Barry Bonds Eat Your Heart Out, Pitchers Don't Walk This Guy...

Wow..A guy in my fictional league just had an absolute MONSTER season. He hit .311/.395/.753 with 80 homers and 191 RBI's. 51 homers on the road!! (only 29 at home; righty at Fenway). His previous career high was 68, with one season of 62. He hit 30 more homers than the 2nd place guy, despite the fact that I changed my homers in league totals to 7015 in 167000 AB's (which should have really lowered homers). Time to institute steroid testing

Anyone else seen any computer generated freaks that are just heads and shoulders above anyone else?

There's one guy in my current league who is putting up the kind of numbers I've never seen before. My league isn't a HUGE offensive league. Before he came along, I think the record for homeruns in a season was around 60-65. I think in the 20 year history of the league, only 1 or 2 guys ever hit 60 and only a half dozen more hit 50 or more. The career record for homeruns is 633. Then along comes Louis Graver.

His first four seasons are uneventful. He came up right away as a 20 year old and didn't do too much. In his fourth season, he hit 30 homers for the first time. After that, he just exploded. For 8 straight seasons he hit more than 60 homers (yes, 8 straight 60+ hr seasons) and completely obliterated the single season homerun record, smashing an astonishing 83 homers. He's won 6 of the last 8 MVP awards and at age 32, already has 733 career homers. If he plays until he's 40, there's a very real possibility he'll hit 1000 career homers.

The amazing thing is his ratings aren't the best I've ever seen. His HR and eye/patience are maxed out (100 out of 100), but his contact is only 77. I've seen guys with the exact same HR and eye/patience rating, but with 90 or more for contact and not even come close to the numbers he's put up. When all's said and done, his numbers will be very near impossible to ever break.

As for pitchers, I've also had one guy who was head and shoulders above anyone in the history of the league. Juan Gayle. He's retired now and in the HoF, but holds the record for career wins (424), career strikeouts (5784), career ERA (2.61) and Cy Young awards (13 total, including 11 in a row). He's over 100 career wins higher than the next guy, about 1000 career strikeouts ahead of the nearest guy, and 8 more Cy Youngs than the nearest guy. He's a personal favorite of mine as well, because he was my one big FA signing. My team was starting to dominate the regular season, but always fell short in the playoffs, so I figured enough is enough and decided to go out and get him. He spent 5 seasons with me and I won 3 World Series titles, and finished first in the league all 5 times. He also won the Cy Young 4 out of the 5 years (with the one year he missed out, my #2 starter won it).

Well, this guy currently has 4 straight 60 HR seasons, 2 50 HR years before that, and 2 40 HR years before that. 498 homers at the age of 31, all while playing at Fenway park (92 in HR's for righties). I'm guessing my guy and yours probably have their homer ratings above 120, probably around 140 or so (can't check because I'm in manager mode though).

You wanna know sick? I'll tell you sick.

In my league, I started from 1901, in a historicaL league. Flash forward to 1939, when the world awoke to Jimmie Foxx.

The preiovus records for HR, Runs, and RBI was 58, 174, and 188, respectively. In 1939, Foxx led my Reds to the single greatest offensive season of any team, ever. I scored 1587 runs in 154 games; more than 10 per game.

Foxx was insane. He hit .398, with 110, yes, 110, home runs. He had 227 Runs, and 257 RBI. He is still the only player to ever hit more than 70 HR in a season (it's now 1949), and he retired with 1002 HR. The next best HR hitter is Lou Gehrig, who hit 724.

And yes, I won the world series.

But no, he is not the best player in the league. Not even close. There is a pitcher on the Reds (got there after I left, as I now manage the Pirates) named "Snowball" Orwell. I gave him the nickname after I saw his last name. By age 21, his ratings were 98-99-100. Absolutely nuts. He is the only player in league history to win 40 games in a season, strike out 350, 400, 450, or 500. He's only 33, and he has 478 career wins against only 39 losses. I think his creation might be an error in the game, since no one is ever, EVER that good.

In the second year of my 1931 league, Gehrig hit 72 homers. Unfortunately, I don't have a record of it anymore and don't know what he would have finished with in the 3rd year because my league went KA-BOOM!!! Read "missing player" post for details.

I saw Russ Branyan on the waiver wire, so I happened to check out his minor league numbers (he had no Majors stats) and he had 92 HR and 210 RBI in AAA.

Don't RBIs flip over at 255? So did it say he had 2 at the end of the season or something?

Just decided to check Graver's ratings with the editor. They are, in fact, 133 for power. So I guess that explains his extra bit of "umph" that other guys rated 100 don't have.

Foxx did end the season with 1 RBI. It as very frustrating, since he didn't win the MVP and his win shares were hurt because of it. But, I will know. That's all that matters.
