFIELD

LF Moises Alou- His contract was extended this season for three more years at $2,660,000. I don’t want to have that much money tied up in a washed up 38-year old. I will try this off season, to trade him away.
LF Johnny Gomes- Is thought of by my scouts as a solid prospect. I will offer him an extension during the upcoming season, If he doesn't accept he will be traded.
LF Rondell White- This will be my starting left fielder in 2005. He is poor offensively, but he will have to do for this one year. He may be traded at the deadline.
CF Jeff Devannon- I am going to let him go instead of offering him an extension. I will either trade or sign another center fielder.
RF Michael Restovich- 25 year old ‘blue-chip’ prospect according to my scouts. The first thing I did when I got here was offer him a two year extension and he signed it for $2,860,000. He is the future of this organization.

DH

DH Dimitri Young- He is definitely the best player on this team along with Rodriguez. He hit .338 with 26 home runs and 128 runs batted in this year. His age is getting up there at 31, but he has a few years of dominant ball left in him.

Starting Pitchers

SP Miguel Batista- Last season he was 13-11 with a 5.05 earned run average. He is an average pitcher and will be in our rotation next year.
SP Jeremy Bonderman- Is a 22 year old prospect and is the future of the starting pitching staff.
SP Josh Fogg- He was claimed of waivers last year and had an earned run average of 5.57.
SP Hideo Nomo- I am thinking about trading him away for a younger starting pitcher. We need to free up some money space and trading him will help.
SP Nate Robertson- I am going to let him into free agency this year and we will upgrade this position.

Bullpen

RP Matt Anderson- He had a bad year this year with an era of 6.36. We signed him for $500,000 for another two years to see if he had anything left.
RP Jason Kershner- He is going to test the free agent market this year. He is an up and coming set up man and will be a successful setup man on some team.
RP Chris Mears- He will be my middle reliever next year. This year he had an era of 4.42 in 22 appearances.
RP Felix Rodriguez- A great reliever. He is one of the best set up men in baseball right now.
RP Ugueth Urbina- A decent reliever who had a down year this year. We are going to let him go into free agency and we will search for a better reliever later on.
CL Fernando Rodney- One of the best young closers in baseball. He is going to be an all star closer in the future. We extended his contract for two years worth $2,260,000.

I have noticed a lot of smileys and you should put a space after the underlined word so it doesn't overlap. Anyway, good read so far. G'luck jay.

Free Agency: The Beginning . .

I am going to post the first five days of free agency here . . .

Day 1 : 1/28 Notable Signings

NONE

Day 2 : 1/29 Notable Signings

New York (N) : CF Carlos Beltran, 10,237,200, for 7 years.
-Looks at thought
New York
has finally shore up there center field problems. . . probably the ticket out of town for Mike Cameron.
Chicago (N) : P Matt Clement, 10,287,000 per year, for 4 years
-Last year Clement was traded away to lace>Pittsburghlace> for New York (N) : CF Carlos Beltran, 10,237,200, for 7 years.

Milwaukee: C Bengie Molina, 2,985,500 per year, for 4 years
-Molina is a great defensive catcher and will hit .250-.270 range which is a lot better than what the Brewer catchers have hit in the past.
Boston : C A.J. Pierzynski, 2,568,200 per year, for 3 years.
-Interesting, I wonder if this means that the Red Sox are trading away Jason Varitek?
TampaBay : SS Jose Hernandez, 1,368,000 per year, for 4 years.
Pittsburgh : 2B Tony Graffanino, 820,800 per year, for 4 years.
Cleveland : P Alan Embree, 2,836,300 per year, for 5 years.
Florida : C Dan Wilson, 477,300 per year, for 1 year.
Oakland : CF Jermaine Dye, 433,200 per year, for 2 years.
-Pretty good deal for a guy like Dye who could provide some pop of the bench.

Day 3 : 1/30 Notable Signings

Moises Alou was claimed off waivers by LA and signed.
-Thank god I got this contract off of my hands. I was happy that I didn’t have to release him outright.
Atlanta : SP Tomo Ohka. 10,503,500, for 6 years.
-I am thinking that this might be a little too much money for an above average starting pitcher.
Florida : P Kevin Millwood, 7,526,600 per year, for 5 years.>>
-Looks like Florida may be gearing up for another world series run? Florida’s rotation is really starting to look like one of the most dominant in the league.
San Diego : P Russ Ortiz, 6,582,300 per year, for 3 years.
-San Diego has a pretty good deal here, as they also have a decent rotation 1-5 now.
Texas : P John Smoltz, 5,869,300, for 3 years
-I don’t know why Texas is spending this much money on a closer when they should first be improving their rotation
New York (A) : 2B Placido Polanco, 3,329,400 per year, for 3 years.

