"2004 Seattle Mariners, A year for the AGING"

Mariners hope age doesn't catch up to them

Seattle AP
March 30, 2004

This could be our last chance said long time Mariner Edgar Martinez. We aren't as young as we use to be so it won't be as easy for us to go out there day in and day out and be able to win. The injuries might come a little more often now that we are older. This all being said by Edgar Martinez should mean it is true. The Mariners might be the oldest team in Major League Baseball. The Mariners also have 11 players on the 25 man roster that are 34 or older, including Starting Pitcher Jamie Moyer and DH Edgar Martinez. Moyer says he still thinks he is capable of winning 10-16 games this season, he also feels his best years aren't behind him. He said he would decide on retirement sometime in the near future. We also are expecting DH Edgar Martinez to retire at seasons end.

With the season drawing closer and closer now and only 8 days until opening day the Seattle Mariners have announced a new Head Coach/General Manager. Brandon Redman will assume both of these rolls with the Mariners. Now that we have a head coach and a General Manager we can get the lineups, rotations, and maybe some minor transactions under our belt to start the year. One major transaction that took place in the offseason was the signing of longtime Twins Closer "Everyday" Eddie Guardado. Guardado has 116 career saves and an ERA of 4.62. Eddie will be entering his 12th year in the MLB but his first not in a Twins UNI. The signing of Guardado was to be because Kazuhiro Sasaki announced he would head back home in Japan to play baseball over there and retire from the MLB. Sasaki was in the MLB for 4 years with all 4 being with the Seattle Mariners. Sasaki had 129 career saves and an ERA of 3.14 with the Mariners.

During the offseasons we also made a few other trades that could also help us compete. Our lone trade sent SS Carlos Guillen to Detroit for SS Ramon Santiago. While Carlos Guillen was with the Mariners he batted .264 with 8- doubles and 16 triples in 6 seasons. We will miss Guillen in Seattle because he was one of the fan favorites here. Ramon Santiago was Detroits young SS last year who played in the MLB but might not have been ready. He batted .225 with 18 doubles. We feel with a little more time in the Minors he could develop into a player a little better than Carlos Guillen but with less power. So with that deal in place who was going to be the Mariners 2004 starting Shotstop? We would soon find out 2 weeks later as the Mariners announced they had signed longtime Giant Shortstop Rich Aurilla. We signed Aurilla to a one year deal worth about 2.5 million. With the Giants last year Aurilla batted .277 with 13 homeruns and 58 RBI. With the addition of Aurilla the Mariners added a guy who can hit for average and hit us a few homeruns.

During the offseason we did have one bad move though. We let 4 year Centerfielder Mike Cameron walk away from our organization. Cameron came to the Mariners in the deal that sent Ken Griffey Jr. to the Reds in 2000. With the Mariners Cameron hit 88 homeruns and 344 RBI. Cameron will probably the most missed Mariner that left this offseason. Mike signed with the Mets about a month ago on a 3 year deal worth about 4.55 million per season, so the total contract is worth around 13.5 million. We wish the best of luck to Carlos Guillen and Mike Cameron and hope the help their new clubs.

Yankees, D-rays start season in Japan

New York Times
March 30, 2004

Today is opening day for 2 teams from the AL East. The Yankees and the Devil Rays will be starting the season in Japan today at 5:05 AM EST. These 2 teams will be the onlt teams in action today in Major League Baseball. Americas first game will be April 4, 2004 between the HaTeD Redsox and the Baltimore Orioles. D-Rays manager Lou Pinella has guaranteed that his team will not finish in last place this season. Every year since the team exsisted the D-Rays have finished in last place. But once again Lou has guaranteed not this year.

The pitching matchup for the D-Rays and Yankees was Kevin Brown acquired from LA for Jeff Weaver Vs Doug Waechter one of Tampa's many decent prospects. Brown in his career in LA was troubled by back and neck problems but still managed a decent time while he was there. Brown went to the Dodgers after the Marlins won the world series in 1997. Brown was 58-32 with a 3.09 ERA in 5 seasons with LA. Brown is looking to bounce back and have an injury free season with the Yankees and he will have to be strong if the Yankees expect to contend because their pitching is not good at all. Doug Waechter is making only his 6th start of his career. Last year with the D-Rays he started 5 games and went 3-2 with a 3.31 ERA. The D-rays dont look to be that bad of a team if the pitching holds up I expect Lou's guarantee to come true.

