Released from All-star team?

I just ran across a strange thing, a player was released from the NL AS team on the day of the game and then claimed by another team a couple of days later

Tuesday 7/2/1901 :
NL Allstars: Released P Kid Nichols, he refused assignment to minors.
Cleveland: Ted Breitenstein has been claimed off waivers from Chicago (N).

Monday 7/8/1901 :
Detroit: Free agent P Kid Nichols has been signed to a contract of $3,820,000 per year, for 1 year.

I am playing with a roster limit of 17 players so I am guessing that that is the reason that the NL team wanted to send Nichols down to the minors, I didn't think about this causing a problem until I was looking over the year's transactions.
