Java based Stats Manager for OOTP6
Announcing: Java Based Stats Manager for OOTP6
Coming Soon!!! You're familiar with CatoBase and BOSI? Then you'll love this new Java based add-on utility for Out of the Park Baseball (OOTP) 6. We haven't officially named the project yet, but here's what's coming: An OOTP statistical interface framework written entirely in Java, made available as Open Source, and available in the following configurations: For Leagues A polished, yet fully configurable, web-based league management application, the ideal stat management solution for online leagues. Many of the features here will be similar to what can be found in BOSI. For Solo Players A stand-alone application for viewing, reporting, and managing all your stats, perfect for the solo player. This gives you all the power of the web application, without having to run any server software on your PC. For Developers A powerful and fully open framework for creating your own league utilities and add-ons. More Benefits The web application can be run on your own server, or hosting for a small fee will be available also, similar to what BOSI offers. Supported by open source community. Complete access to source code available to all. You have the ability to contribute directly to the project to improve or change it in future releases. If you have Java development experience, and you would like to join the team of open source developers working on this project, or just hear more about it, please contact me: Timothy Fisher, trfishermi@yahoo.com |

Sounds awesome. Will this utility keep track of stats as indepth as BOSI and/or Catobase? Also will this keep stats for every season played in your leagues history? Thanks.

Yes, in terms of the stats it keeps track of, it should be comparable to CatoBase and BOSI.
Right now its still in development, so if you have any specific requests or suggestions, I'm very open to input. Another note, it will use the CVS Exporter tool to generate its input files, just as CatoBase and BOSI do. Tim |

Being a JAVA developer by day and php hacker by night, I was wondering what environment your planning to use? Servlet based, Applets.
Supporting a Java web environment is a harder find then one for PHP. I seriously considered do just what you are trying to do. Especially since I love open source. See OOTP-ANT script post. But the problem I saw was that if you write it as a servlet there really is no good way to support that environment in a cost effective way. 2) Write it as a applet .. well I don't like applets so I did not even consider that. I have been working, when able to, on things to add to BOSI.. I am calling them commishtools. Just getting started on that venture. My plan here is to bring together the coding community and host php scripts that folks want to share. Check out commishtools.ootp.us. Of course depend on your ideas I might jump ships but again. Most hosters(ISP) do not support JAVA Application. I am seriously considering a CATO based History utility that is not just static files but smaller and dynamically built. But that is a tough task too. Thanks,

The web application portion of the Java framework will most definitely be servlet-based. I wouldn't even consider writing this as a Java applet. There are way too many limitations with applets to really make that feasible. But the framework will support much more than the web application front-end. There is also a desktop client that doesn't require any server hosting period, and there is also a developer API that will be available. As a server-side language, Java is much more powerful that PHP and thus I feel that I'll be able to do some unique things with this project.
Your right in that not all web hosting services support Java today, and yes its almost impossible to find free hosting that supports Java. But, there are low cost Java hosting services available, last I checked for as low as $5.95/month. For a free Java based server host, check out myjavaserver.com. Personally, I don't have a problem with access to Java hosting, but I do recognize that Java hosting is not as widely available for example as PHP supported hosting. For that reason, I plan on offering a hosted version of the web app, much like what is available for BOSI. Users can also host the java web app using the open source Tomcat server, on their own box at no cost. I checked out your site, thats pretty cool too. I like your ANT based project. I am a big fan/user of ANT also. If you decide you want to contribute to my project, let me know. I'll be getting a project web site up very soon also. Tim |

Tim,
Will/could your app have an expansion draft module? |

My plan is to release functionality incrementally, so that it won't take forever to get a first release out that tries to accomplish everything. Yes, expansion draft module is on my list of ideas, but I don't anticipate having that completed for what I would call a first release. The addition of more features like these though could accelerate if I get additional developers working with me. This is precisely why I want to release this as open source, so that the community can get involved in the development and we can make this a utility that has all of our favorite and desired features. Progress of java project
What is the progress of the java project? I am very interested in web page design but am quite a novice. Looking forward to something not as complicated as catos util.

Ease of use is one of the goals of the project, so hopefully we'll meet your desire for a less complicated tool. The project is being hosted on SourceForge. For those not familiar with SourceForge, it is an open source community, hosting thousands of open source projects. That is where you will be able to follow the progress of the project. When I have more details, I'll post a message. Tim |