Here are the lineups for both teams on opening day.

Tampa Bay 14 Yankees 6

D-Rays trounce Yankees in both Japan games

Much like the first game of the series the D-Rays came out strong and whopped the Yankees once again but this time it was 10-1.The Devil Rays offense was supplied by Tino Martinez who went 2-5 with 3 RBI and Catcher Toby Hall who went 3-5 with 3 RBI. The Devil Rays looked very good in both games really comming out strong. The Yankees lone run this game came off the bat of their catcher Jorge Posada on an RBI single by Jorge Posada in the top of the fourth inning. The pitchers in this game were Sp Javier Vazquez and Sp Mark Hendrickson. Vazquez went 2.2 innings allowing 7 hits and 6 earned runs while striking out 3 and walking 1. The starting pitcher for the D-Rays was Mark Hendrickson who pitched outright awesome. He went 7 innings allowing 1 run which was not earned and struck out 6 while only walking 1! Winning Pitcher: Mark Hendrickson (1-0) Losing Pitcher: Javier Vazquez (0-1)

Mark throws in Japan during warm ups.

The Yankees will look to rebound from this Japan series and try to even it when they come back from Japan and go to Tampa for the final 2 games of the series. The fan in New York are already calling for Joe Torees head. So we will see what happens in the comming weeks in New York. Will a deal be had?

Missing Cammy?

Pffft. Not likely. I'd been lobbying for THREE YEARS to get him out of Seattle. Guy plays a great CF but he'd strike out in t-ball.

I dont know what roster set you're using but does it contain our valued prospects? In other words, do the following people exist in our AAA club?
Travis Blackely
Clint Nageotte
Justin Leone
Bucky Jacobson
Jose Lopez
Jamal Strong
Matt Thorton

Those are all major league ready players we have at Tacoma and players I'd like to see playing in Seattle now while we ship Boone, Aurilla, Spiezio, and Winn for prospects. That way we give our youngsters a tryout, and free up over 50 million in payroll to go big in the offseason. Like say:
Beltran if no more than 15 mil
Ordonez same deal
Koskie for third
Palmeiro at one or two years, 3 mil for DH and to stop him from hitting HR against him (he has like 50 against Seattle)
maybe Delgado? maybe Nomar? maybe Pedro? So many options!!!

Anyways, that's my org rant, sorry but it's kind of a knee jerk reaction when my beloved but not baseball savvy Ms come up.

A lot of people did, just not the smart ones. Most people kinda latched onto him because he was Griffey's replacement and they felt betrayed by Griff. I could just never get over the fact that he was making 8 mil to bat 220 and strike out 8 gazillion times no matter how good his D was in CF I'd much rather have Winn batting 280 at 3 mil a year.

Please don't trade Freddy in this one. Please?

I'm holding onto my ticket stub from the last game he pitched in Seattle uni in case he never comes back.

Three Mariners announce retirement

Seattle (AP)
April 2, 2004

Edgar Martinez, Pat Borders, and Terry Mullholland all announced their plans to retire after the season today. Martinez during his 16 year career with Seattle batted .315 with 297 homeruns and 1198 RBI. Most people in Seattle will be sad to see Edgar Martinez finally go after 16 great years with Seattle. Now the question that has come is will Edgar Martinez be in the Hall Of Fame? Some say Yes because of his great production. BUT others say no because he did not play a posistion in the field. But I say why did the MLB get the DH if a player who plays DH and nothing else can't make the Hall Of Fame. I guess we will leave this to the voters. Borders and Mullholland are both going to start the season in AAA Tacoma. In Borders 15 year career he batted .256 with 67 homeruns and 329 RBI. This is his 3rd year with Seattle. Mullholland in his 17 year career went 119-131 with an ERA if 4.37 ERA. He also had 1246 strikeouts 630 walks and he only had 5 saves.

