How about a points system

This is in regards to those who complain about All-Star/MVP selections.

I suggest rather than just going the route of AI/human choices to instead assign points. The player with the most points is considered the starter or MVP.

The idea being something like

Batting avg: for each .010 above .275: 5 points
HR: 1 point for each
RBI: 1 point for each
GWRBI: 5 points for each
Strikout: -1 point
etc

Have the ability to edit the point based on each person choosing and also allow editing for position (for example you probably don't want batting stats considered for choosing pitching, or you want to include Double Plays made for outfielders but not for infielders)

This would be a better way than just having the AI or user choose.

For MVP voting you would need a way to even out the stats, but for All-Star it be a very good system.

How about you post your top 5 nominees in each league as a poll and we will vote the MVP for you.

That's probably how it works now...I'm sure the code for choosing an MVP involves a point system very much like that.

I'm not sure if they are related, but in the box scores there is a line called Game Score listed for the Starting pitchers. I'm not even sure how its calculated or what it means but it may be related to an MVP/Cy Young/All Star scoring system.

Anyone know?

I am guessing that the point system that is probably used is similar to the point system from the "Top Peformances" report. Just a thought....

Game Score is a system for rating a pitcher's performance devised by Bill James. The higher the score the better. The formula is defined in ESPN's stat glossary as
Quote:
Game Score. Start with 50 points. Add 1 point for each out recorded, (3 points per inning). Add 2 points for each inning completed after the 4th. Add 1 point for each strikeout. Subtract 2 points for each hit allowed. Subtract 4 points for each earned run allowed. Subtract 2 points for each unearned run allowed. Subtract 1 point for each walk.