Arizona : 1B Randall Simon, 2,713,200 per year, for 3 years.

TampaBay: 3B Russell Branyan, 2,599,000 per year, for 3 years.
Atlanta : 1B John Olerud, 1,017,000 per year, for 3 years.

Day 4 : 2/1 Notable Signings

Claimed SP Dewon Brazelton off of waivers and assigned him to AAA.
-Low risk claim for us. He could be a decent mop up pitcher in the future.
Claimed 3B Aaron Baldris off of waivers and assigned him to AAA.
-A bluechip prospect. He is a 3.5 star player and could have a very bright future in our orginization.
Claimed P Shea Douglass off of waivers and assigned him to AAA.
-He is an average middle relief prospect and will be good for us in the future.
San Francisco : P Wilson Alvarez, 6,462,000 per year, for 5 years.
-Wilson had a good comeback year last year but at 34 I don’t know how wise it was to sign him to a five year contract

Los Angeles : 3B Troy Glaus, 6,265,200 per year, for 3 years.
-With the loss of Adrian Beltre, they get a good offensive 3B to replace him but can he stay healthy?
Seattle : 3B Aramis Ramirez, 1,217,700 per year, for 4 years.
-If I had the money Ramirez would have been the first person on my list, but . . .
Oakland : DH Brad Fullmer, 3,013,200 per year, for 4 years.
Minnesota : P Paul Wilson, 996,400 per year, for 4 years.

Day 5 : 2/2 Notable Signings

Los Angeles : RF Richard Hidalgo, 7,558,300 per year, for 4 years.
-Seems like quite a bit of money for a washed up Outfielder.
Toronto : RF Ellis Burks, 971,800 per year, for 2 years.
San Francisco : RF Ricky Ledee, 870,100 per year, for 3 years.
Arizona : CF Tom Goodwin, 626,300 per year, for 4 years.
Boston : CF Chris Singleton, 638,400 per year, for 4 years.
New York (N) : C Gregg Zaun, 484,000 per year, for 2 years.
Pittsburgh : P Ryan Snare, 460,000 per year, for 3 years.
Minnesota : P Mickey Callaway, 1,242,600 per year, for 3 years.

Free Agency Continued . . .

2/3 Signings
ARI : P Glendon Rusch $5.26/5
-As a Brewer fan, I have no clue why they are paying that much to sign this guy.
MIN : P Woody Williams $3.12/3

SFG : C Michael Barrett $720K/3

ANA : 3B Chris Gomez $667K/5
NYM : 3B Jesse Garcia $788K/4
CLE : P Justin Speier $2.65/4

2/4 : Claimed MR Brian Bannister off waivers.
-Bannister is a decent relief prospect and will start the year at triple a and then probably will be called up around mid June. 3 star prospect.

2/4 : Claimed 1B Casey Blake off waivers.
-He will have a shot to start at first base this season and if he doesn't he will come off the bench. I see this as a low risk opportunity.

2/6 : Traded OF Rondell White, 1B Tagg Brozied, and 1,300,000 to St. Louis for MR Josh Axelson and SP Dennis Dove (prospect)
-In my first trade I get a rising middle relief star who is only 26. Dennis Dove is a low level starting pitcher prospect. St. Louis wanted me to pay half of White's contract and I agreed to.

2/6 Signings
BOS : 1B Doug Mientkiewicz $7.1/4
-Boston adresses its need in a first baseman very nicely by signing one of the best defensive first basemen on the market.

Free Agents . . . Yet again.