Mariners announce Opening Day Starter

Seattle (AP)
April 5, 2004

After 3 days of wondering the Seattle Mariners finally announced that 41 year old Jamie Moyer will get the nod against Anaheim on the 6th of April. Moyer last year went 21-7 with a 3.27 ERA. We fully expect a year just like last out of Jamie we know he is capable of it said GM/Head Coach Brandon Redman. On opening day Jamie Moyer will be opposed by Angels starter Bartolo Colon who last year was 15-13 with a 3.87 ERA. Manager Brandon Redman said we know Colon he throws hard everytime but sometimes he can't control his pitches so we will look to capitalize on all of his mistakes and hopefully come out of the game with a win to start of this 162 game season.

Moyer will have to face an Angel lineup that is much more powerful than it was last year with the additions of Rightfielder Vladamir Guerrero and Leftfielder Jose Guillen. Moyer said "The lineup has alot of pop in it so I will look to keep the ball low in the zone so that they cant crush my high pitches out of the park." The Angels lineup is right up there with the Yankees but we all know what happened to them to start the season a 2 game sweep by the D-Rays.

Brandon Redman has really shaken things up this season in the pen and in the starting rotation. First of all he named Jamie Moyer starter but thats not even close to craziest thing he did. Take a look at the rest of his rotation and tell me if you can see whats crazy about it?

1. Sp Jamie Moyer
2. Sp Freddy Garcia
3. Sp Joel Pineiro
4. Sp Gil Meche
5. Sp Rafael Soriano????

The Mariners have decided to go with Soriano over Ron Villone, Ryan Franklin, and Kevin Jarvis. Redman said " We decided to go with Soriano over the others because we feel this kid has a huge upside and he will be able to do better than the others. But if it fails expect Soriano to go back to the bullpen and Ron Villone to come in and take Soriano's spot in the rotation."

The rest of the Mariners bullpen looks like this

Mop Up: Ron Villone, J.J. Putz
Middle: Shigetoshi Hasegawa, Ryan Franklin, Ron Villone
Set Up: Julio Mateo, Mike Myers
Closer: Eddie Guardado

Next Stop Opening Day

Seattle (AP)
April 5, 2004

Well after the pitching staff was announced there was only one thing left to do. And that was to announce the lineup vs lefties and righties. Manager Brandon Redman took a long hard look and compared who was good at what against what kind of pitchers. Some things with the lineup the fans might not argree with but right now i am just doing what is best for the fans. One thing that fans might not like is that against Righties Dave Hansen will be starting at 3B over Jolbert Cabrera and Willie Bloomquist who will be starting at 3B against lefties. Also catcher Dan Wilson will also not be starting everyday. Wilsom will catch against right handed pitchers and Ben Davis will start against left handed pitchers. During interleague play Edgar Martinez who recently announced he will retire will not play against NL teams because of his lack of fielding abilities. There are 6 players in the lineup who will be playing everday though and they are Rightfielder Ichiro Suzuki, Centerfielder Randy Winn, Leftfielder Raul Ibanez, Firstbaseman John Olerud, Second Baseman Brett Boone, and Shortstop Rich Aurilla. Aurilla maybe our biggest pick-up this offseason he is good against all sorts of pitchers. The complete everday lineups are just below this paragraph.

Lineup Vs RHP
1. RF Ichiro Suzuki
2. CF Randy Winn
3. DH Edgar Martinez
4. 2B Brett Boone
5. 1B John Olerud
6. LF Raul Ibanez
7. SS Rich Aurilla
8. 3B Dave Hansen
9. C Dan Wilson

Lineup Vs LHP
1. RF Ichiro Suzuki
2. CF Randy Winn
3. DH Edgar Martinez
4. 2B Brett Boone
5. 1B Jon Olerud
6. SS Rich Aurilla
7. LF Raul Ibanez
8. C Ben Davis
9. 3B Willie Bloomquist

Here is all of the hitters on the team. ANy others you would like to know something about just let me know.

