Historic Replay (1901-present)
I decided to see if OOTP6 would be easier or harder to do an historic replay with...guess what it is the worst yet.
The biggest key to get correct is defense look over your rosters and make sure range and F% are close to accurate. 1) I used my 1901 file from OOTP5 to start 2) Since no matter what numerical factors you WANT to see it doesn't matter, OOTP6 works on 1-100...thus thats what I will have all ratings based on 3) I went to bbref.com and really put range through the grinder...The 1901 Pirates should be the best defensive team by a long shot. 4) Fixed running instincts, even if I have NO IDEA what the hell it effects. I made triple hitters speedy, low stealing ability but great instincts...Sam Crawford is an example. 5) The WHite Sox should be the speedy-basestealing running instincts team of the game...The Pale Hose didn't win the 1901 pennant based on pitching or defense...they won with base stealing, Mertes, Fielder Jones, Herm Macfarland and Isbell led the league in Steals. Step by step process So I run a couple of test seasons, mainly fixing STUFF and making Cy Young the God that he is...my main K pitchers should be Bill Donovan, Ned Garvin,Tom Hughes, Noodles Hahn and Mathewson... Fixed control since on defaults from Ankit's DB, Walk leaders will be abnormal...I make their TALENT their career Average, yet their RATINGS reflect 1901...they may go up they may go down...after 1901 it doesn't matter, variety is good. I use SoxMan's stadiums WITH ballpark Factors...yet I adjust them so no rating is lower than 80...none higher than 130. Why, you may ask? Well, true that a player's stats are already adjusted for park factors...I disagree with Ankit and others that I feel ballpark factors adjust talent, more than talent adjusts ballpark factors. For example, if Jimmie Foxx played at Baker Bowl...Babe Ruth would have been the 2nd best slugger of all time, HOWEVER if Foxx became a Boston Brave...we would have never heard of him...Braves Field is historically speaking...the WORST hitting park of all time...wonder why Rabbit Maranville is in the HOF? Not just defense, he was offensively a great player, look at his Pirate years....he just had the bad luck of being a Boston Brave most of his career. So I WANT that in my history...I want to know 'what if' Chuck Klein spent his career with the Dodgers? Would he have been a premier slugger? Probably not...'What if' Eppa Rixey or Babe Adams played in more even pitcher-hitter neutral parks...or better yet Grover Alexander...would Grover be the best pitcher that ever lived w/o Baker Bowl during his prime years? After running a few test years I get my totals and then adjust them by 10% so heavy influxes, such as Exposition Park's triples ratings are decreased from the players ratings. So why even mess with BallPArk Factors you say? Well, I want to minimize the doubling of ballpark factors in a players stats based on his 1901 team...yet I WANT a player that is traded to said team to get the boost that say...Exposition Park would give his triples amount...for example I don't want Honus Wagner to have 30 triples, yet if Sam Crawford is traded to Pittsburgh...I want a chance for him to have 5 or 10 more triples...with Ballpark Factors at 100...it would make NO difference is Crawford was traded to the Phils or Pirates...he would still hit 10-20 Hrs and 12-20 triples...I want the surprise of seeing Crawford slug 25 HRS if at Baker Bowl or 5 if playing at LH detriment South Side Park with its 330 line and 28 foot wall. May not be entirely accurate but then OOTP never has been with history...things like Cy Young having 10 saves and 40 GS will NEVER happen...you won't see Cy pitch 5 games a week, but in real life he did... Also these HRs are Out of the Park (Pun alert) and the first 20th century player to actually HIT a HR out of the Yard is Tim Jordan of the Superbas...in 1907!!! Yes, all these HRS in 1901 were ISPHRS... So I am not looking for detailed accuracy just a greater % that the men who led their specialty categories may lead again...the ones I have greater control over are HRS for hitters since OOTP6 is a modern day baseball program...HRS are the easiest