Suggestions
For those familiar with other SI Games software, some of these suggestions may look familiar:
- Player roles: Do you consider the player a key player, a first-teamer, a platooner, a backup, insurance, a youngster, a hot prospect, a project? What do they consider themself? That can all affect the ability (and price) of a deal with the player. - Player morale - Are they happy? If so they play better. If not, they don't. Things like salary, team record, playing time will affect their morale. - Player requesting a trade. Self-explanatory. - Miscellaneous player actions, like skipping practice, missing the team bus, missing curfew, or going completely AWOL. - Player discipline for when they take actions like those mentioned above, or for getting ejected. Whether and how much you discipline a player can affect both player and team morale. - Practice regimen with activities that raise different stats. Create different training regimen out of those activities for Pitchers, Catchers, Infielders, Outfielders, etc. Assign players to those regimen. Assign Coaches to those regimen. - More coaches with different specialties: hitting, pitching, fielding, conditioning, etc. - List of coaches, scouts, trainers is locked but has a fair distribution of ratings. Hiring coaches away from other teams (subject to tampering rules). - Dealing with the media. Play up or down your team's chances. Respond to media/fan crys for a player to be benched/traded. Praise a player in the media. All of this can affect a players' morale, fan support, owner support. - Assign scouts to categories of "searches". Look for college players. Look for foreign players. Look for high school players. - Notes about players, with timers. Create a note, to arrive at the end of the season, saying that Player "x" is your main off-season target. - Compare players side-by-side with coach/scout assessment of which is better in different areas and overall. Nice ideas
But there is a small, loud, obnoxious group here that fights any notion that anything but stats determine a baseball player....one thing I hope that comes from the SI merger with OOTP is that stuff like this can affect players. I never see a talented player just flat out stink and have a 5 year career unless he is injured, when alot of players had demons or terrible work ethic and never made it

But as for me, I'm all for stuff like that. To borrow another sports video game company's slogan - "If it's in the game, it's in the game." I think sometimes guys should get upset if you try to trade them (i.e. Nomar), thus causing friction in the clubhouse until you actually do trade him. And there should be some Milton Bradleys and Frank Franciscos, and - dare I say - John Rockers! It'd also be cool to impliment some team rivalries (Boston/New York, St. Louis/Chicago, S.F./L.A., etc.) and have them affect the game as well. I could go on and on. |