3 Game Series Vs Anaheim at Safeco Field in Seattle

Seattle (AP)
April 6, 2004

Game 1 Bartolo Colon (NR) Vs Jamie Moyer (NR)

This was almost the great way to start a season. Both starters pitched great with Colon pitching 8 shutout innings while only allowing 2 hits and striking out 3. Moyer was also stellar in the opener going 7.1 innings allowing 1 ER and 5 hits while striking out 3. The Angels would strike first in the 2004 season opener on a 4th inning RBI single by offseason acqusition Jose Guillen. That would be the only run until the 9th inning. In the 9th with one guy down the Mariners brought in releiver J.J. Putz to pitch to Troy Glaus with no one on. Putz threw 2 pitches to Glaus and the 2nd resulted in a 389 FT bomb to make it 2-0 Angels. The Mariners would get the final 2 outs of the inning and head to the bottom half of the inning down 2-0. Colon would come out to start the 9th but he would only face one batter and Ichiro singled to left, that end Colon's night so incame Troy Percival. On Percivals 2nd pitch Ichiro stole 2nd base. On the very next pitch with 0 out Martinez smoked a base hit into left to score Ichiro from 2nd making it 2-1 Angels. Martinez would take 2nd on a throw home to try and get Ichiro. So now we have 2nd and 3rd with 0 down Boone and Olerud would groundout to the mound and no one would score so with 2 outs and the game on the line up came Leftfielder Raul Ibanez. Ibanez would hit a single to right to tie the game at 2 and Percival blew his first save of the year. But now the Mariners ahve Aurilla up with men on 1st and 3rd. Oh well what's that matter nothing to Aurilla he gorunds out to the mound to end the 9th on to extras we go.

In the 10th and 1th there were no action what so ever except a single by pinch hitter Chone Figgins. in the 11th the Mariners brought in Ryan Franklin he would pitch a good 11th. In the 12th on Franklins 8th pitch of the AB to 1B Josh Phelps Phelps crushed one to deep leftfield that barely cleared the wall but it did and it gave the Angels a 3-2 lead. Franklin would finish the 12th giving up nothing else. In the bottom half of the inning with one down Raul Ibanez single to leftfield. But Aurilla came up and grounded out and same with Dave Hansen and the Mariners would fall on opening day 3-2 to the divisional rivals Anaheim Angels.

Winning Pitcher: Scott Shields (1-0, 0.00 ERA)
Losing Pitcher: Ryan Franklin (0-1, 4.50 ERA)
Save: None
Player Of The Game: Bartolo Colon 8 IP, 3 K's and 0 walks with only 2 hits given up

Mariners stats:
Raul Ibanez: 3-5, 1 RBI
Brett Boone and John Olerud a combined: 0-8
Aurilla, Hansen, and Wilson: 0-12
Ichiro: 1-5
Jamie Moyer: 7.1, 5 hits, 1 ER, 0 BB, and 3 K

Mariners Hold On After 9th Inning collapse

Seattle (AP)
April 7, 2004

Game 2 Jarrod Washburn (NR) Vs Freddy Garcia (NR)

Mariners headed into the 9th inning with a 5-2 lead and in came Guardado so everyone figured game over. We were soon to find out that this game was far from over. The inning started off with Pinch Hitter Jeff Davanon and he lead off with a solo homerun. After finally getting an out Anderson came up and doubled and then was drove in by a 2 run homerun by Josh Phelps to tie things up. Glaus would also drive in a run this inning to give the Angels the lead. The Mariners head to the bottom half, demoralized and lifeless. But with 1 down Edgar Martinez homered to tie up the game, and send this game to extras. IN extras the Mariners Julio Mateo came into pitch for the 2nd straight day. He did very well not giving up a run. In the bottom of the 10th Ibanez lead off with a single then Ben Davis bunted him to 2nd. SO up next with a chance to win the game was Willie Bloomquist. Willie smoked a double to the give and won the game for the Mariners as Raul Ibanez scored for the Mariners.

