If only I hadn't played with the nose candy: Darryl Strawberry replay
Darryl Strawberry was sitting on his sofa in his living room. Trying to watch the 3 A.M. replay of the Yankees-Red Sox game on ESPN, but he couldn't resist...
He had to watch the Girls Gone Wild infomercial on Comedy Central. "Yeah baby, let me see those boobies..." All the lights went out. Green smoke rose out of the ground. And a ghost in chains came out of the carpet. In a booming voice he said, "Darryl, you fool! You had all the talent in the world, how dare you blow it on drugs!" "Huh?" Darryl said. "Who the hell are yo-" The ghost pulled Darryl's arms and began to fly in the air. " Look at you Darryl! You look like a fool, the only time you should of been wearing orange is if you played with the Mets or the Orioles! You broke all 6 of your fans hearts! "Hey Man, I don't need this! I know I messed up!" I should of hit 500 homers but I...wasted...it...all" Darryl cried like a little girl for 5 minutes. "I'm giving you a 2nd chance Darryl to use your talent to the fullest"The ghost said. And that's when Darryl passed out. When he woke up, he sighed, " It was all just a dream " But when his radio alarm clock played Kurtis Blow's "Basketball" he knew it just might not be a dream. He jumped out of bed and ran through his old apartment he lived in and looked on the calendar It was April 1st 1983. OPENING DAY! And he was in the lineup. So basically I'm replaying Darryl Strawberry's carrer. Here we go

With an aging Tom Seaver and Mike Torrez, 10 years ago this staff would of been untouchable. But getting old is a bummer.
Along with a old Rusty Staub and a sore in the knees Ron Hodges, the 1983 Mets needed an infusion of youth into their lineup. Ladies and Gentleman meet Darryl Strawberry Strawberry's 1983 rookie campaign next

Darryl was kind of mediocre in his first month with .247 3HR 11RBI's
The ghost wasn't happy with Darryl. Are you blowing it again Darryl? "N-n-no, I'm trying, it's just I'm getting used to my old rookie swing." "That better be the reason Darryl, because if you blow this, I won't give anyone a 2nd chance except for Minnie Minoso" "NO!!!!!!!" Darryl screamed. The Mets in the midst of a 5-game losing streak, are now 9-16 and in last place in the NL East. League Notes: Pedro Guerrero is off to an unbeliveable start. With a .396 12HR 24RBI line. When Darryl read that paper, he knew he had something to live up to, because Darryl knows a good line when he sees one. ![]() Strawberry's "line" 25G 85AB 21H 62B 13B 3HR 11RBI 15R 14BB 30K's 2SB 1CS .247AVG .354OBP .447SLG .801OPS

Shoot, do Pete Rose and his gambling addiction.
Do Steve Howe...he snorted more coke than any THREE other baseball players. Lots of drunks, too. Mickey Mantle. |

Hmmm... Well I don't know how much better of a career Rose could have, but Mantle and Howe are really good ones, and wasn't Orlando Cepeda a big druggie? Oh! and of case you didn't know this, i've done this before. But I blew it and it sucked. Here it is in case you want to look at it 1st Strawberry career replay

Well this sucks, Darryl broke is hand and is now out for 7 weeks. He got hurt on 5/29. At the time he was having a homer streak. His new updated stats are: .253 9HR 27RBI
Darryl was sleeping on his "new" king-size bed when he jumped up in fright. "Darryl, You are blowing it more than the first time, WHY?!?!?!?!" "I-I-I-I Didn't mean to break my hand I just slid into 3rd wrong, and It just broke." What! You broke your hand, I was just talking about your sub-par average, and striking out so much, you are really blowing it now Darryl "Oops" Darryl said. League notes: Andre Dawson is El Caliente, now if he was Mexican this would be funny. But he is hot he is hitting .363 15HR 50RBI through May 31st. And this just in: The Mets still suck and are still in last place. Here Met fans are flocking across town to see the Yankees, who despite popular belief in Flushing do not suck (34-20) 1st in the AL East! Oh by the way all of the Mets fans are Asian Strawberry's "line" G 52 AB 166 H 42 2B 8 3B 1 HR 9 RBI 27 R 27 BB 22 K 56 AVG .253 OBP .347 SLG .476 OPS.476 A month of an injured Strawberry next:

Gah! Strawberry traded to the Great White North!
Yep Darryl got traded to the Blue Jays for Dave Geisel a 5* closer who already had 20 saves. I simmed through the month where Darryl is on the DL. And he hit very well on his return from the DL, hitting .318 3HR 9RBI after being returing from injury. One good thing about Darryl being traded is he went from 25 games back in the NL East to 1 game back in the AL East. "NO! You were supposed to play for a sucky team, why did they trade you to a contending team! The ghost said. "I'd rather play in New York though, 25 games back or not." You fool! You don't think you can handle the pressure do you? Darryl stood up and put out his chest, "Of course I can handle the pressure. I'm a man!" "Yeah Sure"The Ghost replied. My own thoughts of this trade: This sucks big time, not only is it a dumb trade but, now I can no longer put in pictures of Strawberry, since he never played with the Blue Jays. Does anyone know how to photoshop very well? League Notes: All or nothing: Mike Schmidt goes up to the plate with one thing on his mind, hitting homers. With a .223 average and 33homers hits a long-ball or nothing approach. One thing that does help his poor average is his excellent eye. He has a .401 OBP to go along with it. Schmidt awaiting the pitch so he can swing as hard as he canStrawberry's new and improved line: Games 59 AB 188 H 49 2B 9 3B 1 HR 12 RBI 36 R 32 BB 27 K 62 AVG .261 OBP .358 SLG .511 OPS .868 Darryl's Next Month coming up later

Darryl floated in mediocrity for all of August not being able to hit one homer in August.
"You were made to hit homers Darryl, why aren't you hitting homers? The Ghost boomed "I just am going through a slump, that's all" Darryl replied. "Remember Darryl, if you fail, I'm never giving anyone a chance again. And if you don't 500 homers I will consider that failing!" "Don't worry, I'll get it done." Darryl said. "You better Darryl, You better League Notes: Still Kicking: John Lowenstein the 36-year old outfielder is leading the majors in avg. by hitting at a .376 clip. He is also throwing in 24homers and 88RBI's The Blue Jays are now 10.5 games back in the NL East and in 3rd, the Yankees are playing out of their minds. Darryl's "line" Games 71 AB 224 H 57 2B 11 3B 1 RBI 12 RBI 39 R 37 BB 30 K 73 AVG .254 OBP .345 SLG .473 OPS .818 Darryl will try to finish up his rookie campaign on a high note in the next post:

Darryl finished off the season with a .241 17HR 54RBI season
"You did better your first time around Darryl, At this pace you probably won't break 300" "I'm still young just give me a chance" Darryl replied. Darryl really slumped the last 2 months of the season. Hitting .222 in August and hitting .209 in Sept./Oct. He was a good pinch hitter though, connecting for .364 1HR 4RBI Strawberry's "line" Games 99 AB 315 H 76 2B 16 3B 1 HR 17 RBI 54 R 52 BB 43 K 105 AVG .241 OBP .331 SLG .460 OPS .795 SB 4 CS 3 League Notes: The Dodgers won the world series in an upset over the Yankees 4-2. Toronto makes really stupid moves this offseason
By giving a 41-year old a 3-year contract you might be putting yourself in the way of ridicule, but by signing one that had an ERA over 4. You may just be plain stupid. The Blue Jays gave 41-year old Ron Reed a 3-year contract with 1.3 million a year. To add to the Blue Jays stupidity, they signed 36-year old outfielder Jose Cruz to a 4-year deal worth more than 8 mil a year. Cruz did hit .326 but that being a career high, is not a good sign for the future. He also lost some of his power last season with only 5 homers. Cruz with a single back in MayThe "Kid" from Texas looks like a good one Roger Clemens was taken 1st overall by the New York Mets during last Saturday's Free Agent Draft. With a 95 MPH fastball and a Splitter that drops off the table, Clemens could anchor this Mets staff for years to come. Clemens at a press conference Lynn joins Foster in New York to make a potent outfield Fred Lynn, considered the best hitter on the free agent market by many this season, said the desicion came down to a chance to win. " I know the Mets are willing to spend money, and while I'm here, I'm sure we will get the pieces to fit the puzzle. Lynn signed a 5-year contract worth 13.5 million a year. Lynn during Spring Training last yearSalary Cap Needed? Many a baseball fan are crying for a salary cap. Those fans that aren't Yankee fans that is. When the Yankees signed Rick Stutcliffe to a 4-year contract that equaled almost 7 million a year to pitch long relief, fans and sportswriters alike both called for the Yankees' brass' heads. " It's not fair that they can take players like Stutcliffe just because another team wants him." said a Red Sox employee, who offered Stutcliffe 5 million a year and a guarenteed spot in the rotation. Stutcliffe seen here with the Dodgers, became the highest paid long reliever this offseason "Man there's a lot of stuff going on this year." Darryl said, as he put the paper down. " Don't look at the paper, worry about yourself Darryl. Quit reading the paper or I can make it where your last name is Kiwi. How would you like that Darryl Kiwi? "Okay, I'll quit reading the paper." Opening day 1984 Next:

