v7 "Major" Plan

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have ADD and am already trying to move on to v7. I simply had a thought about v7 that I would like to see discussed.

It has been posted here that the “official” update policy of OOTP is for each new version to have one big “thing” such as the new DIPS engine and many small additions.

For the most part, I think this has been a very effective strategy and I for one am very happy with the progress made from v2 (when I first found OOTP) to our current v6.

Now my thought is on v7 for the “major” upgrade to be the countless little things that have been discussed over the years as opposed to any other major change. We could call the major upgrade the “Details” upgrade

I am talking about the things that always fall through the cracks stuff like:

• Stealing with two strikes
• Award voting choices (ai, human, combo) even a simple question at end of season – choose own awards? Yes – choose the award winners, no = AI does it. Invaluable for on-line leagues and control freaks like myself.
• All-star game voting choices (ai, human, combo) see awards voting
• Hold runner as default (95% of time real life runners are held) with “don’t hold” being the option
• Support for full screen 1280 x 1024 and higher
• Player designation – see my other thread on this: http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...threadid=62481
• Financial co-efficient (probably not minor – but has been on the drawing board for quite some time)
• More details in ballpark editing
• Build new stadium
• Umpires
• Agents
• Mound visits
• “odd” plays – anyone remember the “weird” things that could happen in the APBA board game. Those things you see at a game where the announcer says “no matter how many games you go to, there is always a chance you will see something you have never seen before”
• More and better PbP – I think in a text sim, you can almost never do enough here
• Trade Shop/Block improvement
• News – maybe this is major, but I think we are all ready for better news. Specifically I want to see things like “Bonds move to third all-time in homers with 661” “Prior sets Cubs record with 312 K’s” “Randy Johnson retired after 22 seasons and has been inducted into the Hall of Fame”
• Ability to delete retired players!!!!
• More player ratings such as fan favorite, personality, etc.
• Managers
• Arbitration hearings
• Expansion, expansion drafts
• Calendar – great example here: http://www.donnacom.com/ootp_calendar-nov.JPG
• Better in game scheduling (incorporating stickware?)
• Complete spring training overhaul, possible including games, but certainly a better system then current.
• Abilty to view post-season stats, by round, overall, etc
• Dropped foul balls, throwing errors, etc – honestly I don’t notice this much myself but have read several well written rants on it

BTW – I think this website does a better job of addressing all of this stuff then any I have ever seen: http://www.donnacom.com/ootpideas.html

What do you guys think – fix all the little stuff (and what little stuff did I forget, I know there is a plethora) or give us something big?

If you want a nice news section, you don't have to go very far.... check out the news section in Puresim.....

I have probably downloaded PureSim demo's about 5 times, it just never caught my attention - for one thing it was just WAY too slow to sim a single season.

A BIG one for me: single league post season/playoff options, and, as an ancillary note, customized post season options-- three, five, seven game series and perhaps even an "Elite Eight" seeded championship--for conventional 2-league setups.

If single league isnt an option, I'd sure like some way to add a third league, to play out all those Federal League/ Continental League/ PCL as major league scenarios.

I've always wanted "little" stuff fixed before major changes were made.

I agree with this. Fixing all of the things asked for over and over will certainly decrease the amount of stuff Kuffrey has to read...

And we just got an engine upgrade, so adding to the depth of play by doing a lot of the above will help significantly.

Oh, and you forgot the league settings option to trade draft picks.

I agree 100%, I would like to see a lot of those 'smaller' items added/fixed before any more major changes are made.

-One other small thing I would like to see. Currently you still can't bring your infield and outfield in at the same time. So if the opposing team has the winning run on third you have to choose to bring in one or the other, you can't do both.

Copied from thread on financials.....

IMO, the priorities list for OOTP7 should be:

1. Vastly improve the AI's handling of finances.
2. Better play-by-play and news system - using outside freelanced writers and having at least 20 times the variety that currently exists.
3. Improved handling of historical rosters/team management (see 6to's "third catcher" thread for details on this). As a historical simmer, I'd like to see this as the #1 priority, but I know that given the fanbase - #3 is probably more appropriate.

One option/addition that I would like, but don't know how difficult it would be to code/implement is the ability to adjust markets and salaries in order to play a minor league type league or even a college league season.

As it stands, this is near impossible since the top players in the game will ALWAYS want multi-million dollar deals, thus you can never truly create a minor league season as it stands.

ah the financial co-efficient...this was supposed to be in v5, but it turned out to be too difficult to implement....it would be a nice feature though

As far as Spring Training goes, I could just live with spring training stats. That would at least make it more like real life when it comes down to on last roster spot with two guys vying for it. One batted .361 in ST and the other .297 with a couple of errors. That would make it a little easier to choose (even if the player doesn't go on to hit a great deal in the majors) between a couple of equally rated players.

1. Ability to click a button on the player card and type in your own bio or history for a player.

2. Ability to add your own play by play text and set the rarity or frequency of the event.

3. More stats for a team's season history, including a printable display of your top hitters and pitchers for the season on the roster, your runs scored, runs allowed and all the other rankings in comparison with the league. Would include a brief, post-season game summary of the score, the winning and losing pitchers, star of the game, list of extra base hits and line summary for pitcher.

A small thing

Here's one...

When you're simming a month or whatever and it pops up that a pitcher is working on a no-hitter you should be able to take control of the team if it is yours...

Twice this year I've had Gil Meche unexpectedly take a no-no into the ninth and had to watch him (maybe) lose it because the dumbass AI won't sub in defensive replacements available on the bench.

Grrr.

(Oh, and the news section is pretty much worthless at this point. It needs a major overhaul.)

some good ideas here - but what I was really driving at is, for you the consumer is "we fixed all the little stuff" enough for you to purchase v7?

For me it would be, but I am not sure if enough others agree or if the game trully needs a "major" upgrade for you to consider purchasing?

In my opinion the news section needs to be overhauled. To a lesser extent, I would love to see the play by play improved as well...