Freddy Garcia had nasty stuff going today. He went 7 innings allowing 2 hits, 2 runs, and only one of the runs was earned. Garcia also struck out 9 in his 2004 season debut. Washburn for the Angels had a rough outing going 6.1 innings allowing 7 hits and 5 ER while striking out 5 and walking 6. Guardado and Percival blew the saves for their teams. This was Percivals 2nd blown save in as many days.

Winning Pitcher: Julio Mateo (1-0, 0.00)
Losing Pitcher: Troy Percival (0-1, 8.10)

Final Score 7-6

Tampa Bay remained unbeaten as they are now 4-0 after sweeping the Yankees.

Martinez hits number 300 in Mariner loss

Seattle (AP)

Well for the first time all year the Mariners starter was shaky. Joel Pineiro allowed 5 ER in 5 innings and it put the Mariners in a hole early down 5-0, the Mariners at one point fell behind 9-0 when Ron Villon came in to releive Pineiro and he gave up 4 more runs. The offense was nowhere to be found and the Mariners headed into the 9th down 9-2. So with most of the fans gone home the Mariners decided to start a rally. Slapping hits all over the field Martinez hit homerun number 300, and 301 to have the Mariners only down 9-8 and Edgar came up for his 3rd AB of the inning. On a 3-2 count Martinez put a charge into one and it looked to be the 3rd homerun of the inning but it was not to be as Vlad Guerrero jumped and robbed the homerun to send the Anegls home happy as they took the game 9-8 and the series 2-1. Angels 9 Mariners 8 After the game Martinez held a postgame news conference.

Winning Pitcher: Derrick Turnbow (1-0, 0.00)
Losing Pitcher: Joel Pineiro (0-1, 9.00)
Save: Scott Shields (1)
Notes: Kelvim Escobar left game with a Torn Bicep Muscle so he will mis 5-6 weeks.

Media: First of all I just want to congradualte you on your 300th career homerun. Now that you have that many what is your next goal?

Edgar: Obviously my first goal is to get this team into the playoffs this season so I would have to say that is my next goal. And any other personal things that happen to me like Homeruns and RBI's will be 2nd to my team getting the wins.

Media: Did you get your 300th career homerun ball back?

Edgar: Yes, I gave the fan who caught it 2 bats in exchange for the ball, I'm going to give this ball to my mother who started my whole career for me.

Media: What are your expectations on the team this year?

Edgar: I think we still could win the division all though it looks like a longshot. The team is kind of "old" so we can't do the things we use to. But our best bet would be to go for the wildcard.

Mariner news that is just in. The Mariners have claimed Salomn Torres off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Thriller in Oak town ends in disappointment

The Mariners and end played in an Extra inning thriller tonight. Both starting pitches pitched pretty decent. We will pick up the action in the 7th with the Mariners trailing 3-0. To start the inning 2 men would get on with no outs up came Boone he doubled in Edgar Martinez to make it 3-1. Ibanez would then come up and smack 2 run single to tie the game up at 3. It would stay deadlock at 3 and head to extras. In the 12th the A's were threatening with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs but the Mariners pitching staff bared down and ot the final out to end the threat and stay deadlocked at 3. So going to the 14th still tied at 3 the Mariners lead off the inning with a double by Edgar Martinez. Up next was Olerud who was pinch hit by CF Randy Winn who got the day off. Winn grounded out and Martinez advanced to 3rd. Aurilla came up and struck out to make it a man on 3rd with 2 outs. Ibanez stepped in and with a 3-1 count smashed a single straight up the middle to give the mariners the lead 4-3 heading to the bottom half. Guardado came back in for his 2nd inning of work and Ohhh what a mistake it was by Seattle Head Coach Brandon Redman. Crosby lead off with a double then was singled in by Byrnes to tie the game at 4 with no outs. Up next was Chavez. Chavez smoked a double down the rightfield line. Ichiro tried to caught it off but missed and Eric Byrnes scored to win it for the A's 5-4.

