Halofan Roster Problem
When I'm using halofan's opening day roster, there are always minor leaguers who are great. Take Matt Thornton on Seattle. He's a 5 star gold player and he has won 4 straight Cy Youngs in my league. Is there any reason for this, because I think that the other players are closer to reality than CBL's, and I would otherwise have no problems.

That's just the way the prospects were created...if you want them to be not as good, you'll have to edit them down yourself.

I know, but it's annoying having to go through every team and edit every good minor leaguer(every team has at least 5). Has anyone else had this problem, and can Halofan get it fixed, because it makes the league a lot less realistic.

the rookies are rated on talent. their actual ratings are not set up to have them as "studs" so if you are getting rookies that are monsters than the game is developing them that way. Now there are a handful, maybe 20-25 rookies that are set up based on what they did this season. Like Greene, Jason Bay. As for Thornton, he was rated off of his stats and when the stats were put in, it made him a 2.5 star SP so i really cant argue with that especially when the stats make his rating. I cant rate a player over 25 off talent so i have to use stats. But i really cant give anymore info because i dont know what "super players" you are referring to cause from the emails i get, the rookies that are great vary so much that it couldnt be a ratings thing but just the way the game developed them

Well, I can(almost) make a whole team of players that are great gold star players that are nobodys in real life:
C: Craig Ansman, 4 star 1B: Earl Snyder or Scott Seabol, both 3.5 star 2B: Kevin Witt, 3 star SS: Well, there's no SS 3B: Justin Leone, 3.5 star LF: Richard Branson, 4 star CF: No CF, either RF: Jesse Hoorelbeke, 4 star SP1: Matt Thornton, 5 star SP2: Chris Oxspring, 5 star SP3: Rigo Beltran, 4.5 star SP4: Bobby Madritsch, 4.5 star SP5: Rodrigo Rosario, 4.5 star MR1: Rodney Ormond, 5 star MR2: Talley Haines, 5 star MR3: Colter Bean, 4.5 star MR4: Joel Peralta, 4.5 star MR5: Jason Childers, 4.5 star CL: Steve Andrade, 5 star There's a lot more starters and relievers that are like this. Have you heard of any of these people in real life? Like I said, Matt Thornton is a dominant pitcher in my league. It messes up the reality and I would like it if you went back and fixed these. BTW, the game is not generating these players. These guys are there when I have done nothing after downloading your opening day roster set.

Ansman-was a top 10 prospect after he was drafted acording to Baseball America and some area acouts that i talked to. I also suggest you look at his stats. Most recently, 19 HR in 342 AB. Now i would like for someone to come up with his numbers in the major leagues. You cant cause he has a whole zero AB's there so no one knows what he would do in the majors so i had to use judgement and advice on what he could/would do in the majors. Now im looking at Snyder and Seabol in my roster set and i see a 2 star (snyder) and a 1.5 star (Seabol) and once again, i suggest you take a look at their stats with 2004 being WAY over what i rated them at so they should maybe be higher than a 1.5 or a 2. This is proof that the minute you start play in the game, the computer AI does what it wants with ratings Kevin Witt stumps me as i have him as a 1 star so im not seeing what you are. once again, proof that hte game did it and not me. The roster set that is on my site is the exact same thing that i have with the exception of managerial changes and awards. Leone is rated as a 2 star in MY set. I also would like it if you checked his stats for the last 6 years (last 5 preferred) and you may be surprised. I dont even HAVE a Richard Branson in my file so i cant explain him to you lol another mystery-I have Hoorelbeke as a 1.5 star 1b, not a RF as you have above so i cant help you there either Thornton (i have 2.5 star), Oxspring (2 star), Beltran (2 star), Madritsch (2.5 star), Rosario (1 star) Beltran is a laugh cause i have him in my set as a 2 star MR not a stud SP as you listed him. And check their stats, it would help. Ormond (2.5),Haines (3),Bean (2.5),Peralta (3.5),Childers (2.5),Andrade (2.5) Once again, check the stats. I keep saying to check the stats because that is how you make the star ratings so they are pretty important in making roster sets. I would like you to make a small roster set based off of written material like magazines or websites and not based off your opinion. There are a few players in my set that i would like to hammer because i dont feel they are that good. Perfect example is Jeff DaVanon of the Angels. He is a 3 star OF and i dont see him as anything more than a 1.5 star 4th OF but the stats make him a 3 and i made my set based off of that and not opinion. Take a look at Adam Dunn. Do you know how many people have told me that Dunn should be a 4-5 star player? Sorry i dont see it, i see him as a 3 star player with mediocre defense in OF and at 1b and he has no discipline at the plate with that cute SO total this season. However after putting the stats in, he is a 3.5 star player. Quote:

Thanks for answering my question. I might make a roster set, maybe not. Also, these stats are before I sim one day, so does that count as play?

just remember its not easy to keep opinions and attitudes out of building a roster set. It took everything i had to keep from hammering certain players and from not boosting players that i THOUGHT would be good

Also, I don't see why people would get roster sets that are updated to sometime in June. Isn't it the fun of the game to sim the whole season and get your own results? I just don't get updating the rosters midseason. And I do love halofan's rosters, other than the stud nonames. I think that they are a lot closer to reality than CBL's and produce closer numbers to the actual MLB.
P.S. Should I make a roster set that starts on Opening Day, or this offseason?

Beavers, so you are using halofan's Opening Day roster set? I'm not sure as I have not used them recently but I think that was his first version and he has tweaked the ratings for many players since. Maybe the later versions in addition to reflect roster moves, they are also more "accurate" concerning performance. Am I right halofan?

Yes, I am using opening day, but I have no intention of downloading any of the midseason updates. I will download the Nov. 2nd roster though.

I think your being rather rude and should make your own damn roster sets if you don't like other peoples.

when i get feedback on the sets it allows me to make them better for everyone else. I mean hell, i dont even use my own set cause i like fictional players in my solo league LOL. I have used it for tests and what not but nothing to run a dynasty with. My wife uses it tho. All i want is for people to understand WHY i have the players the way they are. I know everyone wont agree and its cool. I mean i hate a couple players that i would like to hammer in my set, but the stats wont let me ya know?

I would first of all like to thank Halofan for doing such a great job putting this roster set together. Sure, it is not perfect and I am sure there will never be a perfect roster set. One of the hardest things about the rosters is trying to determine the ratings for prospects. There are so many prospects that are Minor League superstars but just can't adapt to the Major Leagues. There also are some players that actually mature late and put up better stats in the Majors than they did in the Minors. The great thing about OOTP is that you can edit any player that you think is rated incorrectly.
P.S. here a the link to the Arizona Fall League if you want to check out how some of the top prospects are doing playing against each other. http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/ev...2004/index.jsp |
