New OOTP User, Please Help

I looked at the FAQ, and didn't see anything.

I just downloaded OOTP6. When I opened it to pay and finish the setup, everything was fine. But when I finished payment, the window closed, so I went to open it. Except, it said there was an error. This is what is said:

Create Surface: BackBuffer

An Invalid parameter was passed to the returning function, or the object was not in a state that permitted the function to be called. This value is equal to the E_INVALIDARG standard COM return value.

Alright, so then I just clicked ok. Then it says:

Init App

Error InitDirectDraw.

Can someone help me? I just want to play the game.

give this a shot:

goto your OOTP directory, run Game Configuration & disable direct 3d.

One of the following should solve your problem:

Go into the “game”(OOTP, ITP, etc) folder and open the "game config" file, toggle the 3d setting, close those things and try the game again.

If that doesn't solve it, go to start then run and type dxdiag and hit enter. The direct X utility will open and it will let you know what version of direct X you are have installed. If it is less than v9 go to http://www.microsoft.com download and install v9, reboot your computer and then try the game again.

One of these two things should get things going. Please let me know if you are still having problems after trying both of these.

Alright, I did the second thing. I had been using 7.0, it's now 9.0

But it still doesn't work!

And I didn't see a game config file. Do I right click on the OOTP 6 icon on my desktop to reach it?

No. Go into Start, Programs, Out of the Park Developments (IIRC), OOTP6 and use the Game Configuration tool there.

Try re-installing it. That's what I did.

Alright, I figured out how to access the game config, toggled the 3D thing, and it works! Thanks so much steve and jazzrack.