to manipulate...for pitchers it's walks and K's...so the wild card is DEFENSE, the most important aspect to historic replay with this version is getting defense as close as possible. I finally get the roster totals I like and I have traded Crawford, Lajoie, Bill Keister (HR, AVG and Triples leaders respectively) to see if ballpark factors would give them slight boosts or decline...Crawford hits 18 HRS playing for Cincy, 28 HRS for the Phils...and 6 for the White Sox...so yes ballpark factors are good...Lajoie and Keister flucuate as well. My league totals AB-75572 H-21070 2bs-3832 3bs-1048 HRS-1898 BB-5574 HBP-1215 SO-9397 BABIP-.289 My setup... Player EVAL APR/MAY-30-0-50-20 June-30-20-30-20 JULY-30-40-20-10 AUG-30-50-15-5 SEPt/OCT-30-65-5-0 Era settings Bunt-very often (found anything less pitchers wouldn't complete games as much) Hit and run -not often- The hit and run really didn't come around until McGraw was settled in NY...around 1905 Stealing bases-not often, not until Cobb and Collins did steals really become league wide...in 1901 the Pirates and White Sox are the teams that really utilized steals PH/RP-Seldom Endurance-very good rotation-3 man (advent of the 154 schedule will bump it to 4) leadoof lineup- heavily favor speed hitter and development speed +40, Spring training always tries to increase HR power and lower pitcher endurance in favor of other ratings...so I skip it until the 90's Aging -40, With small rosters I want to keep old guys around a bit Roster Limits... IRL it was 15, but the AI will give you 2 pitchers that way...so I bump it up to 18...16 will get you 3 pitchers, but pitchers tire easy even with fatigue off and very good endurance so position players start pitching regularly. All financials disabled, trading freq VERy LOW, Favor Vets Injuries very low Position fatigue...off I also have guys that came in mid year on the DL until August...guys like Mike Donlin and Waddell...Donlin's high ratings will always make Baltimore a powerhouse, and in reality, he was off again on again for the Orioles. Waddell will be a dominant K guy even wehn he really couldn't stick with the Pirates took some time off and then pitched for the Cubs...Rube for a whole year will kill my K totals. Things I want to see -Lajoie, Delahanty, Burkett, Wagner, Keeler, Heindrick near the top of BA -Lajoie and Anderson near the 2bs leaders -Keister, Jimmy Williams, Crawford on top of 3bs -Crawford, Lajoie, Grady, Sheckard HRS leaders -Hoy, Fielder Jones, Thomas my BB leaders -Donovan my K and BB allowed man -The Pirates pitchers getting that great defense boost behind them -Cy Young coming close to his 1901 RL total Now for the 1st 3 years I will perform the 'jumping' such as Delahanty, the Cardinals jumping to the Browns and Keeler going to the Highlanders...after the first few years I will perform the most historic trades since I like Joe Jackson and Eddie Collins as White Sox, Tris Speaker as an Indian, and of course Babe Ruth as a Yankee. If they are traded afterwards, that's fine. Last edited by Carlton; 07-10-2004 at 07:44 PM. |

1900 OFFSEASON
Saturday, October 20th IN THE NEWS: The Cardinals withhold the final month’s pay on all but five players, including John McGraw and Wilbert Robinson, citing late hours, dissipation, and gambling as reasons for the poor showing of the team, which finished tied for 5th. Wednesday, October 31st IN THE NEWS: Ban Johnson writes a letter to NL president Nick Young seeking peace, based on parity as a ML for the AL. Wednesday, November 14th IN THE NEWS: The National League rejects the American League as an equal, declaring it an outlaw league outside of the National Agreement, thus inaugurating a state of war. This follows the AL's announcement two days ago tht it has made arrangements to go into Washington, Baltimore and Philadelphia. Two weeks later the AA makes it a 3-way battle. Monday, November 19th IN THE NEWS: At an American League meeting at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Chicago, Ban Johnson says the AL chose not to renew the National Agreement with the National League, but sees no need for friction between the two. Wednesday, November 21st IN THE NEWS: Given a 10-year