Thumbs up Title Bout Lives!

WOW. Thats all could say when i rediscovered this game. Recently i posted on a Fight Night Forum thread "what is the best boxing game you've ever played". I thought about those days over 20 years ago, and the untold amount of time i spent with TB the board game. I of course could not resist my urge to list TB as my handsdown all-time favorite. Out of curiosty i Googled the TB game just to see if it was still in print Then when i saw the screens, how could i pass this game up.

I was no more than 16 years old at the time when i would scrounge around the house looking for pocket change. Just so i could go to the post office copier and make more TB scorepads to finish my tournys. Or the anticipation of receiving a packet from Avalon Hill with updated TB fighters. Times have certainly changed and i'm just loving the computer version. The possibilties are unreal with computer version.

I've decided to go back to 1967 and the lightweight division and startup my favorite fighter, Roberto Duran "Manos de Piedra". But i've rambled enough. If anyone has any suggestions on how you run your universes, or how to make the most out of the computer version. I would love to hear them all.

Welcome back - glad you found us! If you look through the message board there are tons of ideas on the different ways to create a boxing universe until the RPG version is released. Lot of good people on this board and we appreciate the support.

Good to have you aboard BradS! I sure recall those long waits for updated fighters from the old board game. At first, it was every year, then it seemed like it took 2 years to get another set. I can't recall the time between towards the end but this computer version is so much better in that regard. Now these guys update fighters almost on a monthly basis - ah the computer age!

Welcome Brad, I'm another old player of the board game who wasn't aware that there was a version of the game for the PC until Tom and Jim joined up with Ootpdevelopments (I was already a fan of OOTP baseball). Photocopying the scorepads sounds a bit posh to me though, I used to draw up new ones on a piece of paper with a pen and ruler. That is until we got a photocopier in the office .

I also bought the game in '79 at the age of 12. How times have changed for game playing.

Looks like '79 was a good year for Title Bout. I got my copy in the summer of '79. I was supposed to be out looking for a summer job when I stumbled across it in a game store. Let's just say I spent a whole lot more time in the ring that summer than pounding the pavement.

When I started high school in the fall of '79 I took a brand new, cutting edge class the school decided to try out called computer programming. We were learning to program in BASIC on this big ol' mainframe computer. My mid-term project? To create a computer simulation of Title Bout.

O.k., so it wasn't exactly TBCB, but I got an A anyway . . . and I could print.

1979

This is weird. I also bought the board game in 1979. Living in Australia, I remember it used to feel like an eternity for the updated fighter cards that I'd order, to arrive by sea mail.
Welcome to the board Brad.

Shane.

I got the game in 1979 as well. Well actually my Dad purchased the game and I took it over. It soon became the game I played the most of all that and APBA baseball.

I also got a copy of the game in 79, at the age of 12. Played it religiously until 2001 when TF2001 came out. Something like 2-3000 fights. My dad worked for Xerox when I was a kid so no problem with the scoresheets. At the end of my run my HW champ Marciano was 70-0-1 with one draw against Ali in 6 fights. For some reason he owned Joe Louis 9-0-0 with 6 KOs. I also own the Titlebout 1999 card set which is incredibly rare for reasons Jim doesn't even want to talk about.

I just dug out my old TB records. Unfortunately for the Rock, he didn't fair nearly as well in my Card Universe. Rocky ended up with a record of 20-5 (14). Never held the Heavyweight Championship, losing in two attempts to Sam Langford & Jack Johnson.

In my game, Langford was the most dominant Champ followed relatively closely by Ali (who was stopped by Langford in each of their 2 title fights). Langford ended up with a record of 35-5 (17). He held the title 3 times (and, I guess, is still the current title holder in the Card Universe . . . who knows, maybe someday he'll defend again), losing the title both times in huge upsets to Roland LaStarza and -- of all people -- Cruiserweight Anaclet Wamba. In Langford's defense, though, both losses were on cuts in fights he was dominating & later avenged.

Titlebout

1979 , That's what the box with Holmes and Norton (disguised) on the cover says. I was 25 when I got my copy, I then ordered cards in the next few years plus I cut out the great white hopes that came on card stock in that monthly magazine that featured Title bout in a lot of its issues which I still have. They had an article on creating fighters too. I lost the game box and board in a house fire but I had the cards in a seperate box so I still have the cards plus additional ones that I made up when I could no longer get new cards.

I am the definitive boxing newbie, as anyone here who knows me will tell you. I never played the original '79 game... hell, I wasn't even born then. But I must say that I still love TBCB, even though I typically don't stick with games for that long.

My universe is small because I trashed all the real boxers and created a bunch. I run my tournaments with BracketMaker.com, found here...

http://www.bracketmaker.com/

...So it takes care of a lot of the planning and writing for me.

I use TBCB as a screen saver of sorts. If I'm doing something else, like watching a movie or studying, then I turn on TBCB on my comp, fire up a bunch of matches, and watch the thing go.

For my universe, I've got three rules sets and three titles to go along with them, two of which are also for women. Speaking of that, one of my tournament bouts ended when the girl broke her hand, so I'm role-playing that she's out for the rest of the tourney. All her potential opponents will be passed with a bye.

What I want to do is come up with a formula that helps me determine when to retire people. Actually, I'll hijack this thread real quick and ask it... how many bouts do boxers usually go in the modern age before they retire? 40? 50? Less?

Anyway, it's great to hear from someone else who loves a game but isn't insanely fantatical about it *cough* Total Extreme Warfare fans *cough*.

I was only 2 years old in '79, so it goes without saying that I did not buy the board game then.

(My first version of Title Bout was the Windows 3.1 game)

You guys are making me feel old i was 40 years of age in 1979. So take it easy on me. I have one foot in the grave as it is and all you young whipasnappers keep trying to push the other foot in

Yes i still have my old Title Bout board game. loved it to bits,

The advantage of being a little old is i still remember the great fighters from our past. I remember when my two favourite fighters the great Sugar Ray Robinson and my fave British fighter Randy Turpin fought over here in UK and our Randy won the World Championship from Robinson. Mind you Ray won the return back in USA but Randy put up a great show over there.

To be honest a few weeks back my son was taking the piss out of me because i am now 65 and an Old Age Pensioner and had to fill in a form to get a free bus pass

Enjoy life Guys the years soon roll away Sighhhhhhhhh

Don't worry, Hawke. That just means you have a lot of wisdom.

At least, that's what you can keep telling yourself.

My association with Title Bout predates Avalon Hill. I bought it
when it was being marketed by Statis-Pro.
I'm glad to have it back, I'm having a lot of fun with it.

I just realized I put that I was 12 when I got the game in '79 I meant to put 22, not 12. Of course I could use those ten years now!
