Team Fielding

As a newbie to this board please don't interpret this as a complaint. Maybe I should be posting this somewhere else and forgive me if this has been mentioned in the past. Would it be possible to include team fielding on the roster screen along with all the other stats that the team is rated on. This would make it easier to see just where your team ranks instead of having to go to the news section and see the league fielding. Just a suggestion. Any thoughts?

The fielding metrics that the game uses are pretty much regarded as statistically worthless, anyway. IMHO, fielding rankings on the roster screen would be useless clutter.

Yeah, even with the new engine. Team fielding is important, but things like range factor and fielding percentage can be and are extremely misleading.

Please explain? I don't know if I'm understanding you that under the new engine that fielding and range wouldn't be more important than ever?

I'm not saying they aren't important. But one thing that sabermetrics has had a very difficult time grasping is evaluating defenses. What metrics we have can give a pretty vague idea, but can also be extremely misleading, especially on an individual level. I suppose, thinking over it, that on a team level, they can be used to make a broad assumption about a defense. Nonetheless, things like middle infielders and centerfielders are what really impact a pitcher's performance, and that would not be accurately reflected in team totals, I guess.

Agreed. But having a "strong up the middle defense" is important under any baseball circumstances. That premise has been around forever, and which I agree with. All I'm asking for is that team defense be in include as measure compared to the league. I know I can look at individuals and see where I'm lacking, It would be nice to see the team as whole compared to the league. Sometimes I look at my team and see that my hitting is pretty good, pitching is pretty good, how come I'm not winning?. Have to go to another screen and find out I'm not fielding worth a damn. Just trying to save a step.

If you're trying to figure out whether you're allowing a lot of unearned runs, that is available on the roster screen. Just compare your team ERA ranking to your runs allowed ranking -- if you're ranked higher in ERA than in runs allowed (i.e 5th in ERA but 7th in runs allowed), you're allowing more than your fair share of unearned runs.