NYY : LF Frank Cattalanotto $2.85/4

2/11 Signings
CLE : 2B Alfonso Soriano $7.06/4

SDP : OF Brian Daubach $462K/3
BOS : P Sterling Hitchcock $1.73/3

Opening Day Rosters

vRH
1) SS Omar Infante
-This guy won't hit very well, but he has very good running instincts so for now, he is my lead off hitter.
2) CF Jeff Devanon
-I decided to offer him an extension since I had hardly any many to sign a free agent.
3) LF Johnny Gomes
-May be one of my best hitters along with Pudge and Dimitri. I am expecting big things out of him this year.
4) DH Dimitri Young
-A very good power hitter. He will have over 100 runs batted in this year.
5) C Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez
-Definitely the best player on this team. He will hit very well from the five spot and drive in a lot of runs.
6) 3B Aaron Baldris
-I am expecting big things out of this kid in the future at the hot corner.
7) 1B Garrett Atkins
-Would have been better off the bench but was my best first baseman so he got into the opening day lineup.
8) RF Michael Restovich
-I would like to improve this position in the future but Restovich's right field range and average home run skills found him in the opening day lineup.
9) 2B Josh Labandeira
-Very good contact hitting skills and will serve as a sort of "second lead off hitter".

Bench
C Brandon Inge
-Same thing with Devannon we had to resign this guys since we had no free agent money.
1B Casey Blake
-Will be a good bat off the bench and if Atkins struggles then Blake will fill in.
IF Danny Klassen
-Is a decent contact hitter to come of the bench.
OF Rene Reyes
-Will be a good bat off the bench and has very good defensive abilities in the outfield.

vLH
1) CF Jeff Davanon
2) SS Omar Infante
3) LF Johnny Gomes
4) C Ivan Rodriguez
5) DH Dimitri Young
6) 3B Aaron Baldris
7) RF Michael Restovich
8) 1B Casey Blake
9) 2B Josh Labandeira

Rotation
1) RH Miguel Batista
-Could be traded at the deadline this year until then, let's hope he regains 2003 form.
2) RH Hideo Nomo
-Is on the trading block right now. I am planning on trying everything to get rid of his contract without releasing him outright.
3) RH Jeremy Bonderman
-Is the future of our rotation. He could have a breakout year this year.
4) RH Josh Fogg
-Being a control freak that I am, I like this kid a lot and I think he could be a good bottom of the rotation starter in the future.
5) LH Nate Robertson
-Would be better off in the bullpen, but I am going to give him a chance at being a starter.

Bullpen
Spot : RH Juan Cruz
-Will most likely be in the rotation by the trading deadline.
MR : LH Jason Kerschner
-Will be good to come in before our setup guys against lefties.
MR : RH Chris Mears
-Another good reliever who has a bright future with us.
MR : RH Matt Anderson
-He is also our mopup guy.
SU : RH Felix Rodriguez
-Is probably the best pitcher on our staff, but if we are out of contention at the deadline he may be traded to a contending team becuase his contract takes up a lot of payroll and we have a number of relievers in AAA.
SU : RH Josh Axelson
-Will be the best pitcher on our staff in a year and is only 26.
CL : RH Fernando Rodney
-Excellent closer and could be an all star this year.

Prospects
2B Juan Delrio A
-He was our first round draft pick last year and is going to be one of the best 2B to play the game.
C Mark Reed A
-Will be a great catcher for us when Pudge's contract expires in 2007.
LF Johnny Gomes MLB
-Could be the cornerstone of this franchise and may have a breakout year this year.
3B Aaron Baldiris MLB
-Could be the future Hot Spot starter for Detroit. Excellent claim off waivers.
LF Curtis Gunderson AAA
-Another out field prospect . . . him or Gomes could be traded sometime in the future.
RF Wilton Reynolds AAA
-Another prospect in the out field. Will be on the roster sometime in July most likely.
MR Mike Bumatay AA
-Will be my future set up guy when Rodriguez leaves.
RF Dave Espinosa AA
-Yet ANOTHER right field prospect in our system. Him, Reynolds, or Gunderson could be traded this season.
SP Jon Connelly AA
-Excellent control describes this guy and he will definitely be in my rotation in the future.
1B Juan Tejado AA
-Could be the future at first base if Atkins doesn't work out.

Overall hitting as a whole is pretty good. We can't expect Omar Infante's run to continue so some guys like Labandeira, Gomes, Atkins, and Devanon have to step it up. Everything I expected out of Ivan Rodriguez is going well. Aaron Baldiris is hitting really well but I would like his power numbers to go up a little.

Pitching is a different story. We have struggled here mightily. Batista and Nomo are overachieving and my bullpen isn't as good as it should be. Fogg has really struggled and he is one bad start from being pulled from the rotation. Neil Robertson has done well so far but I don't know if we can expect that trend to continue.

