Gold Stars vs. Actual Stats

Please do not discuss blue stars...this is only about gold star players.

I have read and reread all of the posts about stars. There is alot of helpful info out there from everyone. I understand about the relativistic nature of the number of stars a player will receive based on a comparison of other players at that position.

BUT WHY do I have 1 star starting pitchers with a 3.50 ERA that is lower than the 4 star starter with 7.50 ERA?!?!? By definition of how stars ratings work shouldn't the lower ERA rank him better when compared to other SP's???

The stars are set according to your AI Evaluation percentages under League Setup. If your current year stats percentages is low (which is good, because the game works better that way, IMO), then the ERA discrepancy won't make a big difference.

I think I know what you're getting at. I have definitely had one star players - particularly pitchers - who performed consistently well throughout their careers and four star guys who just never did a whole lot. Sometimes it makes me wonder if the star rating for pitchers is really very well calculated.

I have wondered that, too. Especially with OOTP6, the gold stars are not as good a predictor for pitchers as for hitters.

I stopped using stars because of this. I think the computer doesn't know what its talking about sometimes. Like when I go to the trade screen and it tells me that I need a starting catcher and the catcher I have for the last two years has an OBP of 400, and HR's totalling 30 to 35 a year.

I've got two relievers on my LBA team with virtually identical ratings down the line. One is a 4.5-star pitcher, the other 2.5 stars.

I just figure that, as in real life, there's a lot of "Fog of War" built into the game.

Ignore the stars. They are useless.

Yeah, that's what I would have said if I'd thought of it

Yeah, Tommy Greene is a 3.5 star SP for my '93 Phillies with great ratings, but has an ERA of almost 7.00 through the end of May and walks a ton with a control rating over 60. He was 16-4 that year. Curt Schilling was rated even higher (4 or 4.5 stars) and doing just as bad, but he's turned it around over the last 3 starts and now has the ERA in the mid 4's. Meanwhile, the #5 starter, Ben Rivera (1 star), had a sub-3.00 ERA until last night when he got tagged for 8 runs in 2.1 innings. So, you really never know what's going to happen with pitchers. Hitters are more predictable, or should I say "consistent".

Yeah, this is exactly it! It doesn't make sense.

BTW - sorry to hear about the pitching staff from such a great team but is Tommy at least knocking them out of the park?

I'm still in first place by 1 game over the Cubs. Mulholland has been very solid (2.82 ERA) and I traded Mitch Williams for a very young Trevor Hoffman who is now leading the league in Saves minus all the control problems. I can't remember what Greene is hitting, but I do know he has a contact rating of 36. He may have hit one out of the park so far. He literally has been yanked in the 3rd inning the last 3 or 4 games, so he's had all but 4 at-bats in the last month.

Stars are only good IMO as a quick and dirty evaluation of players. I would never make a decision based solely on them.
