Minor League Free Agents

If someone could please provide an explanation of how this works, I would be appreciative.

My understanding is that players with more than 6 pro seasons on a minor league contract will become free agents at the end of the year if they are on a minor league contract or if they are in the minors when their major league contract expires.

Now, everytime I've ever offered a contract to a minor league player, all they request is to resign an extention for another minor league contract. I can't offer them any money, only a MLC. On this basis:

1. If they agree to a minor league contract as an extention, will they still be free agents at the end of the year. If this is the case, then how can we offer real money to keep them on our teams if we so desire?

2. If accepting a minor league contract as an extension removes the player from becoming a minor league free agent, then what's the point of even having this feature if everyone can simply be resigned for a MLC extention and therefore not cost your team any money?

Just curious if anyone has already worked through this issue. If not, I'll try to run some test leagues in the next few days.

I`ve only run one off-season with the 6.03 patch, so maybe I haven`t seen everything.

I`ve resigned minor league players to minor league contracts, and they`ve stayed on my organization in the next year. Though, there are minor league players (especially with 2+ stars) who will demand major league contracts, even if they haven`t played in an ML game all year, and will leave your team if they don`t get it. As a "house rule", I wouldn`t resign minor league players to minor league extensions as it does not seem the AI will do so (though they will give major leaguers minor league extensions). If you want to keep them, put them on the 40-man roster.

Minor League FA is more for the players that develop slowly and stay in the minors for 6 years without getting called up causing them to stay on minor league contracts, not as much for the veterans signed to minor league contracts.
