The Canadian University Baseball Association

hey all

as previouly posted in the online league forum, I'm starting up a league that is based on the Canadian University sopts system, onyl for baseball. Since it never existed in real life, I though what a great idea for a league, and hence the CUBA(hmm...intresting) was borm.

With this, if anyone has any thoughs, comments, stadiums they'd lke to dedicate to the case (all teams are using AA #2 right now), i'd love to hear feedback. Anyone that went to these schools at any point in time (I know it wont be many but maybe some of our Canadian posters might have), if you'd like to be a player, please let me know and I'll add you when you're eligible for the draft.

I had to cut ten universities out because there's actually fifty in Canada, so for anyone that is, or was a student of oen of the ones that got cut, sorry

So let me know what you think, relevant feedback is always welcome, and next stop, the entry draft and some history

Rooting for UBC--that's where my favorite ex-girlfriend is going to grad school. (Better hope the wife never visits the forum!)

LOL for some reason that post made me laugh, and excellent. I was wondering if we'd get any fans for the Western uni's.

Seeing as I live in Hamilton, and most everyone I know went to Mac, I'll root for them.

Hey, you should use the Community Colleges as the farm teams. I'd love to see the AAA team Mohawk College Mountaineers.

Ya know that's a pretty good idea, although fidning a list fo them is a lot harder than fidning a uni list. I'll see what happens

Teams start out wiht only thirty players but I havent set that in stone yet. If I can find a list I'll look at increasing that but I doubt it'd do any good as players only have four years to "show their stuff"

A brief history of CUBA(the league, not the country)

In the 1910's baseball had become increasing popular in Canada in all areas. Canadian troops, getting some games in with their American counterparts during the First World War, would take the game back with them after the War was through. Never was the game received as enthusiastically then with youth, who looked for activities to do during the short summer months.

A group of university educators, looking to find a way to give prospective students a chance to attend their institutions but to also lighten the load on their tuition, and add some prestige to their school, looked to the formation of a league by the summer of 1918. They felt since the boys would be staying over the summer playing games, the revenue for tickets would pay for their schooling, and would help to attract new students of various talents to their school, both for work and play. And with that idea in mind, various representatives from forty of the top universities in the country would sign on to join the Canadian University Baseball Association in a meeting at the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa, within the shadow of the Canadian Parliament buildings.

The ground rules would be laid down as follows:
• The season would start on May 1st and would consist of 120 games, with the League Championship ending around the beginning of the school year in September. An All Star game would be played mid season, with the location alternating between divisions each year.
• No player younger than 17 and older than 23 may be allowed to participate.
• Players must be in good standing with their studies. Failure in their studies will mean suspension from the team until the issue is resolved.
• No trades will be processed. Students are here to study, with their extra-cirricular activities coming afterwards
• All ticket and concession revenue will be first paid to the student's tuition, and then be used by the university for educational purposes and upkeep of facilities.
• Any university, facility, or alumni found giving any compensation to players in the form of monies, gifts, or academic cheating or favorable treatment of any nature other than payment of that year's tuition will result in a permanent ban from the league.
• The standard rules for baseball would be used

And so, with the rules signed and the charter agreed upon, the first season would begin on May 1st, 1919.

On the side: I'm sure I’m forgetting something important, so look for these rules to possibly change in the future

So we've got the coaches all signed up and i've removed the names that probably would not exist in early 20th century Canada. Now all that needs to be don is the stadiums and replace the name file.

If anyone knows of a name file that has mostly European names with a heavy concentration of UK, Nothern and Eastern names in it, i'd really appriciate a link

I'll probably need those if I decide to complile a names list.

i looked at most fo the names and for the most part they seem to work. I just deleted the asian and mediterrian names like spanish and italian. I'm sure I missed some but i jsut subbed them for stuff depending on where they were playing (Quebec=french, east coast=irish/scot, west coast, slavic/ukraine/indian/whatever)

should be a fun time. once i gt some stadiums i'll start simming and doing soem writeups