Around the League
AL EAST : The Yankees continue to dominate the AL East and are 6 games ahead of Boston. Boston is 11-11 and is hitting .249 as a team. Pitching is another story. On the pitching side, they have a 2.49 earned run average! Tampa Bay is hitting really well as a team but the pitching is keeping them at an average 12-12 record. And in the cellar, Toronto and Baltimore can't do anything: Pitching or Hitting.

AL CENTRAL : The White Sox are the leaders this year in the Central. The pitching has a very bad era of 5.21 but they are hitting .305 as a team. Cleveland, who made a number of big moves this off season, is one game behind them. The addition of OF David Dellucci has proven to help them out a lot as he has an OPS of 1.095. All four teams in the Central are still in the race as Detroit who is in the cellar is only 5 games back.

AL WEST : Probably the best division in baseball has Texas leading with a 12-12 record. Seattle who is in last has an 11-12 record. That just shows how close of a race it will be this year in the west.

NL EAST : Philadelphia leads the east with a 15-8 record. Their pitching is the strength of their team with an era of 3.68. The hitting is an above average .270. Atlanta, Florida, and New York are all still in the race while Montreal is at the bottom of the east.

NL CENTRAL : The largest division in baseball consists of the Astros leading with a 16-7 record. The pitching is the best in the league with a 2.40 era. The hitting needs to step it up if they want to continue and is only hitting .242.

NL WEST : San Francisco has excellent pitching leading them to a NL best 16-6 record. San Diego, LA, and Arizona are all within 4 games still and that division looks to have a good race this year.

Awards

AL BOTM : NYY Jason Giambi
-Hit .330 with 25 runs batted in and a slugging percentage of .750

NL BOTM : LAD Shawn Green
-Hitting .341 with six home runs and 28 runs batted in.

AL POTM : BOS Pedro Martinez
-Had an oustounding .82 era and an even more oustounding record of 3-2!

NL POTM : CHC Mark Prior
-Has a 1.41 era and a 4-1 record. He has only walked 13 batters in 41.1 innings while striking out 52 batters.

May 2004

May 2004 : 13-13 (22-28) 6.5 GB Minnesota

5/26 : Traded P Josh Fogg to Houston for P Jason Hirsh (Prospect)
-Hersh is a single a prospect who is 23 and if he wants to make it to the majors he better start rising quickly. This was mostly just a trade to get rid of Fogg's salary and his high earned run average.

5/26 : Promoted P Franklyn German from AAA
-Will fill the mopup and middle relief role.

Hitting as a whole was decent. Gomes is quietly improving his average and I am hoping that in order to get his trade value up he will start hitting. He has decided that he wanted to play for a winner and that he was going to leave our team. Young continues to hit really well. At first base Blake and Atkins are just struggling mightily and we are searching the waiver wire for a first baseman.

Pitching is improving as the season goes along. Rodney had one bad outing where he gave up two runs and blew the save but other than that he had been unhittable. Batista leads the league in wins with 8 already on the year. Nomo and Roberston have to step it up. Cruz was entered into the rotation in the beginning of may and has had only one bad outing.

Around the League

AL EAST : New York continues to dominate here and are nine games ahead of Tampa for first. Bostonis two games under .500 and Pavano is struggling there. Baltimore and Toronto finds themselves in the cellar again and they are also the worst teams in the AL.

AL CENTRAL : The Sox have fallen to third and Minnesota and Cleveland are heating things up at a tie. Minnesota went from second to last to first by going 17-10 this month. Shannon Stewart hit .320 this month and Corey Koskie hit .330 to heat them up. Detroit isn't in last and are 2 games ahead of KC.

AL WEST : Oakland has gone from worst to first in the West and have a 28-21 record in the best division in baseball. The last place team, Texas, is only five games back still.

NL EAST : Atlanta, New York, and Philadelphia have been switching on and off all year in the first place spot. Florida is still in the race but may be fading fast. Montreal has the worst record in baseball with a 16-35 record.

NL CENTRAL : Houston has the best record in baseball 33-18. Pitt., Chicago, and St. Louis are all hanging in there and are within 7 games of Houston.

NL WEST : Los Angeles leads here with a 31-20 record. San Francisco is in a close second and has the wild card lead along with New York. Colorado and San Diego are in last place and are pretty much out of the race.

Awards

AL BOTM : TEX Hank Blalock
-He hit .440 with 4 home runs on the month and 19 runs batted in.

NL BOTM : NYM Adrian Beltre
-Hit .369 and 10 home runs with 26 runs batted in.

AL POTM : MIN Johan Santana

NL POTM : CHC Kerry Wood