contract to control the Baltimore franchise, John McGraw says he intends to be in baseball a long time, and wants to lease grounds in Baltimore where he can stay. He'll be in baseball 32 more years, but not in Baltimore. Nick Young says the National League wishes success to the American League, but does not consider it a major league. In New York, national guardsmen are playing an active schedule of indoor baseball at the New York Armory. The games between regiments teams are widely covered in the press. Monday, December 10th IN THE NEWS: At the National League meetings at the Fifth Avenue Hotel in New York, rumors fly. Ban Johnson says the American League has signed a lease on a park in Detroit. The Players Protective Association says its members will not sign with the NL. Tuesday, December 11th IN THE NEWS: A rumor that the PPA leaders have gone to Philadelphia to meet with Ban Johnson causes National League owners to "have something closely resembling a fit," says the New York Times. Players later admit the meeting took place. Wednesday, December 12th IN THE NEWS: The National League considers going back to 12 teams to counter American League moves into some cities. They invite Ban Johnson to come to the NL meeting, but change their mind about compromise and leave the AL head outside the meeting room. The NL awards the AL's Minnesota and Kansas City territories to the new Western League, even before the AL officially abandons them. The NL agrees to hear the players in a public meeting, but rejects all their demands. Friday, December 14th IN THE NEWS: Suffering from a drop in attendance in 1900, National League owners vote to cut costs with a 16-player limit after May 1. The PPA claims the move is aimed at pressuring players into signing by shrinking the number of jobs. Saturday, December 15th IN THE NEWS: Amos Rusie, out for the past two years with arm problems, is traded to the Reds by the Giants for young Christy Mathewson. Though only 30, Rusie, a future Hall of Fame pitcher, MAY not have the ability that brought him eight straight 20-game seasons, he has 245 wins collected in nine seasons. Mathewson, 0-3 with the Reds but 20-2 with Norfolk (Virginia League), is much coveted by Cincinnati owner John T. Brush, who is currently negotiating to buy control of the Giants from the unscrupulous Andrew Freedman. Before he takes over, Brush wants Mathewson in place as a Giants starter, rather than the "pitched out" Amos Rusie. 1901 OFFSEASON CON'T Friday, January 4th IN THE NEWS: The Baltimore American League club incorporates, with John McGraw as manager and part owner. Tuesday, January 22nd IN THE NEWS: Connie Mack, Philadelphia A's manager-GM, signs a 10-year lease on grounds at 29th and Columbia to be called Columbia Park. A contract is set for construction of single-deck stands to hold 7,500. Monday, January 28th IN THE NEWS: The American League formally organizes: the Baltimore Orioles, Philadelphia Athletics, and Boston Somersets are admitted to join the Washington Nationals, Cleveland Blues, Detroit Tigers, Milwaukee Brewers, and Chicago White Stockings. Three of the original clubs—Indianapolis, Minneapolis, and Buffalo—are dropped. League power aggregates in Ban Johnson as trustee for all ballpark leases and majority stockholdings, and with authority to buy out refractory franchises. Player limit is 14 per team, and the schedule will be 140 games. AL contracts give the Players Protective Association what it asked for, with 5-year limits on the rights to player services. Tuesday, January 29th IN THE NEWS: Newly named Rules Committee of Connie Mack, John McGraw, and Charles Comiskey, after rejecting a proposal to ban the bunt, recommends no changes at this time. Friday, February 8th IN THE NEWS: News leaks out that Napoleon Lajoie, the Phillies star 2B and leading National League hitter, has jumped to the new Philadelphia American League club, along with pitchers Chick Fraser and Bill Bernhard. Saturday, February 9th IN THE NEWS: Giants and Pirates outfielder Tom O'Brien, 28 dies in Phoenix. A popular player with the Giants, O'Brien played for Pirates in 1900, then accompanied the Giants and Dodgers last fall on a trip to Cuba