Droughning in RBs

DATELINE: December 5, 2004

BRONCOS DEFEAT CHARGERS 31-10
Denver runs wild over San Diego

SAN DIEGO - The Denver Broncos once again overcame a depleted running back core as Anthony Toney ran for 179 yards and 2 touchdowns and Jake Plummer completed 14 out of 23 passes for 189 yards and 2 scoring strikes.

Toney, 42, last played in the NFL in 1990 with the Philadelphia Eagles. He came out of retirement this week because Denver's running back core has been decimated by injuries. Quentin Griffin, Garrison Hearst, Tatum Bell, Reuben Droughns, Stacey Mack, Adrian Murrell, Brian Mitchell, Lawrence Phillips, Eric Metcalf and Joe Morris have all gone down to injury.

"Coach Shanahan called me up and asked me if I was ready to go," Toney said after the game. "I told him, 'I been waitin' 15 years for this (expletive) phone call.'"

Toney's best season was 1987, when he scored 5 TDs on 473 yards rushing and caught 39 passes for 341 yards and a score. He says he never got a fair shake in Philadelphia.

"C'mon dude, Michael Haddix? You got me splitting carries with Michael Haddix?" Toney said, referring to his Eagle days.

The way things have gone in Shanahan's offense, however, even Michael Haddix might have run for over 100 yards against San Diego, which fell to 3-9 with the loss. According to Denver running backs coach Bobby Turner, Toney was only signed after Shanahan decided that his 14-year old daughter couldn't afford to miss a previously scheduled soccer game in order to play running back for Denver.

"Toney did well," Shanahan said, noting that the former Oakland A's draft pick did suffer a slight ding in the second half. "If he's not ready to go next week we've put Jared (Fogle) on the practice squad."

Fogle, 26, is the star of Subway commercials. He once weighed more than 250 pounds.

Now you know the reason the Broncos traded Portis for Champ Bailey. You can plug just about any north/south runner into that offense and wind up with a pretty good ground attack.

Time wasn't exactly kind to Jared Fogle, either.
