Stupid Color Commentator Quote of the Week

This week's winner:

Fox Sports annoucer Darryl Johnston:

"I spoke with him [Joey Harrington] yesterday about the Eagles defense. He said they were unconventional. Well I've been watching them for the past two weeks and they aren't unconventional, they just do things differently."

before long, every single football commentator/announcer/anchor will be a former NFL player.

You won't have to produce any evidence of journalistic skill, you'll only have to produce proof that your bell's been rung a dozen times.

Commentators are stupid. That's why I usually watch all sporting contests on mute. No one knows what they are saying anymore.

Kind of reminds me of something a girlie student said in class the other day:

"We talked about it a lot, but we weren't very vocal."

The "Elite" title of this liberal arts college went out the window with that one.

Me: I don't like calling you late because I worry about waking people up.

Girlfriend: Well my dad's out of town on a fishing trip and my mom and brothers are asleep.

Me: ::shaking head:: Yes... being asleep is a requirement for being woken up.

I think she could be an NFL announcer based on that quote right there.

Speaking of commentators, Pat Summerall needs to be off the air ASAP.

Dang...and generally I consider Johnston to be a solid commentator, relatively speaking.

I think it's just the nature of the job. It's not like anyone got anything groundbreaking to say about these sports events. 99.999% of the time, it's the same thing over and over and over. Now these guys are paid to fill up the air time with words, how surprising it's often meaningless and sometimes silly.

Does it make me a bad person if I assumed that this thread was going to involve Joe Morgan?

Are you implying that Joe Morgan says stupid things?

Related aside: I wonder how a baseball conversation between Morgan and McCarver would go...

On second thought, I really hope that never ever happens.

The sad part is, they're still the cream of the crop as far as baseball color commentators go. Who would you rather listen to? Brantley? Sutcliffe? Ugh.

Joe Morgan and Tim McCarver are NOT the cream of the crop in the baseball world.

I'd rather listen to Steve Lyons, Bob Uecker, Bob Costas (and I dont like him either), Jerry Remy, Sean McDonough, Scott Karl, Rex Hudler and many more.

I'd prefer Ben Stein to Morgan and McCarver. Now THERE'S a (comparatively) scintillating conversationalist

I like Al Michaels a lot. Also, I have seen him interviewed numerous times and he alsways comes off intelligent. Anyone else agree?

Sorry, let me make that a little more specific. Out of the people who currently do color commentary (not play by play) for national broadcasts of baseball games (which knocks out everyone on your list), who would you rather hear than McCarver or Morgan?

Tonight Vin Scully said the moon looked like a hole in the sky. I think he may be a wee bit past his broadcasting prime.