for a series of exhibition games. On the boat trip over, he was told that if he drank enough sea water he'd be sick, but would then be cured of any sea sickness. Both O'Brien and Kid Gleason became violently ill following the prescription, but O'Brien was so affected that all his internal organs were damaged, and he never recovered. Tuesday, February 26th IN THE NEWS: National League officials meet with Charles "Chief" Zimmer, Pittsburgh catcher and the president of the PPA, and agree to contract concessions granted by the American League for NL players who will agree not to sign with AL clubs. Zimmer promises suspensions for PPA jumpers to the AL. Wednesday, February 27th IN THE NEWS: The National League Rules Committee decrees that all fouls are to count as strikes, except after two strikes. To cut the cost of balls fouled and unrecovered, the committee urges that "batsmen who foul off good strikes are to be disciplined." The American League will not adopt this rule for several years. Other new rules: catchers must play within 10 feet of the batter; a ball will be called if the pitcher does not throw to a ready and waiting batter within 20 seconds; players using indecent or improper language will be banished by the umpire. One rule stating that a ball will be called when a batter is hit by a pitch but, in a mail vote, the owners will rescind this in April, and a HBP will earn a batter first base. NOTE-One reason 1901 Stats were very off in 1901...hence why you should never try a happy medium between NL and AL Saturday, March 2nd IN THE NEWS: Jimmy Collins, Connie Mack's choice for the all-time best third baseman, leaves the Boston National League club to manage the American League's new Boston Somersets. The Beaneaters also lose OF Hugh Duffy, who will manage Milwaukee (AL), and C Billy Sullivan, who signs with the Chicago White Stockings. More than half the AL rosters—a total of 185—will be filled by NL players. NOTE-Many new age SABR people usually disregard Nap Lajoie's 1901 season due to the lesser talent in the AL, but it was vice versa...beloved Honus Wagner, Ed Delahanty and Willie Keeler actually played in the weaker league...which makes Nap Lajoies 1901 season even more impressive...he played amongst 10x better talent...still Nap's 1908 IIRC is even more impressive in regards to adjusted OPS+ Tuesday, March 5th IN THE NEWS: The American League approves a 14-player limit to go into effect 14 days after the start of the season. As noted by Cliff Blau, the limit is changed at the last minute, the deadline postponed for two weeks, and the limit increased to 15 by Ban Johnson, after six teams request the change. NOTE-This will be changed to 18 since most teams go with a 2 man staff with 15 and a 3 man staff but position players pitching often with 17 or 18 Monday, March 11th IN THE NEWS: The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that Baltimore manager John McGraw has signed a Cherokee Indian named Tokohoma. It is really black 2B Charlie Grant, who McGraw is trying to pass off as an Indian, but the ruse does not work. NOTE-A little bit of trivia, who is the first black man to have a ML contract? Stump your friends, amaze your house pets Thursday, March 28th IN THE NEWS: Phillies owner John Rogers files for an injunction prohibiting Nap Lajoie, Bill Bernhard, and Chick Fraser from playing for any other team—the most serious legal test of the reserve clause to date. NOTE-This issue will come into play during my history

I had ALOT of injuries for that setting, makes me wonder if it was broken...I still had position players pitch alot of games 2) Make sure if you want a RF to play RF you up his range by 5 so if you want Willie Keeler to be able to play LF and RF make him slightly higher in RF or else the AI puts him where they want...that goes for any position as well, make sure Bobby Lowe is rated higher at 3b or he won;t play there 3) Even with FA signed with no financials...it seems to be that one team will hoarde them ALL...so if you have 5 releases in a week, one team will grab all 5...whether they need them or not. Anyway, succesful 1901 season onto 1902 |

1902 OFFSEASON