Winning Pitcher: Ricardo Rincon (1-0, 0.00)
Losing Pitcher: eddie Guardado (0-1, 32.41)

Player Of The game: Eric Chavez 3-7 with 2 RBIs including the GW double

Game Notes:
Time: 5:02
Attendance: 21793 (43662) at Network Associates Coliseum
Weather: Partly cloudy (45 degrees), wind blowing out to right at 16 mph

Soriano,Mariners strong in debut

Seattle (AP)
April 10, 2004

Rafael Soriano made the most anticapated start of the season after being named the teams 5th starter instead of one of the Mariners best releivers. Soriano went only 5 innings in his first start of the season. He gave up only 3 hits and 1 ER. He also struck out 3 and walked 2. Tim Hudson on the other hand was getting hit hard all night. Tim Hudson also pitched only 5 innings but his 5 were much worse than Rafael Soriano's. Hudson gave up 13 hits, and 6 ER. He also struck out 3 and walked 1. After this sorry performance by Hudson his ERA sky rocketed to 5.79.

The Mariners struck early and often against Hudson. They started off the game by scoring 3 in the first inning. They scored all 3 runs on RBI singles. They added another in the 2nd inning and the A's scored their first run in the 2nd as well to make 4-1 after 2. Olerud would add a homerun in the 5th to increase the Mariner lead to 5-1. Ryan Franklin releived Soriano after 5 innings. Franklin was down right horrible. He pitched 0.1 innings allowed 3 ER and all most cost the Mariners the game in one inning. Villon came in and shut the inning down to make it 5-4 after 5. Going into the 8th at 6-4 Boone stepped up with Randy Winn on first and smoked a 2 run shot to deep leftfield making it 8-4 Mariners. SO the game is over right? Guardado is comming in. Guardado with another shaky outing. He allowed 2 ER in 1 one inning and luckily stranded the bases laoded with 2 down in the bottom of the 9th to get the Mariners the win. "Everday" Eddie has been all but perfect all year he has been horrible rather. He has an ERA of 27.01 in 2.2 innings.

Mulholland and Jarvis released

Seattle (AP)
April 11, 2004

After many discussing we have decided to let go of Veterans Terry Mulholland and Sp Kevin Jarvis. Jarvis and Mulholland both started the year in AAA Tacoma. Jarvis pitched in one game and went 0-1 with a 2.00 ERA. Mulholland has yet to pitch a game this season. Other news around the clubhouse was that Salomn Torres was placed on the 40 man roster and called up to Seattle as Lefty Ron Villone was sent down to AAA Tacoma. Villone in 4.1 innings pitched had an ERA of 8.31 so we decided we should bring up recently acquired Hard Throwing righty Salomn Torres.

Seattle's Bats Come Alive

Seattle (AP)
April 11, 2004

The Seattle bats came out swinning today. The Mariners collected 16 hits today. 4 of the hits came of the bat of Leftfield Raul Ibanez who went 4-5 with 4 RBI. 5 Mariners had at least 2 hits today against the A's pitching staff. Moyer was on the hill for the Mariners as the Mariners looked to take the rubber game of the series. Moyer pitched very well again, he pitched 6 innings gave up 4 hits and 1 ER. He also struck out 5 while only walking 1. Zito on the other hand another disappointing outing. Zito lasted 7 innings but gave up 13 hits and 6 ER. Every Mariner came out swinging at his big overhand curve ball and the were really smacking it around the field.

Seattle's big offensive guy this game was Leftfield Raul Ibanez who went 4-5 with 4 RBI. 3 of the RBI came off a 3 run shot in the 8th which put the game out of reach for the Mariners. Randy Winn also ahd a good game as he added 2 RBI and collected only 1 hit. John Olerud and Rich Aurilla also collected 3 hits but no RBI to show for it. The A's 1 and 2 hitters collected their 3 runs with Bobby Crosby knocking in 2 and Mark Kotsay knocking in 1. Oakland 4-6 hitters went a combined 1-11 with the only hit comming off the bat of Eric Chavez.

Winning Pitcher: Jamie Moyer (1-0, 1.35)
Losing Pitcher: Barry Zito (0-2, 7.43)
Save: Shigetoshi Hasegawa (1)
