Don't you ever wonder....

...just how that one (or two, or many) special league will end some day?

I'm sitting here looking at the Baseball Maelstrom, and wondering under what circumstances this league will end. We're heading in to the 2012 season right now, and that league started with the 2001 season.

Shane and Shannon seem to have a blast running the league, and there's that core group of owners that absolutely love the league and have so much fun in it.

It just seems like nothing could bring it down. And I know the Maelstrom isn't the only league out there like this. It just seems like there's leagues that could go on forever, but you do wonder what's going to end them. The commish getting bored of running the league? Not having the funds anymore? Death?

Real-player leagues are doomed to end once they get too far from reality; this is unfortunate but seems to be a fact. Fictional leagues, certain of them, will probably continue as long as the OOTP franchise is still going.

But once they get too far from reality, aren't real-player leagues just fictional leagues with history?

Yes, but the people who originally joined the league did it for the real players. Unless you can successfully phase out the original owners with ones who like fictional leagues, there's usually going to be a problem. Most people I've encountered that join real-player leagues do not enjoy playing in fictional leagues, which is why they rarely last.

I'm one of the few still around who remember the big online draft that started off the Maelstrom (I took future NL MVP Carlos Delgado with my first pick after Legend Sandy Koufax). It's one of those few leagues I have been involved with where I've never worried that the league could just be gone overnight.
I hope the USBA owners feel the same about that league

I think it has more to do with the software then anything else... at least for the majoirty of leagues, I am still in a HH league and well it just is special because the software is really outdated... But eventually, a new better game will come out with more ease for a commish more in depth and so on... You take the bad with the good... for example, the hhasl the HH engine driven league, started the SSBL which is a sister league using ootp, so the owners stay together of sorts and the group lasts... how long only time will tell...

I've wondered the same thing about many of the leagues that I've been in as well. The only thing that seems to be a common factor in the demise of many top online leagues is a change in the free time available to run them or boredom. I'll admit that there have been times throughout the past 3 years that I have been bored with things, but that's one my co-commish will step up his activity. It's good that we can switch off like that. In any case, I can't think of anything that would make us quit running the league as long as we have owners that enjoy it as much as they do. And I can also say, as an owner of the USBA, that I have the same feelings about the staying power of that league as well.

16 team league now entering the 2018 season (our 17th)... 12 of the 16 owners have been there since the 2006 season, with 2008, 2011, 2013, and 2017 being the year of induction for the remaining four. There are still 7 original owners in the league, 8 if you count the original owner of one of the expansion franchises still being around.

(One expansion phase occurred in 2005 (well the teams were created in 2004 and given minor leaguers to manage, but their first year of operation was 2005))

That's what I think the issue is for most leagues. Either a bunch of owners move on to new baseball sims that make the old one obsolete or the commish does.

Not all leagues die, though. Believe it or not, there are still Earl Weaver Baseball leagues running that have been in existence for 17 years now!

The BTTF League started with OOTP3 and 2001 rosters. WE are now in season 2020 and have lost interest. BTTF2 will be a new league and I feel playing ahead ten years is enough. Many owners prefer real name players and playing 20 years into the future seems to make them drop out. Not enough of reality.

Diamond Kings Baseball is about to start it's 14th season including 2 "lost years". It is by far the best league I've ever been in, and the owners are simply amazing. 28 teams, with about 20 owners being there since the first couple of seasons, and most of the others having been there for a few seasons and having no signs of quitting. Tremendous commissioners, tremendous interest. Started with OOTP3 and is currently using OOTP5, and really its doubtful that we'll even move on because things are going so smooth. This league has been running for 3 or 4 years real time, and showing no signs of dieing. Hell, we even have a weekend yearly gathering. Truly amazing and unique league thats a hell of a lot of fun.