Sunday, October 20th IN THE NEWS: Seven Cardinals, including the three top hitters-Jesse Burkett, Emmet Heidrick, and Bobby Wallace-and half the pitching staff, jump to the new St. Louis AL team. Tuesday, November 5th IN THE NEWS: Sportsman's Park in St. Louis is leased for five years by Ban Johnson and Charles Comiskey for an American League team; two weeks later the Milwaukee franchise is officially transferred. Tuesday, December 3rd IN THE NEWS: At the league meeting, the Milwaukee franchise is officially dropped from the American League and is replaced by the St. Louis Browns. Saturday, December 14th IN THE NEWS: Suffering from too much infighting and no leadership, four National League clubs elect A.G. Spalding as president. Two days later, a court voids the election and enjoins him from serving, and he will eventually quit. Saturday, January 4th IN THE NEWS: Bill Dinneen, winner of 36 games for the Beaneaters (National League) in the past two years, signs with the rival Boston Somersets (American League) John McGraw, Roger Bresnahan, Joe McGinnity, Jack Dunn and Steve Brodie jump to the NL NY Giants, McGraw will be named manager Sunday, January 26th IN THE NEWS: Lulu Ortman, a recently jilted girl friend of Boston's Chick Stahl, is arrested in Fort Wayne, IN, after an unsuccessful attempt to shoot him. Thursday, January 30th IN THE NEWS: Dashing Tony Mullane, the first player to have jumped the reserve rule by signing with the St. Louis Unions of the Union Association in 1883, signs a contract with Toledo, of the new American Association (AAA). Thursday, February 20th IN THE NEWS: Nick Young remains as National League president when A.G. Spalding bows out of the battle, but the league will have no effective leadership until 1903. Wednesday, March 12th IN THE NEWS: Cincinnati OF "Turkey Mike" Donlin is arrested for assaulting actress Minnie Fields and her escort. Donlin will plead guilty and serve a 6-month sentence. Thursday, March 27th IN THE NEWS: The Chicago Daily News uses the name "Cubs" (both with and without the quotes) in print, but the Colts moniker will occasionally be used for another three years. Thursday, April 3rd IN THE NEWS: The NL names club owners Arthur Soden, John T. Brush, and James Hart as an interim committee to run the league. IN THE NEWS: The Pennsylvania Supreme Court, reversing a lower court's decision, grants a permanent injunction (effective only in Pennsylvania) barring jumpers Nap Lajoie, Chick Fraser, and Bill Bernhard from playing for the A's, or any team but the Phillies. Not mentioned, but covered by the decision, are: Elmer Flick, Monte Cross, and Bill Duggleby of the A's; Ed Delahanty, Al Orth, Harry Wolverton, and Jack Townsend of Washington; Ed McFarland (White Stockings) and Red Donahue (Browns). IN THE NEWS: St. Louis Cardinals owner Frank DeHaas Robison offers to put up $10,000 that the Pirates will not repeat as NL champions. Pittsburgh players accept the challenge with a matching pool. Let the injunction wars begin: The Supreme Court of the District of Columbia issues a restraining order returnable May three against the National Baseball League stopping that organization from interfering with the four Washington AL ball players. In Chicago, Charles Comiskey comes to the defense of Eddie McFarland saying the White Stockings just won't play him in Pennsylvania. In St. Louis, lawyers for the NL Cardinals initiate proceedings in the circuit court of St. Louis to restrain Harper, Wallace, and Heidrick from playing with the St. Louis American League team. All three have signed contracts with the Cards. In Philadelphia, President Shibe of the AL Athletics says, according to his lawyers, the Supreme Court ruling applies only to Nap Lajoie and has no reference to any other player. IN THE NEWS: Outfielder Jimmy Sheckard of the AL Baltimore Orioles jumps the team and returns to the NL, the first American Leaguer to jump to the NL. In his short stay in the AL, Sheckard had been constantly razzed by fans about his contract jumping. White Sox president Comiskey says, We don't want Sheckard in our league. He has broken too many contracts." President Tom Daly of the Ball Players' Protective Association echoes the sentiments. "Our