What is pythagorean winning percentage?

Pythagorean winning percentage is an estimate of a team's winning percentage given their runs scored and runs allowed. Developed by Bill James, it can tell you when teams were a bit lucky or unlucky. It is calculated by

(Runs Scored)^1.83
---------------------------------------------------------
(Runs Scored)^1.83 + (Runs Allowed)^1.83

The traditional formula uses an exponent of two, but this has proven to be a little more accurate.

Pythagorean Record

I am not certain on how it is developed, but I know it takes into account your runs scored and runs allowed. It basically shows you how you "should" be performing. If your record is below your pythagorean record, you are somewhat unlucky.

I haven't really noticed, but isn't that just in the career stats? If so, due to the limited stats kept from season to season, there isn't enough to calculate a correct career OBP. OOTP would have to keep track of PA, HBP, SF, SB, etc.

Dont invest too much into what it says. If your team wins a lot (100 games or so) you may end up missing 50 innings (due too winning at home) or so, which will cost you maybe 10 runs , enough to throw that off.

Also managing blowouts plays a part in this, if you let your scrubs come in and pitch through trouble (even if they give up a few runs) this effects you...

However, if you go +6 or -6 then obviously luck plays a roll (and managing), but I put hardly any stock into it (untill he gets extreme)
