OOTP crash with sounds on.
NOTE: To mods, I understand that this is a technical issue but I wanted this poll to be posted here in the OOTP6 *general* forum to get the best feedback.
Just wondering how many of you guys who play out their games (call it pitch by pitch, ect.) are having the game crash problem discussed here . This is the crash where if you have sounds on (while playing the game out like I described above) the game crashes or gives you that "OOTP has caused an error and needs to shut down" error. If so, please post your PC specs as follows; * Version of OOTP with what patch (i.e. OOTP6 patched to 6.11) * Operating System (i.e. Windows XP, Windows 98, ect) * Service Pack # for your OS (operating system, for example Win XP Pro SP2) * Sound Card * Video Card * Direct X version (i.e. 9.0c, 9.0b, 9.0a, ect) * HD (hard drive space *free*) * System Ram Now, there may be some of you who have gotten this to work with different configurations within the game itself such as the following (also disscused in another thread); * turning off animation (no cascading menus) * Using an external browser * using an inter browser * turning off interface sound Feel free to include this in your post. Lets hope we can finally get a fix with this info provided by us. Thanks for everyones support.

PC specs:
* Running OOTP6 version 6.11. Installed as the main installer. * Win XP Pro * SP2 * Video card - ATI Radeon 9800 (updated w/latest drivers) * Sound card - Audigy 2 Platinum (updated w/latest drivers) * 9.0c * 120gig HD with 98 free * 1gig of System memory Things I have noticed: * In the Game Configuration box located "wherever" you installed OOTP to, I noticed that on the top of the box, after its opened, that its says OOTP5. * Sometimes during the in game play calling, the sounds gets louder as if it (the volume) was just turned up a notch but yet I haven't touched anything. Almost sounded as if the sounds were looped/dubbed over. Possibilities: * Would converting the sound files over to MP3 make a difference? * Would converting the sound files over to WMA make a difference? I'll try both and come back with an update. I was just playing a game in OOTP 5...somewhat afraid to be disappointed by trying OOTP 6 (and, waiting until I finish my solo ootp5 season before converting over)...
and...I noticed that (and maybe its just my imagination) I sometimes make baserunning decisions (whether to try for home or 3rd or tag up or whatever) based on the sound of the bat hitting the ball. And, my instincts, when I feel that the sound has conveyed information to me one way or another, seem to almost always be correct. Well, I also read the text and synthesize the info of the text with the sound of the bat together in my imagination...and, with my experience with playing OOTP 5, I do find, at least I think I do, valuable information in the type of sound made by bat hitting ball. So, if I'm not just imagining that (and, experiences have given support to the notion that I'm not) then it would be a major bug and disappointment to me, indeed, were sound not available in OOTP 6...also, I just don't think it would be as easy to immerse myself in the game...the sound (there's just something about it that I've always found soothing) is probably the whole reason I ended up giving OOTP a 2nd and 3rd look and ultimately the factor in my exploring the game enough to find a way that it really 'worked' for me. So, to me, the sound is not just a perk or a superficial thing, but is, IMO, almost as major of a bug as one could have and so I do hope that attention is given to this and a patch is offered. |

Actually, I don't know. Tried it once I got the game, thought it was cool, noticed it slowed the game down a b i t and put it on the back shelf. Somewhere around the 6.0x patch starting noticing people posting about problems with XP (which I use). Been a little nervous now about trying it at all. So I don't.

I converted the sound files over from .wav to .mp3 & .wma and it doesn't work. So thats not an option.

2) I don't liken this to anything more than a keen-eyed manager creeping up to the high step and watching to see where the ball lands or is caught, deep into the field or shallow-but-clumsily-handled, etc.... and then signalling the base coach to make the call - or the base coach himself acting in a similar manner. 3) and the almost always correct is a good indicator of instinct over program 4) I play with sounds off, but there's still those voices in my head. OOTP 6.11
Windows XP Home Edition SP2 SoundMax Digital Audio 5.10 (onboard) Intel 82845G Graphics Controller (onboard) DX 9.0c 14.1 GB free 512MB DDR-SDRAM I've tried all of the different workarounds in the other threads, and while some seemed to have some initial effect, the only one that has fully and permanently stopped the crashed for me is the original: turning off in-game sound. |

With SP2 you get the latest version of windows media player. The problem lies with direct9.0 (most likely 9.0c). ....and I'm with NCBeachBum, I only can now play with sounds off during play by play or otherwise I get a crash. |

I crash when I have the sound on. I do have Windows XP but I have not installed SP2. I do have Directs X 9c so maybe like the previous post states that is the problem.
Also last month in one of the computer gaming magazines I receive they talked about how SP2 is not game friendly and a lot of games that people were able to play prior to installing SP2, don't work after the install and recommended not installing SP2 until Microsoft fixes the problem. A problem I also have when I have the sound on is that the game gets very sluggish...it doesn't respond quickly to my keystrokes. I haven't seen anyone else mention this. Does anyone else have this problem also? You know what they say, "misery likes company." |

I can now confirm that this is NOT a SP2 issue or a directx9.0c issue. I did a complete reformat (deleted partians, ect) today *again* and I installed just SP1 with directx9.0b and I still get the crashing issue, HOWEVER, it is not as much.
Steve, Markus needs to look as this a bit closer. This is not a SP2 issue. |

I've been saying since before 6.10 that it's not SP2. Glad people are finally hopping on board that bandwagon. :-/

Hey guys,
Im getting the same error right after playing out my game with sound on (processing other games). I've only seen this using the new patch. The game crashes when it is simulating the other games (after it generates your box score); yet when I start it back up everything is ok. Very odd indeed.............. |

Markus knows about the issue and as of yet has no solution.

Why are you using sound instead of listening to music? The sounds were about the most annoying thing I'd ever heard the one time I did turn them on.

This does not work. I have tried several "fixes". The problem lies within the game. There is a conflict somewhere. |