organization is unalterably opposed to such tactics as Sheckard has made use of. I am glad he has gone back to Brooklyn, for while he is a great ball player and a nice fellow personally we do not countenance violating a written contract as he has done. I suppose (Ned) Hanlon scared him into jumping." IN THE NEWS: A circuit court in St. Louis rules that the NL reserve clause is unfairly restrictive on three defectors who jumped to the Browns. Inability to retrieve jumpers gives the NL a strong push to reconcile differences with the AL. IN THE NEWS: Elmer Flick signs with Cleveland. Sporting Life says that A's officials "presumably consented" to the move. HArry Wolverton, Bill Duggleby and Chcik Fraser are returned to the Phillies, Flick will remain in Cleveland, Ed Delahanty, Happy Townsend, Al Orth in Washington and Monte Cross stays with the A's IN THE NEWS: Cleveland financier Charles Somers, who is also the president of the Boston club, meets with Nap Lajoie in Philadelphia and guarantees him a 4-year contract at $7,000 per year no matter what the legal outcome of his case. In 1903, Cleveland fans will vote to rename the club the Naps in honor of Lajoie. THE NEWS: Connie Mack signs Rube Waddell, who was pitching in the Pacific Coast League. IN THE NEWS: A federal court judge rules that Brooklyn has no claim on C Deacon McGuire, who jumped to Detroit. Two weeks later, another U.S. judge denies jurisdiction to stop Nap Lajoie from playing for Cleveland, thus ending the Phillies' chances of regaining him legally. IN THE NEWS: John McGraw, accused by Ban Johnson of trying to wreck the Baltimore and Washington clubs, negotiates his release from the Orioles and officially signs to manage the Giants at $11,000 a year, although he'd already secretly signed a contract several days earlier brought to Baltimore by Giants secretary Fred M. Knowles. McGraw says, "I wish to state that I shall not tamper with any of the Baltimore club's players." But conspiring with National League owners Brush and Andrew Freedman, McGraw swings the sale of the Orioles their way, enabling them to release Orioles Dan McGann, Roger Bresnahan, Joe McGinnity, Jack Dunn, Steve Brodie and Jack Cronin for signing by the Giants. Joe Kelley and Cy Seymour go to Brush's Cincinnati Reds. IN THE NEWS: Giants owner Andrew Freedman announces he has purchased controlling interest in the Baltimore club and releases Dan McGann, Roger Bresnahan, Joe McGinnity, and Jack Cronin to sign with New York. Mike Donlin, Joe Kelley and Cy Seymour go to the Reds, where Kelley will take over as manager. |

Yes true metsgeek...I found a game where this could have likely happened around that time period.
This game had Lave Cross with 2 SBs...Dave Fultz is on the Highlanders and such could not have done this feat with the A's. The same thing with the infamous and humerous Jim St. Vrain running to 3rd. That was actually Honus Wagner and not Herman Long he grounded to, but Jim St. Vrain never started against the Pirates during April BTW...as soon as I get the new version of Cato up and running and redo the Cato history I'll continue this... |

Thanks remang...hopefully this is not only a good read, but for those doing historical leagues it will save time since I show the fixes to Ankit's DB at the beginnin gof the year. PLUS I will throw in some obscure historicla stories, like Honus Wagner actually getting into fights...I guess Cobb wasn't the only rowdy one.
BTW< for anyone that's following, this is the BEST year I EVER had in any historical replay....I am at the World Series now but here are some GREAT stories I will be reporting on The 1st year Highlanders and Pilgrims battling to the last game of the year for the Pennant The Reds and Pirates battling to the last week and an odd way that the pennant is decided CY Young and Kid Nichols battling in their respective win columns for the career lead in wins (held by Pud Galvin) and in the mold of Goat Anderson...an obscure RF for the Pirates is the key to their success and he ALMOST wins the triple crown STN rookie P Chappie McFarland leading in ERA most of the year...yet only getting 2.8 Run support Plus Addie Joss being a big disappointment |
