Atlanta releases 3.5 star Chipper Jones
His numbers (.305 AVG, .414 OBP, .512 SLG) were very good and so were his ratings (78 contact, 76 power, 96 eye) but Atlanta found some reason to release him.
![]() Not good. But you know what, I just checked the splits and Chipper wasn't doing so well with Atlanta in April and May. He was batting .211 with 3 HR going into June and Atlanta just decided to let him go on June 6th and eat his $15 mil salary. This is actually pretty interesting. He completely blew up when he signed with KC the next day. He hit .400 in June and .380 in Sept/Oct with 25 RBI. He led KC to the playoffs but were whiped out in the frist round losing 3 straight. Although Chipper was struggling and his release wasn't for absolutely no reason as a thought, it's still a stretch to release him. I think even if no one else wanted him, Atlanta would be a hell of a lot more patient. Good stuff though Markus. I like that you added that into the game, but just tone it down a smidge. |

Can you believe that though? Markus has outdone himself with this.
You could just imagine. . . . Chipper Jones is angry with the Braves management for not holding on to Sheffield, Lopez and Maddux and displays his displeasure on the field until it gets so bad that they have to release him. ![]() EDIT: And just to rub it in Atlanta's face, he completely blows up with KC. Sounds kind of realistic. I figure one team would trade another $15 mil player for Chipper though. Maybe Delgado for Chipper. I think the last resort for high priced players would be to release them. I tell you what, if this situation only happened once in a blue moon, I would love it. Especially if the player starts playing well with his new team. I would have thought they would have at least tried to trade him off?

Oooh, more bad news. . .
To finally replace Chipper in LF, the Braves made a deadline deal on July 30th for Brad Wilkerson. Who did they give up? Russ Ortiz, who had an amazing June (2.10 ERA) but imploded in July (6.68 ERA), Jeff Francoeur (.209, 6, 34 in 135 games) and Nick Green (.231, 11, 41 in 129 games). I think I just realized what the problem is, though. The player evaulation weights have to be adjusted. Right now, it's set at 35% for the current year's stats which may be a little too high. All of the players traded or released were doing poorly, desipte their reputations (previous year's stats) or ratings. Last edited by sixfour210; 04-23-2004 at 02:10 PM. |

name the last 15M player to be released in reali life - it doesn't happen in the game, so it shouldn't happen in the game.

BTW, Arizona released Matt Williams who was making, i think, $9 million a couple years ago. Granted it was only for that season and with Chipper, they'd actually be coughing up $45 million (over 3 years), but $9 million is still a lot to be giving up on. |

To say it "never" happens would be wrong.

Of course, the TIgers also hang on to Bobby ".250 12 HR, where are my steroids again" Higginson because he makes 11 mil a year.
I think im going to adjust the weight too about 40/25/25/10 (Rating/2004/2003/2002) |

Another trade of note in my sim was Barry Zito, who was 5-7 pre-trade and 5-3 post-trade to KC for 2003 1st rd pick Chris Lubanski and a 1-star reliever. Between Chipper Jones and Barry Zito, KC made a push at for a strong finish but actually won the division with an 80-82 record, 2 games ahead of Chicago and Minnesota. |

The Braves would never release Chipper Jones until he gets too old, and no team would eat 45 million dollars. There is no way to defend what happened in a positive way, plain and simple.

The bad thing about this system is that prospects are traded at will since they don't have any previous season's stats. They are really expendable if they don't perform that first year. Like Lubanski that I mentioned above was traded when he batted .237 in his first year but he's still a 3-star player. |

Hmm, so you recommedation is to tone down the 35% on current year stats...?
Another option might be to turn up the importance of past years statistics so that the computer will be less rash. |
