Why don't we start this topic now.
Here is what I want to see here. Player name What you think needs to be changed. Why, stats based not just I think he should be better. This can be speed related, defense related, or any kind of rating related. My only requests here are that you are making informed statements, not just because you like the player, and that you make sure that the information in the game is not jaded by scouts when you say it needs to be improved. Also please make sure you fully understand the ratings in the game prior to asking them to be changed, and that comment is not to be arrogant but until you have played around with the rosters as much as I have you may not fully understand what each little point will do to change a ratings point. I guess that is all for now. [ March 06, 2002: Message edited by: Rolen17 ]

Don't know if this will help you, but I took your roster set and modified it in the following way:
-Cleaned up baserunning ratings for a # of players (bonds etc). -Adjusted 30 IP star pitchers down, adjusted guys with bad seasons that are good players up (Griffey, hampton, etc) -Went thru top 100 prospects in baseball america and updated them in the league file to be more true to prospect reports. -Fixed a TON of fielding ratings on players. -Made many utility players better ranges (almost all were E range making them kinda useless as utility players). IF anyone is interested, email me at Aardwolfian@aol.com

My own opinion is that you've done enough work and if people aren't happy with the rosters they will make thier own changes.

Going from memory, so this may not be %100. But two things I noticed for the Jays:
Shannon Stewart Arm is rated, I think, a C. This is generous... he probably has the weakest arm in the league. Tom Wilson If I remember right, I think he's listed twice (once in AA, once on the big league roster) |

Funny thing is, I'd never heard of him before. Now he's the talk of Toronto after winning yesterday's spring training game with a suicide squeeze in the 10th. |

Rolen - I'm at school right now, so I don't have the ratings in front of me, but Wilton Guerrero's contact rating seems a bit off. He's a career .289 hitter that is regularly putting up .350+ in my league. I think this is due to the fact that he hit .338 in only 142 ABs last year.

Rolen, awesome set, here are some guys who I noticed that their ratings seemed a bit high:
Sean Wooten Anaheim- 7 in average had good number last year but very limited playing time. Miguel Batista Arizona - a career year Rolando Arrojo and John Burkett- Boston - 7 in ERA both had career years Wilton Guerrero- Reds 8 in average - is he that good a hitter? Mark Leiter Brewers 7 in ERA better then Mets ace and brother Al Leiter Randy Choate 7 in ERA - very limited playing time. Jeremy Fikac- Padres- 8 in ERA Bret Boone- 8 in Average (I know he had a good year last year but still..) Kerry Robinson- Cardinals 6 in Average Juan Moreno- Texas 7 in ERA |

While we're on this topic, how would the Range Factors on ESPN translate into OOTP ranges? Does a higher RF indicate better range? If so, what RF would you rate as a '5' in OOTP?

Can we make Mike Hampton better than a borderline #5 Starter?
In real life MLB, hes considered an "Ace" pitcher. In the roster set, Denny NEAGLE is rated better. |

In real life MLB, hes considered an "Ace" pitcher. In the roster set, Denny NEAGLE is rated better. Griffey an 8 in HRs? Barry Bonds A Speed, B Stealing ability? he stole like 13 bases last year. Freddy Garcia rated too low. This guy had a 3.05 ERA and wouldve won the AL Cy Young with a few more wins. A 6-6-7-6-5 seems a bit low. There are others... but just want to see "Star" players be stars, not scrubs. |

Rolen, first I want to preface by thanking you for the rosters. My question is about salaries;
do you edit them or do you keep what is there ? I say this because that's where I spend most of my time editing in a game; the salaries are way off all over the place. Id be glad to help provide the data if needed and do some of the grunt work as well. Other than that, I feel many of the players are fair, except the likes of Shwan Dunston rated as a very good player is generous (Im a Giants fan, see him play a lot), and making Jerome Williams higher rated (top 20 in BP and BA lists I think) thanks, Aadik

I think that, in the cases of Hampton, Griffey, and Bonds, these are examples of consistent stars taking a hit due to last years performance. In Bonds case though, the SP/ST ratings are likely based on his past SB numbers. In the case of guys like Freddy Garcia, there isn't enough historical stat data available to give him an 'accurate' set of ratings.

again, don't just complain about ratings, offer alternatives. How would you rate them? Maybe people will like your ratings better.

Whew!!!!!!! Finally people are seeing the reason I brought up ratings in the first place. Not because I think Rolen should alter his rosters to our every need but so we can discuss what changes we think should be made.

This is off the top of my head, and are all Orioles, since that's who I've been simming. I'll try to supply more detail when I get home tonight, and everyone - please aviod the 'all Oriole ratings should suck' jokes!
Sydney Ponson should have a 8 or 9 velocity (he regularly throws in the mid-90s) instead of 5. The 5 K rating is fine, though. John Stephens' velocity should be something like 1 or 2 (he's lucky to hit the mid-80s with his fastball). But his K rating should be 7 or 8 and his avoid walks should be 8 or 9. Don't know if this is a problem yet, but in simming almost 2 seasons none of the O's real-life '01 draftees (Bass, Fontenot, Chris Smith) have made it out of A ball yet, and Fontenot and Smith are struggling. Fontenot's scouting report says he'll never be anything special. Bass (a shortstop) outhit Rick Ankiel in the Appy League last year, and Smith and Fontenot were both picked in the first 17 picks of the draft. Sean Douglass, who may make the O's rotation in real life this year, is very wild in OOTP, and has been seriously struggling in AAA for two years. Baseball Prospectus lists him as having top 20-prospect "stuff." I'll check to see if his ratings might be a little off. Ed Rogers is 23, not 20 years old. His brother Omar is 21, not 18. Don't know if this was on purpose because he missed last year, or if it's based on his injury-plagued '00 season, but almost all of Scott Erickson's ratings are very mediocre. The computer manager puts him in AA ball. He'll probably be the O's opening day starter in real life. Jay Gibbons, a first baseman trying to adjust to playing left field, currently has an 'A' range in LF. It should realistically be a 'D'. [ March 06, 2002: Message edited by: CBL-Commish ]

Jason Kendall: Hits 5
Career average: 306, including last year (played with a torn thumb). Not including last year his career average is .314. I, personally, would use the .314, as i think it is more indicative of his abilities. This would give him a hits rating of 7 instead of 5. Thats all I can remember of the top of my head, other than adding Craig Wilson, who you left out completely. He played in 88 games for the bucs with 50 of them starts: 10 at catcher, 20 at 1B, 14 in RF. Batted .310/158AB/13HR. More details on the pirates site. Alos, Ryan Voglesong should be put on the DL for 20 weeks (september return- he's recovering from TJ surgery), Kris Benson should be on the DL with a return in 6 weeks (TJ also). Manzanillo needs to be moved from an FA to the pirates- we resigned him. Thats it until I can run the game and look at the roster. |

Taking a hint from CBL-Commish here, I'll take a look at the Reds tonight when I get out of school. I don't have OOTP in front of me, but by memory I can think of a few tweaks to suggest/debate.
BTW, Rolen or any other subscribers, how much is a subscription to BBAmerica? I used to go to the site all the time before it switched to a pay site, but didn't have the funds to sign up.
