"Simply Do Not Like Your Organization"

Does ANYTHING factor into that message when it comes to free agency other than random luck? Cause I've been one of the top teams in my online sim league, and every offseason, 90% of the good players don't like me.

It's random.

edit: To add to this. It's done on purpose to prevent you from overstocking your team with the best talent.

I hate the message. In my current solo league I have been in last place for 3 years, have a ton of cash to spend on FA and no one with more than 3 stars will sign with me.....except for MR. I have a team payroll of 29,000,000 and the next lowest is 47,000,000 with the high team at 102,000,000. I have a max cash of 20,000,000 but I generally have about 50-60,000,000 with my team net profit. It is being wasted each year because I can not sign anyone good. I have been able to get a few players for prospects and a ton of money (8-10,000,000) though...

Maybe you could start with combining some of that cash with a trade offer to acquire someone. I've found even with difficulty at Hard / Favor Prospects that with a solid veteran (or blue chipper) and a great deal of cash I can get a team to offer up some possibilities to make the deal work. Once that negotiation phase is reached, I reach in and look at the above and beyond what they're offering. Yeah, most of the time I'll get a that trade will hurt our team response, but now and then I'll get a taker with the right amount of green on the palm. It also pays to look into areas that do not show up as weaknesses on their team. It seems a correlation, and some common sense, that a star won't be put up if there's not a B-star to step up and replace him.

Not that I don't agree with you the Free Agent response is frustrating. I lost a good+ catcher my first year of taking over my dynasty because of that comment and I took it personally. I've started adding notes during gameplay whenever I face him and his new team referencing my new catcher's play vs his that day and when possible rubbing his virtual face in how easily he was replaced. Damn ol' Cedric if he let's me down later in the year.

I agree with the trade aspect - I've found the best way to make a trade work is to grease the palms of the poor teams and offer up half-decent players in their areas of weakness

It appears that all the messages that pertain to free agency and contract extensions are random.

I have seen "I want to play for a winner" as the message when trying to resign a player to a 1st place team (playing way over .500).

I have seen the "need more innings" or whatever said by pitchers who refuse to resign even though they have thrown more innings than anyone on the team.

Without proper reasoning (or what can appear as proper reasoning), the resigning/free agency comments section is very unprofessional and tacky. It's bush. (And if Kerry wins, do we have to then say, "it's kerry")?

I've not seen the 'winning' expression come up ever on a winning team.

One thing, just experienced in our league, is that players may complain about playing time after being used as a starter for an extended period of time. A player started off as a backup and was traded near the begining of May. He was a 4/5 Of then. He is now a full time starter. Overall: 2.45 PA/g; post-trade, 4.25 PA/g (a great owner in our league looked at it this way; thanks, Geoff).

It has been post-trade for about 3 months. The player complains about his playing time, even tuogh it is as high as can be. I'm not sure it is easy to code this differently without inviting cheating by "innovative" GMs, but this is one small oddity.

I doubt they are "random", though.

Kind of defeats the purpose of a salary cap.

That irritates me a lot. If nothing else, it should be linked to how often the guy has played in the past month or something.

Yes, that would be a good fix.

An easy workaround for "innovative" gms, would b e to start a player for a month, sign them, then put the back to their normal usage. But, that would be a clunky 'cheat' so unlikely.

You simply don't like MY organization!? I simply don't like YOUR salary demands! You hit .269 last season! TWO - SIX - NINE!!! Who are you to tell me who you will and will not negotiate with, Your Majesty! You can just rot in ... --- Sorry. Sorry, everyone. Free agency flashback. I've got myself under control now. Sorry. Back to your regularly scheduled posting ....

The thing is that could potentially be done in real life, too, if you think about it.

Though sometimes it may be random, I don't believe it always is. When I have a winning team, I've never seen a player refuse to sign due to wanting to be on a winning team.

Also with the "I don't like your organization", I've seen that with a winning team, but usually occurs with players that I'm already deep at so I figure the guy would rather go somewhere else to get playing time. But I also see it from players who I didn't re-sign the previous year. I have a last place team in an online league and due to being out of town for over a week, I couldn't re-sign a couple of my stars. In the FA Draft the next season, all the guys that were on my team no longer wanted to play on the team and I can't say I blame them since they didn't get any offers from me the previous season.

But whereas most of the time it works, there are other times I scratch my head. When you are trying to rebuild or on the verge of having a good team and have plenty of money to spend, most of the better players (pitchers especially) don't like your team. I've seen instances where I was one starter away from being a top team and yet none of the good pitchers were interested. I just write it off as them not wanting to go to a team that is not yet a proven winner, but it can still be frustrating.

Overall though, I like the way it is set up with maybe just a little tweaking neeeded.

That is true. I never thought of that.

A rolling 30 day window (or, something more complicate, like a year long view with the rolling 30 days given extra weight) would work well.

Another interesting scenario that could inspire, which I didn't think of, is this: Imagine a guy you started regularly for most of the year is disappointing you now, so you bench him. In the current system, he might already have gotten enough at bats that he won't complain about playing time. In a 30-day system, he will know what rate he is playing at now that he's been benched, which is more realistic.

Playing time complaints definitely need more work. I had a pitcher that complained after one month about not enough playing time (wouldn't listen to contract offers). After one third of the season had passed, I moved him into the starting rotation and he stayed there the rest of the year getting a start every fourth game. He finished with nearly 30 starts and yet still would not listen to contract offers giving the reason as not enough playing time. He didn't pitch well but I didn't want to lose him and lost him anyway. He went on to a productive career with another team who got him for next to nothing (in free agency bidding, he told me he wasn't interested in my organization).
