Braves offer Oakland a trade

Marcus Giles and Drew Meyer for Barry Zito

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/gammons/story?id=1922717

Quote:
... The first two teams to step up to Oakland seeking one of the Big Three are the Braves (offering second baseman Marcus Giles and left-handed pitcher Dan Meyer) and the Orioles (offering pitchers Erik Bedard and John Maine). A's GM Billy Beane will wait and take in offers from other teams.

it has beed said that he will not be an Athletic next year.

He pitched terrible last year, but i think Leo mazzone will make him into a cy young contender.

IMO, this is a great deal for the A's. They get one of the best #2 hitters in the game, and they will still have Mulder-Hudson-Harden-Blanton. (Redman might go to PIT for Jason Kendall)

because the American league has caught on to zito . makes sense to try to make a deal w/a N.L. team who have seen little of zito .Who im sure if he was to be traded to a n.l. team would return to form.

Its not that simple, they're all baseball players whether AL or NL, just look at Clemens who was in the AL forever but they never figured him out...

They better not trade Giles. As much as I wouldn't mind having Zito, there is no replacement for Giles.

My bet is this is nothing but a rumor. Beane won't trade any of the Big 3. There was this kind of speculation last winter and nothing happened.

Zito's name comes up because he was streaky last year and not his usual self. Hudson's name comes up because he is a free agent after 2005. The only name that doesn't come up much is Mulder - and he's the one I'd most like to see gone!

I'd welcome Giles if something did happen though; we could use some serious offensive help.

A Cy Young contender? He's already a Cy Young winner.

I like the Redman and Rhodes to Pittsburgh for Kendall a lot better than the Atlanta deal. I don't know who the heck would be the 5th starter though if both of them go. Blanton is 5th starter material, nothing better. I don't want to see him starting 30+ next year.

The speculation last winter was the A's would trade away one of the big three this winter.

As a Braves fan, I'd be pissed. Giles is awesome. Zito is troubled. Giles has some arbitration years left also...I hope he stays a Brave for a long time.

Having Zito would be nice. But Giles is one of the better NL second basemen and good second basemen are hard to find.

But Zito pitching under Leo would be an instant 30 win season

This may be the only way the Braves get a top of the line player though. They don't spend heavily through FA on any one player. They spread on their money on several different people.

As much as I'd like to see the Braves re-establish some pitching presence, I don't want to see Giles leave either. I'd almost rather them trade Andruw to get an upgrade in the rotation.

I doubt this trade will happen. If you ask me, I think Giles, a 25 year old stllar secondbaseman is worth more to the Braves then Zito would be.

Then why did JS offer this to Beane?

That is total speculaiton, Blanton might turn out to be really good, you cant know for sure. But I do agree that they should keep Zito...

No thanks...Kendall is dead weight with that fat contract of his...something like $30-35 million for the next three years. I know the A's are overpaying Rhodes, but he's much more movable than Kendall and I think less of a monetary gamble in the longrun. Redman has value and isn't making an obscene amount of money and they could do much worse for their fifth starter.

I really like the Braves deal. Zito has struggled and maybe a change of scenery is just what the doctor ordered. But, realistically, he or Mulder aren't going to be in Oakland in 2 years...why not deal when the stock is high?? Giles is a solid player that will fill a hole they've had for a while...and he's cheap. Throw in Meyer...who's no toss-in...and you've got yourself a pretty good deal.

Who takes Zito's spot in the rotation?? Well, plenty of capable guys on the farm in Blanton, Saaralos (??), Rheinecker and don't forget about Duch...definitely deserving of a shot after last season's performance.

The Braves' deal makes perfect sense...so much so that it's probably too good to be true!!

Overpaid yes, but dead weight? Certainly not. He has posted OBP's of .400 each of the last two seasons.