Darryl might have an achilles heel. He can't hit lefties. At all. With a .107 average against southpaws Darryl is in trouble. He is hitting .306 against righties with all 6 of his homers. He's off to a .244 6HR 26RBI's start.
"Why can't you hit Lefties Darryl? Are you screwing up?" "NO, of course not, I just can't see the ball very well right now." "Do you need a pair of glasses? Darryl? Would that help?" Darryl just walked away. League Notes: Making his country proud: Bert Blyleven who is from Zeist, Holland. Is off to a fantastic month. Going 4-1 with a 1.61 ERA with a .186 OBA. Blyleven was 10-18 with a 3.95 ERA. Darryl's "Line" Games 25 AB 90 H 22 2B 5 3B 3 HR 6 RBI 26 R 18 BB 16 K 27 AVG .244 OBP .358 SLG .567 OPS .924 Darryl's May next:

Darryl is starting to develop some serious power. He has 13 homeruns through the first 2 months. He also has 51 RBI's which is only 3 less than he had all of last year. Strawberry might become a star.
"What do you have to say now, Ghost?" Darryl said. " That you are hitting .253, and that is below average." "I just can't do good can I?" Darryl said. " How about this if you eclipse your homerun total from your first time around, I'll leave. Okay?" "Deal" League Notes: Who's the Best? Who is the best leadoff hitter in baseball? Is it Ricky Henderson of the Oakland A's? Or is it Tim "Rock" Raines of the Montreal Expos? Henderson who has 33 steals, is the major league leader. He has 5 more than Raines' 28. Henderson also has a .430 OBP connected to his .272 average. Raines has more power, he had 16 homers last season, but only 3 thus far. Raines' average is down from .318 to .270 this year, but is the better hitter out of the 2. We will see at the end of the year who is the best. Henderson at Spring Training this year Raines off to the racesDarryl's "line" Games 51 AB 186 H 47 2B 10 3B 5 HR 13 RBI 51 R 37 BB 25 K 57 AVG .253 OBP .340 SLG .570 OPS .909 Darryl's June next

Darryl's beginning to heat up and become a force in the batter's box, he also has begun to hit for average this month hitting .278 in June. He now has 21 homers this season, a career high.
"You are starting to do good Darryl. Don't slip up or it will all go away." "I'm fine man, nothing going to mess me up." "Don't get too cocky Darryl, or its going to bite you in the ass" "Lay Off" League Notes: "Doctoring" up the League: 19-Year old Dwight "Doc" Gooden is the best strikeout artist in baseball, right now. That's saying a lot for a teenager. With 112 K's in 102.1 IP he's averaging 9.9 K's a game. Taken with the 4th pick in the 1st round. The Twins knew they found something good, when in his debut he tossed 8 scoreless innings, and struck out 13. Gooden in AAA last seasonDarryl's "line" Games 75 AB 276 H 72 2B 11 3B 6 HR 21 RBI 67 R 55 BB 40 K 85 AVG .261 OBP .355 SLG .572 OPS .928 Darryl's July Next

I now think its safe to say that Darryl is a bonafide star. He had by far his best month in July hitting .349 7HR 20RBI's and made his first All-star appeareance, striking out while Pinch hitting for George Brett.
"How you like that Ghost? I'm 2nd in the AL in homers, 2nd in RBI's, and 3rd in runs." "Yeah, but your 1st in strikeouts. And your leading by 20 whiffs. Yeah you sure are great Darryl" "I just can't make you happy can I?" Darryl's "line" Games 98 AB 359 H 101 2B 13 3B 10 HR 28 RBI 87 R 72 BB 51 K 101 AVG .281 OBP .373 SLG .607 OPS .980 League Notes Something's foul in the LA bullpen Steve Howe the best closer in baseball last season is having a rough go at it this year. After converting 90% of his saves last season and closing out 45 games. He has already blown 10 saves this year, which already doubles his total from last season. That puts his save percentage at 68.8%. His ERA has risen from 2.03 to 5.72. When asked what the problem was, he replied, " I have no idea, but whatever it is I'm sure It's right under my nose." Howe being "just plain silly"

It looks like Darryl's .349 July might of been a one time thing. His average droppped to .200 in August. He did add 7 homeruns to make his total 35, which leads the American League.
Darryl shoved the paper in the ghosts face, " You see that ghost? 1st in the AL in homers." "It doesn't matter if you lead the league Darryl, if you hit .200 nobody's going to want you, Darryl, so I'd keep quiet. "I just can't make you happy can I?" Darryl's "line" Games 125 AB 459 H 121 2B 17 3B 10 HR 35 RBI 103 R 90 BB 62 K 130 AVG .264 OBP .352 SLG .573 OPS .925 League Notes Will the "Man of Steal" break 100? Rickey Henderson hasn't been caught stealing since June, and because of that he now has 91 stolen bases. His average has dropped to .256 because of a terrible August in which he only hit .128. His OBP is still at .411 on the season. He has more than a month to get 9 steals, I wouldn't put my money against him.
